CRKT Van Hoy On Fire Knife for $24.99 + $5.00 shipping
That’s the beauty of it. They CHOOSE their impending doom.
I've bought from that website before, they have awesome service! ;)
Half the price that I'm seeing on Amazon. I'd be in for three if I had the cash.
I'm not familiar with this particular model, but I'm a fan of CRKT knives. I've had a KISS as my river knife for I don't know how many years, but it wouldn't surprise me if its been over ten. The hinge is still tight and the blade still holds an edge.
Don't they know only Gerber knives can kill Zombies ?
In for one!
Love my 2 CRKT's, in for two, will gift one to someone deserving.
@rustybender:
Big fan of CRKT too. Their assisted opening system is superb.
CRKT makes some great knives and this set is no exception. I paid about $40 for mine and alternate between carrying this everyday or my Gerber multitool. The handle design is a bit different from traditional handles, but still feels rather comfortable in my (large) hand. Some states don't allow assisted opening knives, but it is rather nifty and hasn't come open in my pocket after several months of carrying. AUS 8 is often used as a surgical steel and this knife can be sharpened to a fine edge, it's pretty sharp out of the box too. If you want a small, high quality knife that you can carry around with you all day, I highly recommend this over a cheap $5-8 one you'll find most else. You definitely get what you pay for. On a side note, I find serrations to be a little bit annoying and not as useful as a full edged blade.
CRKT sells some of the best made, sturdiest knives around. Oh yeah and they're sharp too! While I'm not particular with this model, based on all the CRKT knives I own now, I had to buy two. Get them while they last, I know more then one wooter who can never let a CRKT deal pass.
i really like CRKT knives: i have a lot of them. my EDC is a CRKT M16-LE, and i like it so much i've got a spare, just in case. i've given many CRKT's as gifts.
i was about to jump on this deal when i noticed one deal-breaking detail: there's ONLY ONE WAY to position the clip!! i carry point up, blade back, so my thumb falls right onto the opening mechanism. most knives allow at least 2 places to attach the clip - the M16-LE has four.
that said, i've never had a bad CRKT knife. AUS-8 is a good quality steel; and at $24.99, this is one, too.
Make sure you click through to the Sellout.Woot page. There's a video showing it in action.
Just a heads up - AUS8 steel will take a razor edge but does not keep it for very long. It's great steel that can get ridiculously sharp, but plan on sharpening this blade often to keep it that way.
30 Second review, GO!
Pros:
- Small & light: 2.4 inch blade - good for annoying knife laws
- AUS8 Steel: Good edge retention, good rust resistance. Definitely a good steel for everyday carry/use. (Not as good as "super steels", but a helluvalot cheaper)
- Outburst: One of the simplest assisted opening mechanisms I've seen, and "simple" means "less things to break".
- CRKT Warranty: Lifetime repair/replacement, assuming no knife abuse. The standard for most knife companies.
Cons:
- The pocket clip rides very high
- Frame-lock may flex when gripping the handle very hard
- The pocket clip stops the lock bar from over-extending when unlocking the blade; if you choose to remove the clip, this function will be gone.
Overall:
Decent light/medium-use folder. Don't expect to win a knife fight or survive on an island with it.
Very nice price for the quality.
*When in doubt, buy the plain edge instead of serrated edge
Thanks for the info guys! I think i might pick one up with my @jumbowoot $
Wasn't paying much attention when I saw the thumbnail and thought "What kind of utterly freaky double-hinged knife monstrosity are they selling?" I was almost disappointed to find it was actually just two knives.
Appears to be "Made in Taiwan" unfortunately.
@meefus: >On a side note, I find serrations to be a little bit annoying and not as useful as a full edged blade.
Outside of a few specific situations I'm pretty sure serrations are really only good for people who don't care to keep their knives sharp.
@curvin777: It is sad to see knives made overseas, however you should still expect a quality product from good knife companies. CRKT, SOG, Gerber, and Kershaw make good knives here or overseas. The big thing to note when buying a knife made overseas is what alloy is used for the blade. AUS-8 is good steel and won't take a lot of work to maintain though you will want a stone to maintain it if you use it frequently.
You won't find a blade of this quality for the price anywhere else. It is much more practical than the ornate designs of sites like Budd-K, and it comes with a lifetime warranty!
I am in for one razor edge...a man's blade should take after his mind.
@hormelgroundmeat: So your saying I wont win a knife fight or survive on an island with it?
I'M OUT!! I mean what else does a person use a knife for?
I'm going to say a few things that some of you may not like. But they are things I have come to prefer after years of collecting, using, and loving cutlery.
CRKT is a great company that produces quality knives. But I can say as much for many manufactures (Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, Cold Steel, SOG, etc.) CRKT, like Kershaw and SOG, is also quite affordable often times. However, they don't often make knives that I like. Though this particular model is closer to the mark than most of the company's offerings. There are a few quirks prevalent in their catalog that irk me.
They put an emphasis on unique and visually striking designs which I feel often detracts from functionality. As a collector I can appreciate this, but as a user I'm left wanting. This model suffers less from it than others. And despite some vigorous shaping of the non-locking side handle scale it looks passably comfortable for light use. Which for an EDC is adequate.
