The link took me to a site with a pop up video ad for Win 7 but it never let me go past it.

@atravis6: click on the BUY box that says $29.99. It's the left middle box. Then click on the price $29.99. That will take you to the enter email & on the way you go.

How do you get the professional version?

vote-for1vote-against

@mariod: Thanks. Unfortunately I went to a community college that didn't give e-mail accounts. So no luck for me.

vote-for1vote-against

Bought a second license for my girlfriend as well. Too good to pass up!

vote-for1vote-against

Can we resell these, or is there some sort of linkage to you?

vote-for1vote-against

This says Home Premium when following the link. Where's Professional?

vote-for2vote-against

@zerrick: When you go to purchase there is a small section that says "Need to connect to your school’s network domain? You can get Win 7 Pro for $29.99 Click here"

vote-for1vote-against

looks like this is an upgrade version, and it's home edition.

vote-for1vote-against

Note this is only for college students, not high school or lower.

vote-for1vote-against

Running Professional right now off my student discount, and its pretty awesome. Very easy to install, and if you ran vista you don't even need to backup your files. Great call by Microsoft

This may not be true anymore as I ordered my copy (professional) right as the program began last fall, but I received the FULL version of W7 (along with the optional full version dvd), not the upgrade. Definitely a pleasant surprise.

Follow these steps to get the professional version:
1. Click the buy link on www.win741.com and enter your email info
2. Click on the link given to you in your email
3. Once logged in to the store, below the "buy now" button for the home edition there's a line:
"Need to connect to your school’s network domain? You can get Win 7 Pro for $29.99"
Click on that link and you'll get an option for 32 or 64-bit W7 Pro.

The software is the same, but the product key is supposed to be for an upgrade (I've been putting this off forever, good thing I saw this deal).

If you're already running the RC or Beta, follow this link to upgrade to retail.
http://gizmodo.com/5389945/how-to-upgrade-to-windows-7-retail-from-the-beta-or-release-candidate
It might be dated info, but should still work. I'll comment back tomorrow if it doesn't. I reallly don't want to reinstall Vista just to get it back to Win7.

vote-for1vote-against

Also, another note. I just went through and purchased it twice from the same link and it worked. The product keys are for a single license, so for those of you with multiple computers, just go buy it again!

vote-for1vote-against

@switz213: I dont see any way its linked to you. You should be able to resell them.

vote-for1vote-against

@irockash: Hence the domain name: win741.com. Windows 7 for one. What a terribly cheesy thing...

any one tried installing it multiple times and just not activating one, or if its on the same ip how that works?

vote-for1vote-against

@davidalism: Im not sure, but it seems like it can be installed as a full license. It does say

"Note: If you're not upgrading from Windows Vista Home Premium, you may need to perform a custom installation. Please visit this link to learn more-click here."

This article has some good information: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp

"In all of these methods, you should observe one simple rule. Do not enter your product key during Setup. Instead, you will attempt to activate Windows 7 manually after it is installed. So you can just enter your product key later."

and

"If you have a previous version of Windows (XP or Vista), try launching Windows 7 Setup from that OS first, even if you want to wipe out the previous Windows verison. If you run Windows 7 Setup from your previous OS, Windows 7 will always activate."

Did anyone successfully purchase and recieve/download this on January 4th?

vote-for1vote-against

Thanks for the reminder, I didn't realize this deal ended tomorrow.

vote-for1vote-against

I successfully purchased this today, Monday the 4th of January 2010. I am downloading now, looks like its good till the 5th.

On another note, there is a place you can email information so that if you don't have a college email address you can still get this deal, they just want to verify that you really are a student

Also wanted to mention you can get Win 7 ultimate for 59.99 which is also a great deal!

vote-for2vote-against

go to www.theultimatesteal.com there, you can get windows 7 pro, home and even microsoft office 2007. this is the same website, just a different approach instead of going through all that clicking

vote-for2vote-against

I'd appreciate it if someone could explain to me how Pro distinguishes itself from Home? There aren't any drawbacks to buying the Pro edition over the home edition, are there?

vote-for1vote-against

I've read others comments about buying multiple licenses; however, I had my boyfriend try to get me one as well (since I go to a private institution w/o fancy emails), & it wouldn't let him do it. He'd submit the order (after payment information) & get this message:

"You are not eligible to purchase one or more line items in your order. These products will need to be removed from your shopping cart [Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Upgrade - 64 bit]."

vote-for1vote-against

@erthian: It goes by different product keys, the IP address shouldn't matter... I received two different keys. If you don't activate at the time of installation, Windows will run for 30 days before it forces you to activate.

@ainokokuei: I'm not sure how it worked for me, I just submitted one order, clicked on the link again from the email, and submitted another one. Not sure if it matters, but the first time was Professional 64-bit, and the second time the 32-bit version. Maybe try doing Home Premium the second time around?

vote-for1vote-against

@strambert: Tried to edit my post, but it was too late >.<. Here's a comparison for different Windows 7 versions: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

For most people, Home Premium should be fine, you only need Professional if you are going to be joining your school or work's domain. The XP mode is kinda cool, for applications that won't run on 7 or Vista, I don't think you see many of these anymore in the consumer (not business) world. I went with Professional anyway... It's the same price, and you're not really "loosing" anything. Plus, it sounds cooler.

vote-for1vote-against

I previously purchased and downloaded the home premium version. Just now I got the professional version. This time you had a choice between downloading an an ISO file or an exe file. I don't remember this being a option before. Very nice for those of us upgrading from XP or who just want to make a bootable disk

vote-for1vote-against

When you download, you can get an ISO. I was able to do a clean install with it.

vote-for1vote-against

I bought it yesterday and opted to have the dvd mailed to me. After purchasing, I also noticed that there was an ISO download option. If you have a DVD burner, don't spend the extra $15 for a disc.

vote-for1vote-against

I thought the deal was over with? I was still able to purchase one copy from the ultimate steal website for prof 32-bit ed. and then the same copy from the windows 7 site.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm a Mac user but bought Windows 7 pro (.iso file) to use with Boot Camp when Apple supports it. But when I click on the download file, only a 356K file is downloaded. How does one get the actual 2+ GB installation file??? I contacted the company but have yet to receive a reply. (I also ordered the backup disc but would like to download the file I paid for!)

vote-for1vote-against

The small file that you get from the website is a download agent for the larger (2.9gb I think) file

vote-for1vote-against

It doesn't appear this actually ends. They have a link for win7 pro for $29.99 under the "Other Student Deals" area. They are advertising office ultimate 07 now.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm a life long learner and a student of many. Do I qualify?

vote-for1vote-against

This is possibly a scam!! Check your account they have charged me 4 times the price already, although we can't be sure until they hard post to the account. My girlfriend also did this and had multiple charges.

vote-for1vote-against

As a side note, you can get Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise for $9.95 from the Microsoft Home Use Program.

If your company participates in the Microsoft Home Use Program you can get Office 2007 Enterprise for $9.95 as a download. Back up media is an additional $12.00. You need a valid e-mail address at the participating company and a code from your company.
