Kinekt Design Mechanical Gear Ring for $165
Sizes 9, 10, 11, and 12 are available.
This is just awesome and I'm seriously tempted to buy it, but they do not have my size(8) in stock and the band looks pretty thick which does not look good against my really small fingers.
Product Description:
"The Gear Ring is made from high quality matte stainless steel. It features six micro-precision gears that turn in unison when the outer rims are spun (as can be seen in the video). It is currently available for purchase in four standard US ring sizes: 9, 10, 11, and 12.
If your size is not currently available, please contact us and we will do our best to get your size in stock."

Regular price. Why is this supposed to be a deal?
Also a repost: http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/cb21f9ed-db1d-45d3-b784-ecb783dfeda8/kinekt-design-gear-ring
@brossow: Sometimes things are Deals because they're cool, or funny, or unique. It isn't always about price. Do you know some place this is cheaper?
Yes, it's a repost, but after 26 days, I'd say it's time. In addition, it hadn't made it to Popular before, and now lots and lots of people get to see how clever it is.
@shrdlu: So it there's a steady price, we can repost it after 3 weeks? That doesn't seem to make much sense.
@shrdlu: It's not clever. Gears have been around for ~2500 years. yawn
Wow, that's pretty sweet. Sadly, I don't have $165 laying around to spend on a ring, as much as I'd love to have one.
@kylemittskus: It wasn't whether or not the price was steady, but that it really hadn't made it to popular. Please note: I do not make the rules. However, it's always nice when something gets a second chance. BTW, 26 days is nearly a month, not three weeks.
My basic response was more to the point of price not always being the primary consideration for a deal.
@brossow: It doesn't appeal to you. Fine. Other things will. Nothing pleases everyone.
@shrdlu: it just seems weird to me to repost a deal that is constant.
And I was rounding down, you're rounding up. Apparently, I'm a glass half empty kind of guy and you're the half full.
This would be sweet if you were say an engineer or something...
@kylemittskus: Interesting. Even if rounding, it's still four and not three. Three weeks is 21 days. Half of seven, if rounding down, is three. Even if using four, that would make it, at most, 25 days. Voila! The numbers never lie.
Twenty-six days. Given this particular past month (when the deal would have been posted), there were only twenty-eight even possible. February is a little month. March will be much longer (I've requested that it be so, just for you).
Stainless steel has a spotty reputation for allergic reactions.
If you plan on actually wearing this ring, you want to make sure you can tolerate stainless.
@shrdlu: Are you really going to be that pedantic? My point still stands: reposting a deal every 26 days or 35 days or 12 days doesn't make much sense.
@kylemittskus: I thought I was being amusing. Sorry for your apparent frustration. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.
from an owner - how often do you catch your skin in the gears? i mean discounting masturbation, which could be freakin lethal with one of these things on.
@stthomas: It is because different stainless alloys are manufactured with various amount of nickel or no nickel, depending on the alloy. Thanks for pointing out the allergy issue.
@brianxlong: Sweet an owner, do you like it, is it as awesome as we think it is?
Also, the person in question might be joking.
@stthomas: Yeah, that would be me. If they make a version of this ring in Titanium, I'm all over it. I'd be tempted to try surgical steel, but stainless will give me a rash and cause my skin to weep pus.
@marcoselmalo: Nickel in surgical stainless too. I doubt they will make this in Titanium mainly because of cost and the difficulty to machine the small parts necessary for this ring.
@shrdlu: "It wasn't whether or not the price was steady, but that it really hadn't made it to popular."
So if you think something is neat-o, regardless of whether it's actually a deal or not (which is undeniably the purview of Woot), you'll just keep posting it until people finally vote it up? That's pretty sad.
I have to confess, I bought one of these and I love the heck out of it. I'm a mechanical engineering major... so that may be part of it. I'm using this as my class ring instead of those hideous overpriced things they try to sell. I'm happy to answer any questions.
@marcoselmalo: regarding the type of metal, this is off the faq page:
The Gear Ring is fabricated using 316L, which is the highest quality surgical stainless steel in the jewelry market. Stainless steel has properties which make it highly durable and resistant to tarnishing, fading, scratching, and rusting. It will not bend or break and is hypoallergenic for those with metal allergies.
and to the skin catching... I've had it for 3-4 weeks and have never had it grab any skin or hair, but I won't say it isn't possible. The ring does have some edges to it that might scratch something if not careful, but the same could be said of almost any ring.
@shrdlu: my apologies and my fault entirely. Tone is impossible to portray via text alone.
@davevh: "...It will not bend or break..."
That sounds like they're making a challenge hehe.
This is a really interesting ring. But $165? C'mon. I'm totally speculating, but I'd be shocked if this cost $10 to manufacture. I'd be tempted if it was $50.
@Everyone arguing. Yeah it's cool, but tell me when it's a deal guys! digg and reddit are for cool things that are normal priced, but I want you guys to tell me when its on sale for $99!
@kooosh: The gears are dynamic, it's not just a design.
$165 for a stainless steel ring is rediculously over priced....
+no specs on the type of stainless used. Kinekt is in the dark on this one.
boooooo
Cool. $165 cool? Maybe not. But sour grapes, it isn't in my size.
sorry, but a DEAL is actually all about price. why arent we posting masaratis here? cause at 100K they arent a deal! and neither is this.
if you think its clever or witty, tell your friends. this is woot, we do deals here. youre not being amusing, youre being annoying.
kthxbye
Its very cool but way too expensive.
It's a good deal because 2 weeks ago they were selling for $225.
@trekie86:
Actually, I think it's a pretty good price for the product, also note the 'lifetime warranty' they mention on the site.
I'm glad I saw it on here
@keithtmenard: Like hell it was. It's always been $165. For example, this link from a month ago today:
http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/50024/Gear-Ring-Jewelry-for-the-Engineer
crap. I ordered one and sent it back. The website looks cool, the ring sux.
but you know the second it rusts, ur skrewed
I just went to their website to see what these comments are all about. I work in a machine shop.... First of all, its made of 316L surgical stainless, it will not rust. Also, from looking at it, there seems to be at least 13 different cnc machined parts that goes into this very unique ring. This was not a simple or easy thing to make and thus the price.
This gear ring is over priced. I would consider buying it as a Xmas gift but not at this high price. It would be reasonable price at 69.95 or close to this. You'll sell so many more at a reasonable price. When it goes on sale, let me know. Thanks
