I remember every 4th of July taking turns cranking (when we were little it was fun). We also took turns out of our playing to sit on the top that was covered in towels. Everyone pitched in and everyone enjoyed. I LOVE ICE CREAM!

@luvche21: but the cost is twice the amount, and less the size....$20 is a good deal for me and I only pay .89 for ice

@nangiggles: It's too tedious for me... I'd recommend the new ones that don't require ice, but a freezer bowl, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-ICE-21-Frozen-Yogurt-Ice-Sorbet/dp/B003KYSLMW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324066721&sr=8-1
You just have to freeze the bowl a day in advance (or as little as 6 hours if your freezer is awesome). The ice cream is amazing, plus you can make frozen yogurt, gelato...

I just invented a coconut ice cream recipe, and it was amazing! Just sayin'!

This one has a great price, but once I factor in getting to the store and buying salt, heavy cream, etc, then going home and making it and then washing it... doesnt sound so appealing anymore.... Id spend like +$6 for 4qt of ice cream... does anyone own one or have any insight on how tedious it may or may not be?

Seems like a good deal on a decent ice cream maker. Growing up, I was always the one tasked with churning the manual style makers and actually kind of prefer them. I may pick this up for the days I am feeling too lazy to do my own churning.

I wonder how hard it would be to replace the motor with a crank. Either to torture your children like you were having to take a turn on the crank or for camping. Ok, any camping I do has electricity.

Great, now I want some homemade ice cream.
