Is it possible to add a case to this unit to turn it into an external storage drive? If so, is it advisable or a bad idea?

Yeah, it's possible. Just look for SATA external cases. I don't see why it wouldn't be a good idea. Go for it.

Check out Newegg or similar for a SATA box - typically inexpensive and occasionally decorative. You can also get "sockets", bases that you can just drop the drive into to use it as an external drive so you can swap piles of them around if you need to.

oh yes...i did exactly that with this drive Thermaltake has a great enclosure that is socket like in nature.

Yes, the Thermaltake BlacX HDD docks. Both single and dual slot availble on Newegg's black Friday deal currently in progress. And both include rebates.

These are great hard drives. I have two of them in an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro external case connected via firewire on my iMac. They have been running flawlessly for over a year. This is an excellent deal....go for it.