----Continued----
The stupid double locking mechanism they claim makes it stronger. Which I'm sure may help, but as an EDC wholly unnecessary and more annoying than anything. If you want strength, a Cold Steel Tri-ad lock has it in spades, and they do it without superfluous gadgetry that my stupid sweaty fingers have to fumble about with. A big miss for this model.
A love affair with tip down carry. Another big miss in my book. Some people like it but I've never been able to figure out why. Tip up puts the blade in the perfect position to deploy the pointy-sharpy bit after extracting the knife from your pocket. Some manufactures (notably Benchmade) claim that tip down is safer. I don't know what planet they are living on but it is not one that exists in reality. If you're right handed, like most people, this method puts the blade in perfect position to open in your pocket.
----Continued----
Which turns the knife into a wonderful gut hook for your hand the next time you want to pull your keys from your pocket. I have a lovely scar to prove this.
Spyderco is a manufacture who understands that clip position should be a user's choice and provides the latitude to do so in many of their models. Lefty, righty, tip up, tip down; it's all cool to them. This is not exclusive to them mind you but they tend to have more models that allow this. Deep carry! Someone mentioned earlier they do not like this, but for an EDC I couldn't disagree more. I like deep carry pocket clips. They show less of the knife to people who may have their delicate sensibilities assaulted buy the mere sight of your offensive and extremely dangerous sub- 3 inch pocket knife. And it leaves less of the knife out to snag on objects and clothing. I've lost a few knives to this.
----Continued----
Again, these rules apply to an EDC knife, not a tactical/defensive knife that you want to deploy quickly in a stressful situation.
That being said; this knife has a lot going for it. Good materials. The blade steel is a Hall-of-Fame AUS8, which strikes a good balance between performance (edge retention, ease of sharpening, and rust resistance) and affordability. No, it is not some wonder steel (taken with a grain of salt anyway) like ZDP-189. But it's also not stupid expensive like the "cool guy" steels. Speaking of which, the price is another thing this little guy has going for it. At basically $30 you are getting a pretty good knife that only someone overly picky (like me) would have a problem with. This wouldn't be my first choice for a knife around $30, but that is not to say it is a bad one.
Knock yourself out, buy two!
Looking at the pictures, I am assuming the thumb knobs can not be flipped to other side. This makes it unfriendly to lefties.
It retailed for $89.00 so $32.57 total for a quality knife from a quality company made me jump on this deal
What the heck did you do to that poor monkey?
@stele2: Thank you. No one thinks of the monkey sacrifice.
I love the crkt knife I got off of woot previously and the price is half of what I'm seeing on Amazon so I'm in for 1. So far I love crkt, sog, and camillus (sadly they went out of business) they are all nice knives from what I have so far but even with people saying they love Gerber here I refuse to buy another Gerber after the last 1 I got which was money well wasted.
CRKT makes a good blade. Their clips however are another story. I recently bought a CRKT knife for my EDC, the clip lasted about 1-2 months before I bumped into something while it was in my pocket and those screws that hold it in ripped right out stripping the holes on the way out.
Just my thoughts on using one of these as an EDC.
@rustybender: I Carry my HUG every day.
Most of my carry knives are CRKT. Always good quality, great customer service (I washed a van hoy snap lock and lost all the pieces and they sent a free parts kit) Many innovative and interesting designs.
The slots in the grip are just places for my coins and keys to get stuck and trapped by the blade. The holes in the blade make it hard to make my lunch without having a big clean up afterwards trying to get food out of the holes. 2.375 inches may be required to be legal in California but i don't live there anymore. Another half inch is enough. Serrations make it harder to spread the ketchup, but they help me cut rope.
@jeffguay: take a look at the photos again. There is a thumb knob on both sides. One photo has it pictured in the clip side and another has it pictured on the non-clip side.
Im in. Not the best but darned good for $30 (actually $25 since I had a $5 Coupon..THANKS WOOT!)
Prop would have bought 3 but honestly....already have 2 of these both plain and serrated...Love them for the money. Bought this for a gift for somebody who loved my van hoy's but didnt want to pay $50-$90, which seems to be the current pricing although that depends on what site your loking at....some are selling a cheap knock off of this which is junk and not a true crkt van hoy...I see them everywhere so make sure your getting a 'real' one...Nice deal for $25...Great knife for the price...frankly, they would be great for alot more $$'s but $25 is a no brainer...
In for one (plain blade); however, I'm curious as to why I can find no mention whatsoever of this model on CKRT's website. It's probably a discontinued model - but other discontinued models ARE on the webste (indicated as "discontinued"). Also... NO reviews on Amazon... and only one on YouTube (from a guy who got it for $10 at a pawn shop!).
@curvin777: Thanks for that. Looks like I'll be spending my $25 on whiskey instead.
