@chefraz: sand is definitely going to get in them, but a lot of it works its way out, but might still give ya a blister. Makes for a pretty good water shoe though. Hope that helps~

Are these a fad or do they really work and are comfortable for running?

I thought they were a fad awhile ago but definitely not! I bought a pair and you notice a difference from the lack of bulk and weight on your feet from a pair of shoes. Plus they are great for all-terrain running because you can throw them in the washer...I love mine!

@gobears99: They are not a fad, they promote the natural barefoot running technique as opposed to the normal heelstrike that most running shoes allow because of excess heel padding, and a lack of pain from the heel strike.
