Zappos has great customer service (the best), but I've found that their prices aren't very competitive. Free overnight shipping is great, but the difference in cost may be outweighed by buying elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing actually needed to buy some shoes, some prices are off while others are fair, specially because of not paying sales taxes. Found a pair I like cheaper than other places. So I'll go ahead and give it a try.

I think the VIP is not generally available - you have to qualify or be offered it. I was offered one by customer service when i called with a problem. My husband recently got an invitation saying it was because he had been a member for three years.

While Zappos may not be cheaper if you know exactly what you want. Where it really shines is when you buy several pairs with the idea of trying them all on and returning some. I have a hard time buying shoes on line unless I have worn the same style previously. With Zappos I might order four pair and return two or three. With free return shipping, this is a good deal since the ones I keep are reasonably priced, even if not hte cheapest and they are still less expensive and more choices than buying locally.

I've never bought from Zappos before, and the link worked for me. I was able to register and get VIP. But then again I saw this pretty early, it was only after I was able to register that I came back on here and commented.

Says I'm on a VIP waiting list. Being on a waiting list isn't really a deal.

I love Zappos. I've been a VIP with them for a year or so now, and I've bought plenty and returned plenty as well. Their customer service is excellent. Sometimes their prices are higher than other places, but I just shop around, usually the free overnight shipping is enough to tip the tables in their favor, unless it's just substantially cheaper. I might pay a few extra dollars for an item, but I get it the next day. They're are good with returns - however they do not do exchanges, you have to buy another one before or after you return, they will credit your account upon receiving, you can get either a zappos credit or a reimbursement on your credit card. With all the crappy customer services out there, I'll spend a little extra to be able to have good service.

For what it's worth I think Zappos price not always being competitive may have something to do with how well they treat their employees. There are perks like the use of the companies private jet:

I've always found zappos to be incredibly expensive and have never not been able to find the exact shoes I'm looking for at a much cheaper price. Nonetheless, I guess it works for folks who would rather just find 'em and buy 'em. Shoes are frickin' expensive these days, though, and paying retail can really hurt.

Zappo's seems to have the 'hard to find' sizes' and that's part of their appeal. I know a woman who has large & very wide feet, it's difficult for her to find shoes anywhere. Aside from being challenging to find, the selection in B&M stores is apparently lacking in style. Zappos is a treasure trove to her. The free shipping & excellent customer service is a wonderful bonus. Another great thing - you're invited to a wedding or party & find that you have no shoes to match your outfit... Go to Zappos & get them overnight!

I had a bad experience with both the order and the customer service, or lack thereof. I won't shop with them again but they certainly do seem to have a lot of fans.
