Wow. An iPod speaker with a murse.

vote-for5vote-against

I could totally justify buying this as part of my emergency kit.

vote-for3vote-against

So, how does this work in Low Light/Cloudy situations?

vote-for6vote-against

This is ten dollars cheaper than the Woot Off price last month.

The most interesting post stated that it would take over 22 years to get your return on investment with the solar energy savings with this item at the $79.99 price.

I have one of these and use it often. It works pretty well, and does have the ability to be charged up so that it can run without the sun for awhile. The only bad thing is that it automatically charges the iPod or iPhone that it is hooked up to, so it runs the battery down pretty fast, especially if you leave the device plugged in all the time like I do.

I remember last time people saying Direct Sunlight ruins ipods. So... buy this if you like to live dangerously I guess.

vote-for3vote-against

How many do they have of these things!?!

All I know is that I bought a Eton wind-up flashlight/usb charger from REI that killed my iPhone. During hurricane Irene last fall we were w/o power for 9 days and I got out the thing and wound it up and all of a sudden my phone got really hot and went black. The folks at the Apple store said "yep, this sucker's fried." When I called eton and explained my story, they forwarded me to the head of the tech department who, after I repeated my story, basically told me I was lying and that the thing couldn't even charge iPhones, which is funny, because the graphic on their website has a picture of an iPhone being charged by said device. I googled it and read stories about other folks having their iPhones fried from the same device, but the tech dude said he had never heard of such a thing. It certainly wasn't in my budget at the time to buy a new phone. But I use it for business and had to. I'm still angry about it! So long story short, never EVER buy Eton products. :(

And I was extra bummed because it was a Red Cross "sponsored" (is that the word?) device. wah.

@teenracer6: The unit runs off of its Li-Ion battery; not off of the solar panel. So you can run it on a cloudy day, or even in the pitch dark of midnight!

vote-for0vote-against

Is the Remote Control solar-powered? Or does it require removable (disposable) batteries???

vote-for1vote-against

I like the idea of using solar panels more widely as our lives become more and more "technologified" but it's just a bad idea to have an iPhone or similar device sitting out in the sun. Plus it could get wet, or stolen; and the panel takes half of forever to charge the unit.

It's a step in the right direction I guess...

So will it continue to charge if we are using in the sun passed the avg 4 hr playback time? Sorry if I missed that somewhere. Thanks!

I have a similar solar device and it gained so much weight during the recent solar flare episode, that I can barely lift it anymore.

I used to have a boom box hooked up to a 20-watt panel wake me up in the morning (I lived rurally at the time). Cloudy days defeated its utility, so I had to back it up with a clock radio. Nowadays, nothing short of Clocky will get me out of bed.

@cowboydann: yeah id cover my ipod with a cloth if i used it,,

The spec card from the Eton http://www.etoncorp.com/product_card/?p_ProductDbId=1691417 doesnt show that it is compatible with iphone4 or 4s. Anyone know for sure?

I bought this during the last woot-off and it's cheaper now. Meh.
I've been using this in my greenhouse. Speakers have good sound. No problems popping in my iPhone and using Pandora. Works great so far.
It appears to be well made. Has some weight to it.
It does come with a/c charger. I gave it one good charge from plugging in before I took it to the greenhouse. Since then, I just leave the solar panel up. When I'm ready to use it, it's charged and ready to go.
You can close the solar panel down over your phone/iPod while listening, if you want. This protects your device from moisture and light, if you want.
I'm pleased with it, it does what it says and works for my needs.

Anyone try this with a 6th gen iPod Nano? My nano works with everything else I own that's "iPod compatable" (regardless whether or not it specifically says 6th gen), but you never know.

I wanted to give you all a little more insight regarding the features of this product, direct from the source (I am on the Eton sales team...but no sales pitch here, just product info).

Solar Panel: High efficiency commerical grade laminate. This means that you will receive a charge in cloudy and overcast conditions, however, you will receive the most efficient charge in direct sunlight. It also comes with an adapter so that you can fully charge the Soulra before you take it outdoors.

iPhone/iPod Protection: There is a cover to protect your device from water (since the unit is splash-proof). However, this will not fully protect your phone from sunlight. The solar panel is adjustable so it is recommended that you angle the solar panel towards the sun while minimizing exposure to your device.

MFI Certified: Each Eton product that is engineered to be compatible with Apple specific products goes through extensive testing, objectively by Apple, before receiving approval.

@jasonking0351: This unit's intended use is not to eliminate the need for A/C power, but rather to provide a means to charge your device when A/C power isn't readily available. The statment that it would take 22 years to get your ROI from solar energy savings is an invalid argument because it's not the proper method for calculating ROI on this device. ROI would have to be calculated on the benefits received by being able to use your device when A/C power isn't available.

I know that the original statement wasn't yours, but it is completely ridiculous and you did promote that conversation to this thread.

I bought this the last time on Woot. The sound isn't great, muddy mostly, but on par with others in the price range. The biggest disappointment is that you really can't leave your iphone in the unit while you are actively trying to orient the unit to the sun for charging- my iphone shutdown for thermal protection after about 10 minutes on a sunny 50 degree day. I still use it, but I usually just charge it w/o the iphone in the unit. One workaround that seems effective is to make a cardboard canopy or visor to shield the phone compartment from direct sun while operating. It has worked well so far, but we haven't been much above 60 degrees so far-- we'll see how it works in 90+ temps. This would be most useful for situations when you really can't find an outlet to charge either your phone or a similar boom box. The bag is high quality.
A qualified good deal.

Just what I like to do:::
have a stereo system and apple product sitting out in the heat under direct sunlight!

hahahahahahahahahaha

vote-for1vote-against

Make sure you charge it before going down the old mine with transistor radio, er, iPod.

vote-for1vote-against

Looks kinda neat. Too bad it's not compatible with newer Touch gens.

vote-for0vote-against

The Soulra is compatible with newer generation iPhone/iPods, they are just not listed on the product card since this product was manufactured before some of the new Apple products were released. I have used it with my iPhone 4s and it both plays and charges as expected.
