Stake me now. I already purchased all the seasons individually but I do wish that they would release the later seasons in widescreen the way they were meant to be seen.

I'm watching this right now.

Is this a re-release of the box set? I remember buying this at least 4 or 5 years ago for less than this.

@mybestuser1: While later seasons were shot in widescreen, they were NEVER intended to be shown that way; the studio wanted to be able to show it widescreen if they wanted, similar to how movie studios used to make directors shoot widescreen movies open-matte so that they could modify it to 4:3 for home video.

Please read this message from Joss Whedon:

"Gentle Viewer:

No doubt you are looking over this scrumptious BUFFY package and exclaiming "No @#$%ing letterboxing? Whutzat? GYPPED!" Possibly you are breaking things. Please calm down. The fabulous episodes of BUFFY (and that one crappy one, sorry about that, seemed really cool when we wrote it...) were not shot in a widescreen format. They were shot in the TV 4 by 3 ratio. Now I'm a letterbox fanatic, but not just because I crave th' wide. I want to see the whole screen, as framed by the director."

"The BUFFY's I (and others) shot were framed for traditional TVs. Adding space to the sides simply for the sake of trying to look more cinematic would betray the very exact mise-en-scene I was trying to create. I am a purist, and this is the purest way to watch BUFFY. I have resisted the effort to letterbox BUFFY from the start and always will, because that is not the show we shot. This is. So enjoy! Stop breaking things. You're getting the best presentation of -- let's face it -- the best Television Drama since MATCHGAME '79. Bye for now!"

If you really want to see the later seasons in widescreen, they're available on Netflix instant.

This is a great deal. I would be in for this if I didn't already own the Chosen collection.

I remember watching on broadcast tv in letterbox format and I even recorded some Buffy shows on VHS in letterbox format. Maybe my local station did something unusual but I have never seen Buffy on DVD in widescreen/letterbox other than the Musical episode

@mybestuser1: Buffy never broadcast in the US in letterboxed format, excepting for the musical episode. It did broadcast in widescreen in other countries, such as the UK, where they also have WS DVDs of the later seasons.

Angel, on the other hand, switched to broadcasting in letterbox/widescreen in the US starting with season 3. You may be thinking of that show. The DVDs for Angel are widescreen from season 2 onwards in the US.

The Angel DVD set is also currently on sale for $55.99

just had to buy another since my granddaughter is now helping me wear mine copy out. I will give her the old set when it arrives. I love her so much but she will not get my new copy of Buffy.
