How is this a bad deal? This specific model sells for about $400-600 pn ebay because of its specific nature and rarity

@charlesp2009 - if your fan is going so strong all the time you may need some maintenance on it. I've worked on dozens of these at work, and the release models especially can lose their thermal profiling if left too long. You'd need to either hire a tech or open it up yourself, clean out the dust, remove and reapply thermal paste to the heatsinks. Do it sooner than later to avoid a YLOD.

@bbruin66 - some of us enjoy the nostalgia we get from playing older games, and using a higher performance system to play them usually gets better quality out of an old game than using the original box. Having both the PS2 and HD options in one box is a luxury worth an extra $20 I would think. According to ebay and other statistics, it seems that having that luxury is worth several hundred dollars to many people.

This is great. I just picked up a second one for my bedroom. I've been using an old 60gb for quite a few years now that I picked up as a refurb from Tiger Direct and I have no complaints at all. I swapped the hard drive for a 320gb for extra storage. It's taken the place of my BluRay and make a great media center for streaming Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.

@charlesp2009:

Replacing the thermal compound on a PS3 is a lot more time consuming than a PC. Everything's pretty compact in these PS3s, and to get to the cpu and gpu requires you to take out 20 or so screws and literally every single part in it. It took me around 45mins, granted I had NO idea how to take apart a PS3 and had to follow this video series step by step.

I only wish I had the money. I love my slim, but the idea of being able to combine my PS2 and PS3 is too much.

I'm glad I bought a 60GB launch console but that fan is freakin' loud. Nice to have it for the handful of PS2 games I play and the memory card slots are quite convenient. Still, I'm really close to buying a slim just for living room use. My guests complain about the fan noise!

@pyr0ball: Good advice. I clean out the dust regularly but never considered the thermal paste. I trust it's straightforward and easy like a PC?

The fan doesn't run full blast all the time but it's definitely louder than the newer consoles, even at idle.

If it were 3.55 Firmware or below, I would buy one!

@Viroodiem - Pre-Owned is not the same as refurbished by any means. I know, because I run a computer and electronics repair business and fixing these badboys was my bread and butter for a while. The ones at GameStop may have been cleaned out, but they have never had the solder joints reflowed or faulty components replaced. Refurbished (especially from a reseller site like Geeks.com) usually means refurb from the manufacturer, i.e. Sony. That means you're getting a PS3 that wont die in 1-2 years from an already-abused system.

Bottom line: Gamestop Pre-Owned systems are a gamble at best. You never know who had their hands on it before you

@charlesp2009: He's referring to free, unlimited PS3 and under vidyagames for life.

Uhhm.

This is NOT that great of a deal. Ebay might have some sellers selling them at 400$ for buy it now price, but on auction they typically go for right about the same, 200 or so.

Thing is I am astounded there are people on Woot, who are so bad at bargain hunting, they would point to ebay, and be completely oblivious that gamestops every day low price on these (yes never a shortage for the level of demand) for 10$ more. at 229.00

@powerslave: Why not run Linux on a legitimate PC?

So a new PS3 was $199 at gamestop a few weeks ago and this is a deal? Put down the PS2 games and join the world of HD. (Watches my post hit negative numbers)
