"Proscan used to be the RCA high-end trademark; RCA (at least the TVs) was purchased by Thomson; they leased the proscan name to a Korean outfit that has the TVs made in China. I've never owned a Proscan (post RCA)... but the internet buzz is that they are of inferior quality and that it's virtually impossible to get support in the USA."
I used to sell Proscan(s) and can not recommend them.
I didn't know the history of Proscan, I do know a few people that have proscan tvs and have had no issues. At least coming from Wal-Mart, they have a lenient return policy. Also they sell a 3 year warranty for about $45, so you wouldn't deal with Proscan warranty at all if you purchased that.
@carardenney: Have you ever fought with an extended warranty company?
@kevskoolkars: I did once...in the Tunderdome. I'm still standing.
The only issue I ever had was with a 46" Vizio LCD TV, which quit working during the extended warranty period. I couldn't work with the extended warranty company to reach a time for them to come out and look at it and so I returned it to Sams Club - they happily gave me a full refund 18 months after I purchased the tv.
I have a 32" proscan that I purchased during a woot-off. Works like a charm and I use it almost daily as monitor and TV. This one was only 720P but does the job and the price seemed reasonable. Here is a link to the woot-off item: http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=3758323
I would feel comfortable buying another Proscan.
I can't believe nobody has mentioned the obvious about the inferiority of the 60Hz. Some people must be off their game today lol.
@jaredandsandy: I don't see the big deal about only 60Hz. My computer monitor is 60Hz and everything looks fine on it.
@chumbuh1: First of all I was being facetious because there is ALWAYS someone in these discussions raving about how bad 60Hz is. Secondly if you watch action films or any tv show/movie that has a lot of fast moving scenes you'll notice a HUGE difference unless you are legally blind. Just remember that when reading text, you cannot see the emotion it is typed with. Always assume humor if someone is sounding arrogant.
Its a 40" tv for $429, its not a $2400 tv. I think most people would enter this "deal" with reasonable expectations....
I bought this tv from Wal-Mart about a week ago. It was suppose to come in to day but i haven't gotten it yet but when I do get it Ill post my experiences with the tv.
I have had this TV for about a year now. No issues whatsoever, and picture is great. Not quite as good as the Pioneer Elite I have at home, but its still good HD, and its 1080p. Certainly not as bad as some of these guys are making it sound, and excellent for this price range. Makes an awesome TV for college. Bought for about $500 at best buy with service plan included.
Proscans may have gotten better, but a few years ago we went thru 4 of them before we got one that worked. They were pretty good about replacing them, although it was extremely tough dealing with the tech support from India. They never even wanted the third TV shipped back. Been there, done that, not doing that ever again...
I have this tv and after a weekend of use i noticed some issues. First off there is a little back lighting problem but is only noticeable on a COMPLETELY black screen. The other problem that happened, there was a ghosting issue when it went from a light colored screen to a black screen. I just switched what RCA ports i was using and the issue went away.
Overall, still the best $429.00 you can spend on a tv and works great(besides the small issues listed above).
@fobie: If you're spending $100 on a tv you should NOT have any issues after just one weekend. I hope you at least took it back & exchanged it!
Im all for buying "off brands" on some items, but when it comes to electronics I'll always choose a well reputable known maker who has great reviews. :-)
Now down to $399, still free shipping.
