With these kind of kitchen tools, my husband will start cooking! What a neat item!

It's only surface temperature, don't try to use it on meat unless you like overcooked steak.

vote-for3vote-against

The temperature range doesn't go up high enough. Tried to use it to check the header temperature on my last car - Temps got high enough that it hit the max range on this cheap thermo.

vote-for3vote-against

What's the temp range on this thing? Didn't see it in the description.

vote-for4vote-against

Ive got one that I use in the kitchen all the time. Like above said don't use it to check meat temp but to check temp of cast iron skillet before you put the meat in or your pizza stone its great.

@tsfisch: D'oh (answering my own question), didn't see the HUGE description below the big picture. Found it!

Only -30 C to 380 C? Newegg has one that reads over twice that.

Call me when that baby goes on sale, these inferior models just don't meet my needs.

vote-for10vote-against

@dedla @krdshrk @tsfisch : Hi, the temp range is -50 °C to 380 °C (Between -58 °F and 716 °F ). We also have one with even higher range (-50 °C to 900 °C) for $39.99:

Works great if you're cooking with sugar. I use one of these all the time.

Laser sight AND infrared, eh? I'm surprised this doesn't have 'tactical' in the title.

vote-for3vote-against

I bought one and found it useful for lots of small refrigeration and air conditioning jobs. Wish I had this back in the 1970s when I was a busy mechanic. Much better than my old 2 probe "Annie Analyzer".

Don't forget, these aren't just for the kitchen. Use it to find draft spots in your home, spot check a temp on a wall to see if the thermostat should be adjusted (baby's room for example), use it for other uses outside of the kitchen and you would be surprised at how useful they are.

Just don't point it in your eye

@suntekstore: Awesome. I've been looking for an infrared thermometer that can go over 1000 degrees F for a long time. Hope it work well.

@darkjedi26: If you are looking for degrees over 1000 F, I'd suggest the US$18.99 for you: http://goo.gl/3hx6P (Measurement Range: -58 °F to 1022 °F). You can also find more awesome thermometers by browsing the category :-)

Nice! Now anyone can measure the heat from their "new" iPad

I use an IR thermometer for pinpointing cooling issues under the hood of my cars. Knowing where hot water (or oil) is vs. cold can help diagnose bad flow or a bad part before tearing it apart. Every mechanic should have a cheapo IR thermometer handy for this reason...

I used to work in a biology lab where we checked the temperature of media using something like this before we add the antibiotic (~55oC). It's a sterile way and bit more sophisticated than the tried and tested method of testing it if it is "cool enough to touch with bare hands."

My brother brings his to the bar Just in case he get beer goggles o_O

Looks like a better price then Harbor Freight so I have one on the way.

Very useful for more than just the kitchen. Not so good at measuring liquids though, I tried using one to help gauge when to add yeast to some home brewed beer (you don't get more sterile that a beam of light!) and still ended up committing microbial manslaughter. :(

I bought one that was DOA, here is my email:
Sir, I received my thermometer tonight, but it does not work. I tried both the 9V battery that came with it and a new one in case the battery was dead. The unit will not work at all, no lcd display,..(edited to stay under 1000 charact)
HERE IS THEIR RESPONSE WANTING $20 MORE!! (after 4 emails from me):

We are sorry for the unforunate issue. I am afraid that there is something wrong with the 9V battery. Could you please buy a new one or repaire of it, we can offer you the repaire charge.

However, if you insist on sending it back to us, it will cost a lot of money and time for you to return it. We would like to resolve the problem quickly and more efficiently. How about we send a replacement to you if you do not mind paying 20 USD as reshipping fee? If you agree, then please login at PayPal and send the money to our PayPal account directly: efsinternational.admin@gmail.com. Write the subject as “Reshipping fee for order ST2012032961210 ”.

After their response (above) and being unwilling to send them $20 more, I repaired mine. Pull off the black plastic front (with laser), pull off black plastic back (bezel around lcd), pull off black plastic 9V battery cover on handle of unit, remove stickers that need it, remove two small phillips screws and split down center seam. The problem with mine was the trigger was NOT contacting the little switch like it was supposed to. while apart with battery installed I pushed the little switch and the unit worked. The hard part is aligning and reinstalling everything. (don't let go of the trigger/spring cause it'll shoot away, (don't ask)). Just go slow and careful. Now it works fine.
