Weber 7416 Rapidfire Chimney Starter for $17.49 + free shipping
I paid over $22 for this from HD three years ago! It works well, and holds up to repeated use.
These are HUGE! I got one along with a Weber Smokey Joe for my pops. They are almost the same size!
Also, Alton Brown trick for lighting these:
Stuff 1 or 2 sheets of newspaper in the bottom.
Drizzle with 1 tbs of used cooking oil.
Add charcoal.
Light.
Works every time!
I got one at home depot for 15 bucks the other day. It changed my life but I can't call this a deal for 18
Saw it at Lowes for $14.99.
Oh and link: http://www.lowes.com/pd_197879-505-7416_0__?catalogId=10051&productId=1057001
@ottoaim: Good stuff. Slightly smaller one at home depot for $8.88 http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202533482/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=charcoal&storeId=10051
@aqualungs: I'm going out on a limb here, but I believe Weber makes a couple different models of these in different price ranges.
This is the model I bought and I remember there was a smaller one, but I liked the capacity of this one better.
@ottoaim: This was for free shipping with prime or over a $25 order from Amazon.
For the same deal from Lowes it would not be cheaper, as you would have to spend over $49 for the free shipping. While it might be a great deal for walking in the store and buying it, you would still have to factor in the taxes to the cost.
Thanks for leaving the link, but leave ALL the information instead of just saying it's $14.99 and a better deal. It's a different deal........
We used to make these out of old coffee cans. Use a triangular can opener or drill to put a bunch of holes in the bottom and lower sides and you've got a chimney starter for $0.
@samstag: But where does one get coffee cans anymore? They seem to be moving more toward plastic packaging.
@filbie: Good question. I don't even know if you can still find the can openers we used, since they were designed for fruit juice that used to come in big cans.
I suppose you could get a metal bucket, but that's not such a big savings.
@samstag: Have you seen the price of coffee these days?
I use one of these (not this particular brand) and love it. I prefer charcoal cooking to gas, but hate the smell of lighter fluid. AND it has a taste that is transferred to the food.
