Looks like a great, affordable school or work computer. Gaming, not so much because of the intel integrated graphics. Otherwise good components for the price. Will be more than enough for web browsing, document writing, and facebooking.

vote-for0vote-against

The more I see it, the more I hate the texture this computer has.

vote-for-2vote-against

I own one of these computers it has a much larger screen than just 17 in. It is also a rocking machine. The deal is also way better than the other laptop listed on sellout woot. Great deal on shipping.

I would buy a extended warranty because the company is sold off their computer division (that was HP correct?)

Good Luck my fellow WOOTHEADS

@markmc27:

If you think 0.3" is big, I feel sorry for you, especially if you're a guy.

vote-for1vote-against

does anyone know about this unit's battery life? if 8 hours, then this could be a very sweet deal, despite its refurbished condition.

vote-for1vote-against

Like it but not sure the texture seems like it would make it hard to clean, also makes it loom a little cheap

vote-for1vote-against

I downvoted because of the spider. I'm not ashamed of it.

vote-for2vote-against

@markmc27: HP is reconsidering selling off their computer division in today's business news. In fact, they plan to fire their current CEO. So don't give up on HP's computers for a while.

vote-for14vote-against

I am working on this very machine as I type. Overall, I am very pleased with it. The texture is rather nice and it is easy to clean--the grooves are not deep and have a rather fancified diamond plate look. I like the screen far better than others I have had. It seems to resist finger prints and does not distort much when touched. I do a ton of graphics and the screen is nice for that--good color, size and clarity. I LOVE having a full keypad available because I frequently use and I do not like the plug in kind. Battery life...ummm...8 hours? Not so much. I'll confidently say 4, and if you are conservative you can probably eek out more.

Cross you fingers that your monitor isn't messed up if you buy this... I bought it and it took 3 weeks for them to repair it... HOPEFULLY I will finally get it back tomorrow.

Summary is that you should be ready to not be able to use this right away.

vote-for1vote-against

I'd call it a good deal for your money.
As far as gaming goes, as long as you aren't trying to do something current, it should do fine. I mostly use mine for downloading videos, watching videos, deleting videos, emulators, Minecraft... bedroom.

Protip: If you are going to use this for Minecraft, don't expect to be able to run it on the highest settings.

vote-for8vote-against

The Good: Video display has a wide angle of vision, integrated sound is just fine for most uses.

The Bad: Well, not so bad if you're wintering in Alaska, but everywhere else, the machine gets hot at the drop of a hat in your lap. Then again, 17" should be on a table anyway, right?

The Ugly: Eh, nothing overly ugly with this machine. It works as expected - Expected meaning web surfing, netflix streaming or the like.

Also, if you're getting an extended warranty, ensure the warranty allows claims of moisture. The telltales in this machine will trigger with very little excuse. Just using it on a high humidity day can trigger them, and will instantly void your warranty in many cases. HP is pretty understanding about this bug, other warranty outlets might not be so generous.

@loktera wont even fully play minecraft, made me lol

First, pentium grade is garbage: Intel Pentium P6100.

Second, you can do a lot better for just a little more. There are some ASUS and Toshiba laptops recently on the market that run AMD A-Series processors (quad core) that are comparable to i5s with some tweaking and they run about $450 without even being on sale. If you watch the deals on the net, you can find an i5 with integrated graphics for around $500.

I guess if you aren't much of a computer user it'll serve the purpose, but I just don't see it as a deal. I would even go with a second gen i3 over this processor and those builds are only about $50 more usually.

My son bought this the last time it came up. He loves it. No downside.

I have had one of these HP for over a year now, although in the smaller screen format, all else is identical. I mostly wanted to appease the mind of anyone with concerns about the textured silvery finish. It resists soil, presents hey well and is pleasing to the touch. The touchpad which is integrated (same finish) is strangely intuitive and will not disappoint. The led backlighting makes it very easy for the eye with spectacular colours. As a bonus, the finish which seems to concern many, wears like iron. My hp looks like the day I got it and the touchpad operates faultlessly.

Bought this laptop last time around from Woot. Love it but hate it because the battery is constantly at 7% and plugged in. I've tried many things to get the battery to take a charge but no luck. Please help

vote-for2vote-against

ryancooke: If you mean the one that was on Woot a couple weeks back, that one had Phenom II 2.6 Ghz for $350, this is Pentium P6100 2.0GHz. Thought I saw the Phenoms on the last Woot Off too. bought the Phenom, I have no problems with the battery taking a full charge.

Linux enthusiasts should be aware the Phenom has Broadcom WiFi. I still haven't got the driver install right but I have no doubt I shall prevail.

vote-for2vote-against

Bought one with the same shell around black friday. These touch-pads are awful. There also isn't button to disable the touch-pad either.

vote-for1vote-against

HP integrated graphics? When my graphics died after one year, there was no fix that made economic sense. MoBo replacement? Hugely expensive. And don't expect HP to be there for you. Kept the HDD.

For all who buy, I hope things have improved on this not very portable laptop.

vote-for2vote-against

@goldsea: Typically, 17.3" screens take up too much power to last more than 5 hours. I've read that this laptop's life is around five hours, but that varies depending on your activities: using DVD, wifi and video editing will all drain the battery faster.

vote-for-9vote-against

Don't buy from Woot/HP, they will find a way to screw you and keep the profits. See: touchpad fiasco.

vote-for1vote-against

Skimmed through all of the comments, I guess I'll be the first to say it.

Anyone else get excited to see a Macbook Pro on sale, then sudden disappointment?

