I've been waiting for this to go on sale for months. I just bought 1. If i weren't on my cellphone I'd make a post for the BlackWidow Ultimate...20% off and free shipping, same code.

What exactly merits the price of this? I'm sure it's well built and the reaction time is nice, but what else makes this worth the price?

@kgood: Gamers don't realize they are slaves to fashion, just like everyone else.

Consider it the "Gamer's Tax".

@kgood: Cherry Mechanical key switches at this price make this an excellent deal. The tactile response of a "Clicky" keyboard must be experienced to be truly appreciated. These keyswitches can make a dramatic improvement in your touchtyping speed, and reduce hand fatigue during long typing sessions.

As to a "gamer's tax", I'm in for two and I'm not a gamer, but I do crank out code, and this is a great alternative to tracking down more vintage IBM model M's.

Been wanting to go mechanical for month's now...this deal is finally what's bringing me to the noisy side of typing :-P

As for the "gamer's tax" Yeah, I may be a bit of a razer fanboy, but my lycosa keyboard is the only one I've found on the market with backlighting that's not TOO bright, and while not fully NKRO, it does feature an anti-ghosting matrix on the wasd keys, the ones I use most for gaming..a feature much harder to find outside of "non-gaming" usb keyboards.
Oh, and try to find me a mouse like the Razer Naga...c'mon, I dare ya :-P

@mrshimano: I've got several Model-M's. How loud is the keyboard in comparison? One of the main reasons I don't take in M keyboard is I don't want to anger my fellow cube mates ;)

@enantiodromia: While that's usually true for Razer products, in this case you are completely off base. The BlackWidow uses the exact same Cherry MX switches used in $120 keyboards. Look up Das Keyboard, Filco Majestouch, or the Leopold Tactile Click and you will see incredibly bland-looking keyboards selling for twice as much as this one simply because they have the same parts. Personally I'm pretty sure the gaudy typeface (your "gamer fashion") is what's keeping the price of this one so low.

Hmmm, it's already showing that it's "out of stock"

Got so used to the ergonomic boards I can't really use a regular one. But I'd love to find an ergonomic mechanical.

@mrshimano: I actually bought a few Model M's from my old high school when I graduated...they're ugly keyboards, but it's easily the best keyboard I've ever had.

I'm gonna go ahead and echo most peoples' sentiments: mechanical keyboards are great, and you won't find another full 120-key keyboard anywhere NEAR this price point. I have a Das Keyboard Model S Ultimate, and I spent almost twice the price of the above posted Razer BlackWidow. The BlackWidow uses Cherry Blue switches, which are VERY LOUD. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is something to be aware of. You wouldn't, for instance, want to use this at a library.

Any reccomendations for someone interested in a mechanical keyboard but not a gamer and would prefer something not too loud?

@kvenisn: Look for something with Cherry Black or Cherry Red switches for the quietest, though they will be pricey, as the blacks and reds are highly favored by the gaming community. Cherry Browns are regarded as an "in-between", and Cherry Blues are actually the least targeted to gamers.

That whole thread has a BUNCH of really really useful information about mechanical keyboards. Unfortunately for you, the blues (the loudest) are the most highly recommended for typing (as in, not gaming).

Good luck!
