Just picked up one of these for my wife to read borrowed books from the library. Today I read that Kindle will be adding this functionality later this year.

Yup - OverDrive downloads are going to be available in Kindle format soon. We're overjoyed at our library. I picked up this deal last week myself to replace my aging Sony reader. $100 was the tipping point for me. Having seen both, though, I'll say I don't regret getting a nook and not a kindle.

@carolynlibrarian: what are the signs of the aging Sony reader? do they not work as well after a while?

how does nook deal with scanned PDFs? i have somewhere hundreds of scanned textbooks, so i wonder how formulas and pictures in PDFs look. is there landscape mode?

@jamesbottomtooth: I love my nook, but from my experiences, skip it if you want .pdf functionality. I read a ton of chemistry journal articles, and the nook pretty much fails at rendering the majority of them properly. Not only to the point that it's inconvenient... it's unreadable. Your results may vary, but my were not desirable in the slightest.

@tennisplayer121: You can convert a pdf to ereader format (pdb)using Sony's free software, DropBook. I do that with many (no graphics) and read them on my Axim. It takes just a few minutes.

For those of you questioning the .pdf (or mentioning you do not like the rendering), check out the free software Calibre. It allows you to manage the metadata on the books and create the proper ebook file for your specific eReader. My husband has a nook but my daughter has a Kindle. We had mostly .pdf files, and I hated that some of the books that were written by more than one author were filed differently (an example, the Stephen King books that were written with another author would not file with the regular Stephen King books). My husband is very picky about how his files are sorted, so I went through and edited all of them so that they all said Stephen King and I just wrote a note in the sidebar that mentioned that another author was included. That way all of his books are filed under the main author.

Once you do a file format other than the .pdf, you are able to resize the letters and other things. I highly recommend it!

@qtpiestevenson: I've been wondering about something regarding calibre... Do you know if you can use it to change Kindle books into other types of files?

The one at Overstock.com doesn't have 3G capability. The extra $20 is for 3G.

ordered one of these last week when they were the deal of the day on regular woot. supposed to arrive next wednesday.

The plain Wi-Fi one is a good deal at $80 too though.

Anyone know how to confirm whether its Gen 1 or 2 nook? I thought they upgraded their e-ink. or was it just a software update?

vote-for2vote-against

@pz@woot: I have the regular nook, but from what I understand, it's a software update (version 1.5). Since these are factory refurbished, they most likely will come with the software fully updated. If not, you can easily update it via wi-fi or from here: http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nook/v.1.5.0/signed_bravo_update.dat

ETA: I bought my nook refurbished from the B&N store on Ebay, and it came fully updated.

Root it = Android iPad for $99

@axin92: Sorry....I have the wifi only. $80 still is a good deal and if you get a coupon from the US Postal service you can take an extra 10% off.

@mlemerle: I think this is the prior version that only has the small color secondary screen. I don't think it runs Android.

@oscaroni: Yeah, that's all well in good. I love .pdf when it's only text. I however, HAVE to have the diagrams presented in the material I read. There are lots of graphics that are absolutely required, and even with calibre, it doesn't work out well.

Anyone gotten any status updates on a shipping date?

vote-for1vote-against

I got a shipping notice 2 days ago. Checked the tracking should have it Thursday.

Yeah, got my notice that it shipped on the 29th, showing delivery by May 5. Can't wait!
