is this broken for anyone else?

I just learned the coupon is only valid for Amazon student members. My apologies.

vote-for10vote-against

To use the code, one must be a student member. I was so informed when I tried the code. I verified same.

vote-for10vote-against

Fortunately, I'm a student member... Score!

Great Deal and got the discount being a student. Can't beat Amazon Prime!

Even without the 5 dollars off, this is a decent deal. As far as the device itself, I have one and love it. Works great with my phone, and is likely the cheapest way to stream on your tv without built in Wi-Fi. Just be advised that most tv's you use this with don't have powered hdmi ports so you will have to use the supplemental power cable.

Coupon code works but only for verified student amazon prime accounts. Picked one up at Best Buy yesterday for $29 and love it. Only problem is that chromecast doesn't work with all routers as I found out yesterday as well.

@7acil: can you flash the firm wear on your router or maybe just see if there is an update. One of the biggest security threats to people is having a router hacked due to un-updated software/ firmware

vote-for6vote-against

I've been wanting to get a Chromecast device since they came out and was kicking myself repeatedly for not getting one from the initial shipment (when I had the chance) especially because of the Netflix deal at that time. Picking this up for now with almost $10 off is a soothing consolation at long last! I do have a student account which must be why the additional $5 off coupon worked for me.

@philosopherott: and one of the biggest threats to the actual functioning of your router is doing a firmware update on it. ;) (in my experience, anyway)

vote-for3vote-against

In for 2. Thanks!
Add: Only one coupon per order, though. Still worth it.

I hopped on this deal last week to get $5.01 off $35 and now I'm kicking myself... I think you can only use one discount per account because it's not letting me buy another (gift)...

@philosopherott: I know it's several hours late but my Asus N66U is updated with latest firmware and the google.com lists the firmware version of each router and mine is yet to be updated with the latest.

What is interesting tho is that I have a secondary access point going through my N66U and that seems to work very well. 2nd access point is a TP-Link router btw.

I really wanted to buy one, but I hear bad things about it's ability to play local media. I'm bored with Netflix and such. Google actively banned an app that made it possible. So I ended up paying 3x as much last week for an Ouya.

I ordered mine from whoever Google says to order from and have been disappointed to say the least. It is hard to plug into a TV and because of the HDMI plug orientation, the light is on the backside so it can't be seen except from the rear and because it generally plugs in behind the TV, it has limited reception from my WiFi system so is finicky to get to work at all. You have few options when installing it for set up and it has to connecd to the WiFi system to even use those. Once you do finally get it to work, it is so slow. For a device of it's size, I guess it does work but unless something changes, the one is more than enough for me. Thankfully, it was cheap! I finally got it working by putting it on a long HDMI cable with an HDMI gender bender that cost an additional ten bucks. Still slow, but works.

I have one and I love it. 12 apps were just added to it repertoire, 3 which play local content, but still need work. You can become a beta tester of allcast, which is the app that was banned. Allcast streams local content to your roku, xbox 360, smart tv, etc without a chromecast. (This was the app that was banned from chromecast, developed by Koushik of Cyanogen mod). Even without the local content, the chromecast is worth every bit the price and is promised much more functionality this year.

@tbar: something is wrong with your setup or your wifi. You may need to upgrade your router or get closer to the wifi connection. I get 1080p quality over wifi with the chromecast. The quality is as good as my wired smart tv with 50 mbps dl.

vote-for3vote-against

Dang. Went ahead & bit the bullet. Student account worked.

vote-for3vote-against

@tbar: If it is slow, you may have a wifi range problem.
If your TV is on cable like your internet, you can put your modem and router at the TV and have a really strong signal.

@7acil: I'm running Chromecast off an Asus RT-N66U and it's working fine. The built in firmware for the router is actually pretty good, but you need to make sure your settings are set up correctly - on your router homepage click "WAN" on the left under "Advanced Settings" and make sure that "Enable UPnP" is set to ON. I believe that my router came set to NO as default.

@taurine: That's why I haven't bothered with one. The local media options are too limited. There are a ton of options in the <$100 category that off a lot more functionality. I still think the Chromecast is neat and cool in it's limited scope, but the real fun won't happen until you can play whatever you want on it.

Awesome... thanks for the post... just got mine. I haven't been a student for 20 years now, but my alma mater offers edu email addys to alumni, ergo I get to have amazon student account.

vote-for1vote-against

@runwilder: I'll try that, thanks for the help! I read up on the chromecast support page of supported routers and corresponding firmware. The compatible firmware listed for the N66U wasn't the most recent, therefore I assumed I upgraded my way out of being able to use it.

Is there any reason to get this if I have an AppleTV?

vote-for1vote-against

Bought it from Amazon a week ago and just saw this. Chatted with customer service who is issuing a credit to my payment method. We'll see.

Got one of these when they first came out and absolutely love it. Sure i can watch some stuff through my game system but this is tops for ease of use and I love that I can take it with me to friends and family's. As they add more app compatability it just keeps getting better.

@mrxiro: Do you have another TV with HDMI? Then, possibly, there's a value. If you principally watch itunes content, then no. If you don't watch tv with computer or phone in hand, then get a roku.

vote-for1vote-against

Soooo tempted to order two, but one will suffice for now. Amazon is the best! It really does pay to go back to college! Stay in school, kids. :)

vote-for1vote-against

@minos1: Amazon is really good with crediting when prices drop. Although there is a timeframe. Good luck!

vote-for1vote-against

@mrxiro: Getting one for the kids' room. Have an AppleTV, but that's in the living room. $25 sure beats $99. If I find it sucks, I'll just return it. ;)