@theraven65: Look closer. Plenty of reviews. Havent read a bad review yet. + Prices are $59-$89, so $25 is a great buy. And remember-LIFETIME WARRANTY...You can ship them back a knife broken in 20 pieces and CRKT will send you a new one.Just like Kershaws and others who stand behind their products. Hard to knock a 'lifetime warranty'..The makers must think quality is pretty good to offer lifetime warranties on under $100 blades, let alone a $25 one..I actually broke a CRKT that I dropped while climbing. Friends grabbed all the pieces they could...paid very little to ship back to crkt and about 8 biz days later a brand new one was in my mailbox.....Kershaw and a few others are also very good with their warranties...If the warranty is 'solid', then you know the knife will be.These companies would be out of biz if they sold junk with lifetime warranties.Buy with confidence & if ya dont like it, double (or more) your money and sell it on fleebay..DONT Sell it for $5 at a Pawn shop!
Just got my daily sellout.woot.com email 15 min ago and it shows the RC bass fisher boat... Which I want. But when I click on today's woot link, it is this knife. And when I look at the blog, the remote control boat was actually on sale on Saturday a few days ago... What's the deal? How do I get the boat? Not sure whether to post this under today's Woot/Blog post or Saturdays Blog post. so I'm posting it twice. Damn monkeys screwed up the emails!
@zebulonsmith: LOL. I'd take one of these for $25 over a bottle of Whiskey anyday.
This is a great knife for $25.
Does your bottle of whiskey come with a lifetime guarantee? LOL....
So, your passing cause its not made in USA?
LOL..Um, USA blades are GREAT! But so are foreign made blades assuming they are coming from a legit maker...LOTS of junk coming from overseas so better to do homework and avoid the JUNK..But passing on a non USA blade coming from a legit maker known to make great qualty foreign knives WITH LIFETIME WARRANTIES is gonna cause you to miss out on some great knives at great prices.
Enjoy your whiskey...If you were smart...You'd buy 3 of these and keep one, sell 2 on fleebay & then go buy a few bottles of whiskey with $$'s left over. You get the knife, multiple bottles of whiskey and some left over $$'s..
But to each his own I always say....

Same with me. Exact same. Didnt want the boat but glad I clicked it and found this knife instead.....Was wondering what was up..guess its not just me and a glitch in the system....
@kyesdad: you need to look again. Not one picture shows a way of a the thumb knob set for a lefty.

Here is an example of a JUNK NON USA KNIFE. You can buy these and thousands just like it for UNDER $5 all over fleebay and other sites. Go to fleebay and look. You'll find 10's of thousands of cheap JUNK being sold for $5 and most arent even happy after paying $5...they feel like they flushed $5 when they could have enjoyed a whopper and fries more then these JUNK KNIVES...
@axiscized: My bad, I thought the "safety" switch was the thumb button.
5 dollar knives on fleebay are knockoffs duh!! Some people are just ignorant when they don't see made in USA
I don't know if that was to trying show to CRKT in a better light, or if you were saying a CRKT is junk. If you are calling the CRKT junk, you have no expirence with the brand, or their customer service. It seems most people are siding with me on CRKT's quality.
Edited * saw your post earlier, you were showing a junk one for example. My apologies*
@itsme1964: It's been my experience that when something like this goes overseas, it's to cut costs. Do you really thing that they aren't going to cut on materials, too? Another $10 will get you a knife that actually lasts a lifetime. The only reason that they hand out the guarantees is that 90% of the people that buy the product don't bother to cash in on them. If you want to buy one of these things, go ahead but I've been burnt now on the Chinese Kershaws that were on Woot a few months ago (because they weren't up to Kershaw's usual quality) and a Ka-Bar that I bought on Amazon. The Ka-Bar had the edge ground so crooked on the bottom half of the blade that you can tell it's bad at a glance holding it at arm's length. I'd rather spend another $10 or $20 for something of reliable quality than potentially throw $25 away on something that isn't. These might be great knives, but I haven't bought one yet after a move overseas that was.
Hmm...serrated or plain? and yes just one
@bunkerking2k5: Yea, I was showing an example of JUNK KNIVES. They are all over fleebay and many other sites. Non USA CRKT, should not be included in JUNK KNIVES. NON USA CRKT's are very good quality. At least every one i've gotten. Ditto on NON USA KERSHAWS and some other KNOWN HIGH QUALITY NAMES.
@zebulonsmith: Of course its cheaper overseas. But that doesnt mean the quality is bad. YES, there is plenty of JUNK being made overseas but IN MY EXPERIENCE CRKT & KERSHAW NON USA models are AWESOME for the money. I have plenty of both.USA & overseas versions & although the USA models are better, the overseas models may be better for the $$'s as the quality is not that far off the USA versions & for alot less $.
Unlike you, I have yet to get a Kershaw or CRKT NON USA blade I did not love and I have an extensive collection that is seen by many and 95% of the people are amazed at the quality of the non usa versions and almost every person said they'd prefer the non usa version because it is alot less $'s and very good quality.
Heck, you can call Kershaw direct and ya know what? They make a higher profit margin on USA models then the overseas models 'they cut costs on', since the usa versions sell for alot more yet kershaw will actually rec a china model over usa for quality/price.
Note CRKT used AUS-8 stainless steel for the blade in these knives. If you want more info on the different types of stainless used in knives, here is a link: http://www.knifeart.com/steelfaqbyjo.html