Not saying it's not a deal, I'm not really sure, but HP seems to like to emulate Apple, HP Touchpad included.

vote-for-1vote-against

I have no interest in Windows, and after searching online to see if this would work with Ubuntu Linux I didn't see anything. Looked interesting, but without knowing for certain all the hardware is properly documented and thus supported in alternative OS's, it isn't worth the risk.

vote-for0vote-against

What's the warranty on this refurb? I saw 90 days on another website. That's a little scary!

vote-for2vote-against

@sedo1800: It came up $17 higher from your link for me, plus shipping to my zip was $9.50, so it was actually 5.89% higher for me. I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, but in this economy that makes a difference in my monthly budget.

Last Saturday I got me a scratch and dent Dell M5010 (I don't care as long the unit works good) with a AMD Triple Core processor, Blu-Ray player, 6 gb on Ram, 640 gb on Hard drive, web cam, 15.5" LED screen and windows 7 home premium with 1 year warranty for $343.00 from Dell Outlet. Original price was 450 but they had a 20% off coupon on twitter @DellOutlet and free standard shipping (3-5 days)for a total of 373 with taxes (I live in Texas). So, I don't think this is a good deal. If you don't need a lap right now I would suggest to wait for a better deal or you can check this deal at Bestbuy

My friend has this exact laptop. She loves it. IDK how I feel about HP. I've only had a Gateway and my current Acer (who is owned by Gateway or vice versa)

This is the laptop I have:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=128531

This HP is essentially the SAME EXACT THING, except it's a P6200. Same RAM, HDD, specs. Everything. I paid $449 and got free shipping because Tiger Direct left it sitting in the warehouse for two days and they couldn't find it. LOL. (I originally paid for overnight but got a refund).

Wish it had a bigger hard drive tho. I store a lot of stuff. :)

My wife and I have two 1 year old HP G72 laptops with a T4500 processor. I get about 2 hours of battery life on WIFI without any optimization for saving battery. My wife's battery is shot and won't charge. Other than that we have been happy with them.

FYI - There is an option in Win 7 on ours that allows you to disable the touchpad if using a mouse.

vote-for1vote-against

@jclmaster: I have my touchpad disabled. I have a wireless mouse and that's all I use. I HATE the touchpad. It's annoying. You need two hands to do most operations w/ a touchpad and there are somethings you CAN'T do w/ a touchpad that you do w/ a mouse (and forget using graphics programs)

the first thing I do when I get a laptop is disable the touchpad, lol. ;)

vote-for2vote-against

I bought one of these, and overall, it's good for the money. After six months I started getting warnings that the hard drive was about to fail, and apparently that is not unusual for this model.

The hardest thing to get used to was the touchpad. There's no way to tell by touch where the pad begins and ends, and it's far too sensitive. It often can't tell a tap from a touch.

I'm not sorry I bought it, but I don't think I'd buy a second one.

@gwbaker: Or it's http://www.flickr.com/photos/26917592@N08/4983794690/ like it says at the bottom of the page, just like every other day they post their source.

vote-for0vote-against

If you scrolled all you way down to read this, I'll keep it short.

Bought this same exact laptop, refurb, perfect. Battery life is good, at least 5 hours depending on your settings and programs running.

Texture is cool, it shouldn't weird you out. Food texture should weird you out, not a laptop casing.

Runs like a brand new computer. Would never know it's a refurb. GREEN LIGHT. Good price too, I paid more than this for mine.

Long live HP.

vote-for1vote-against

I paid $375 for the same computer from Woot back in the spring. For the money it is great. It is fast and has all the ports I need, USB and HDMI. I never use the touchpad because I don't beleive touchpads were ever intended for serious long time use. The touchpad works but I'm lost with out a wheel. A small wireless mouse works for me.

vote-for0vote-against

These are great if you have never used a nice laptop before, and don't mind cheap junky plastic and miserable touch pads.

But hey, it's cheap, and that's all that matters!

vote-for1vote-against

I ordered one for my daughter. All she wants to know is if she can play SIMS on it. Does anyone know?

vote-for1vote-against

@vespasia70: if your talking about Sims 1 or 2 then yes, but with 3 I'm not sure but it looks like it has the graphics to play it.

vote-for1vote-against

@loktera: PROTIP: You're doing it (protips) wrong.

I've got a 1yr old G62 and have been pretty happy with it. I concur with others, battery life is overstated here. Just remember: don't leave it plugged in all the time!

Gotta let that battery WORK. Girrrrrrrl?

vote-for1vote-against

@vespasia70: Sims should be fine as well as most pre-2008 games. Might have to adjust the graphics on some games, however.

had it all set to buy and it never went through, so do I get another chance at this? =-(

Anyone else have any troubles with the built-in WiFi? We bought this for my mother in law across the country and I am now troubleshooting the WiFi. From what I gather the wireless network adapter is out.

She was very impressed up to this point!

vote-for1vote-against

It's my main computer. After opening it up I remembered why I swore I'd never buy a compaq/hp -- no attention to detail/quality in their designs. Mainly minor nuisance issues, but they annoy me -- the touchpad is awful. It's not recessed so combine that with the fact that it also isn't centered with the space bar and you'll find that the palm of your right hand is constantly touching it and causing frustrations closing apps, deleting large sections of text, sending emails prematurely, etc.
This next ones pretty nit picky, but it's annoying. For some strange reason HP decided to hardwire the bios with something like a "function lock". All the "F" keys behave as if you were also holding down the function key (so they default to dimming the screen and such) You can turn this off in the BIOS, but that fails to include shutting off the behavior for the print screen/insert key. In order to hit insert, you have to hold down the function key as well.
It's just a sign of sloppy design.
