I've never had much luck getting FM transmitters to work in cities. They seem to do a pretty good job on open highway and around small town though. So good for trips through the open plains but less useful if you regularly drive in and around a big city.

Problem is trying to find a station-free frequency that isn't already being used by a broadcaster. With the enormous number of stations added over the years, it can be downright impossible if you're near any sort of large (or even medium-sized) city. Works great in less-populated areas.

FM transmitters are becoming obsolete as stereos all come with ipod/aux jacks nowadays
