1000 watt... lol.
"Power Consumption: 180 watts"
1) L 2 read
2) Know your audio. 1000 is total watts. 200Max output RMS @ 4 ohms X 5 speakers=1000 watts. POWER CONSUMPTION WATTS 180 are electricity. there are electric watts, and audio wattage. know your (mod edit: profanity) before you make stupid comments.
touche!!!
I thought it meant 1000 watt light bulb. was gonna say, that must be bright!
Hmmm...I always thought audio was electricity, and that the power delivered to speakers is derived from the power drawn from the AC outlet, rectified to DC, filtered, and converted to varying levels of audio frequencies by the power amplifiers in the receiver. Imagine my surprise when I read the comment here that Philips has invented a device that can deliver over 5 times the audio power than it is supplied from the power line. They're going to be rich!
.
(actually, I think Philips is specifying the 'at rest' power consumption of 180 watts with the volume turned all the way down...)
OK, let's get this straight. It is not possible to buy an amplifier, let alone speakers, that puts out 200 W times five for $100. Well maybe, if the total harmonic distortion was 99%. There is actually a Wikipedia article on the subject of audio power although I didn't find it all that helpful. But I think the first poster is correct in the sense that an amplifier cannot put out 1000 W RMS using only 180 W at the AC outlet. We need an optical engineer or an audiophile desperately here.
@rono8582: I think you made a pretty funny post. I actually did go to class this morning to "L 2 read", so I now feel like I can reply to this post.
If the device draws no more than 180 watts, it cannot put out more than 180 watts, assuming there is no loss in the amplifier. That is, of course, a flawed assumption. Since Class AB amps have a maximum efficiency of less than 75%, I would assume that at most, this could put out 135 watts TOTAL RMS. So you divide that by six speakers, and you are looking at more like 12 watts each RMS. That is probably an overestimate. Now as for the 1000 watts claim. It is true that an amp can store energy in the power supply, but this is momentary energy. Sine watts are energy per unit time, this amp could drive a very large amount of energy for a very very short amount of time, but then the stored power would be depleted, and it would fall back to RMS output.
@enginerd94303: To top it off, the distortion would be insane, as the input signal would clip every time the power supply couldn't meet the amp's needs.
I hope this has been informative to someone out there.
I hope hope rono8582 will go "L 2 understand amplifiers".
@mouseanon: I'm pretty sure this is the ma power consumption of the system. This is something that a manufacturer needs to provide so people know how many devices they can run on a circuit. In my experience, it is usually overestimated.
Anyone know if you can use your own speakers with this?
@enginerd94303: Amen.
This thing might put out a total of about 100 watts of clean power split between its channels...on a good day. It's rated at 1000 watts PMPO which is essentially a useless rating.
To all Wooters considering this "deal". Don't. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to something that doesn't suck total ass. Even Sony HT-in-a-box systems are better than this.
thanks for the comments. i almost thought this crap was a good deal. but if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
I have this exact system. If you google the model number it's region hackable, gives great picture and sound. I have no complaints. You could use your own speakers but there are propietary speaker connectors so you would have to cut the wires to the included speakers.
I broke down and got one of these when it was on here before. Have had nothing but a hard time getting it to work properly. If this is the refurb, you need to download and update the firmware in order for it to work, which I have done. It still wont work with a HDMI cable. I got it because it plays so many different types of DVDs/CDs and plays from a flash drive. I havent tested out all the possibilities but now that its finally working (but not with HDMI) I will be doing just that...
This is just a pile of crap...BUT...it would make a nice little system for the bed room. It's not crap because it breaks, it's crap because the THD is too high and the sound quality is severely lacking, but for something that you don't care about, it'd be OK.
I bought one of these on Woot awhile back, and paid a bit more for it. I don't have any sound quality issues, although I keep my systems on the quiet side. I get the most use out of the iPod dock, which works with my 5th gen Nano, 5th gen iPod Video, and 1st gen Touch. The main downside is that it tends to be too quiet at 5 and too loud at 6. Volume goes up to 40, I've never taken it about 10.
Have to chime in on this one.
I bought this last time it was on woot, and have only had joy from it.
-Plays loud enough, with a clean sound
-(Wattage) Numbers seem sketchy, but it has a good sound.
If you want a better system , I have seen Onkyo's and Harman Kardons (5.1 and 7.1) on woot, do a search(they are just a bit more costly).
At the price I got them for (and at this price) there is not much competition. Especially if you are just looking for a simple Home Theater System.
Here is a little physics for you guys....Power (watts)= Current (Amps) x Voltage (volts) just tired of people not understanding what the heck it means
