dealsinstant fisherman portable fishing kit - 2 pack…

I was very close to picking this up then I saw the reviews and while the deal here is better than anywhere else, I still can't bring myself to buy this.

Just what I need in my pants, another rod...

vote-for1vote-against

I don't think these rods and reels will hold up to saltwater fishing with the zinc-nickel plated steel gears. Can you say, "RUST"? ...just saying ;)

vote-for9vote-against

These types of compact kits tend to fall into one of two camps:
1) bad reel + acceptable rod
2) bad rod + acceptable reel

I have several examples of both, but I will take the better reel any day. The rod just distributes tension. No matter how inconvenient it is, it will still do it's job. The reel, on the other hand...

vote-for28vote-against

Be aware, these types of rods/reels are glorified toys, and they are more useful for luring unsuspecting consumers than actually being useful for fishing. Don't start carping about how cheap they are if you get hooked into buying one.

vote-for19vote-against

Just what I needed in my pants, another rod with mixed reviews and doesn't perform as promised...

Who even knew they did reviews on fishing poles... Thanks guys, I would have bought these... Girlgonefishing!

@neilormos: I have one of the original "pocket-fisherman" still in its swell plastic pouch. I'm waiting for Ron Popeil to pass, then maybe it'll be worth something cause you can't really fish with it.

vote-for3vote-against

@neilormos: Good to see I'm not the only one who immediately thought of the Ronco version when seeing this...

If you find yourself buying an instant-fishing kit... you probably aren't a fisherman. Fishing, if it is to be enjoyed, takes time, and comes with a quietness of soul. Fishing with this will be an exercise in splashing, untying knots, and being laughed at by fish.

Is there any such thing as an non-portable fishing pole?

Amazon owns Woot. Whatever doesn't sell well in Amazon will be put on Woot.
(Mostly JUNKS)

vote-for4vote-against

Sure, these are not the best rods and reels you can buy and you are not going to use them to catch stripers or blues in the ocean. BUT, if you want to introduce a couple of kids to fishing by going after sunnies at your local lake, these will be fine. If they don't take to it, your only out twenty bucks. If they do, you can get better equipment as they get older.

BTW, I had a pocket fisherman back in the 70's. I used it for years and it instilled in me a lifetime love and appreciation for angling.

@ncgiang: Then go back to Amazon and leave us alone

vote-for4vote-against

Don't even bother with these. My cousin used it for the first time and on his third cast it broke apart, went flying, and left him holding the handle while the rest sunk away.

If you want to introduce kids to fishing, just pickup the cheap poles at Walmart for the same price (if not cheaper).

I've been looking for something like this to put in my pack for primitive camping. That way, I can try my hand on a lake or river bank and if I catch something, fish dinner. If not, freeze dried camp meals for dinner. Any thoughts on the likelihood of catching anything with these?

When did less than 5 foot become almost 6?

vote-for3vote-against

Heck, guess I should have read the reviews before buying. Oh well, got me two Christmas Gifts to give away now I guess.

vote-for3vote-against

I don't need to spend money on gear to sit by the water and drink beer.

"I've been looking for something like this to put in my pack for primitive camping."

For a real quality lightweight fishing tool, do a search for streamlines (or tidelands). Plenty of board talk by users. Sold by Moontrail; made by me. Good writeup found searching "whitemouse/ streamlines".

Might as well blend up 15 dollars and feed it to the fishes. First cast I hear a "kaplonk" I realized a metal pin flew in the water and it was the most expensive cast I've ever made.... I'd suggest buying some string, a weight, and a hook. Then wait for it.... use a tree branch and a worm...I'd give this a five stars over the product listed. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Really works as a beginner setup.

@stan_bilik: Specs must have been written by a fisherman.

@radical12: These are perfect my 5 yr old and 7 yr old. If they really like it then I'll invest in something nicer.

vote-for5vote-against

Guys listen they are a toy. That being said my grandkids will love the uniqueness of them. I bought two sets of them to keep around in case they show up with friends. I fish almost daily I live on a Lake own hundreds of dollars in rods and reels. If you break these on the first cast, you really need a new hobby.

One seems to work, the other is useless, and I am an experienced fish guy. Thought the fishing poles would be great for camping trips with the family by not taking up much room as my real fishing poles. It is a shame that the reels are such poor quality, it seems like the pole is a nice idea. Bet they are made in China like all the other low quality junk.

Just received mine yesterday. Only one is working, the second one is not. Feels so cheap. It was a too good deal to be true!!! You get what you pay for...!!!
Is there any way of exchanging the non-working one?

vote-for2vote-against

@mazyland: Not sure if we have any more in stock to exchange, but send an email to service@woot.com and they can help you with the defective one.

vote-for1vote-against

Worst woot ever. I got these to give as gifts. I gave one last month, but had time to change the line on the second one before christmas. It didn't work, out of the box the reel wouldn't pick up. UGH. I am embarrassed that I gave one girl the first one without looking at it. I saw the commercials for the "instant fisherman 2" and it looked like a decent reel. This is a piece of sh*t that you could not pay me to take.
