Red Lobster's parent company (Darden, also owns Olive Garden etc.) refuses to offer employees sick time, so you better hope your cook/server isn't feeling under the weather. More info here:

@zippy the pinhead: If Dardin did offer all those "EXTRAS" you say they do not offer, then all Dardin employees would be hurt, as Dardin would soon be out of business. How many times do you believe these employees would "play" sick to get a paid day off? If you want to pin the blame on someone, how about starting with the current government administration who makes it far less expensive for businesses to hire ONLY part time employees.

...and healthy kitchen workers won't do unsanitary things to your food? Please. Kitchens are nasty whether people are healthy or not. Using and reusing food, sneezing and coughing without covering mouths, not washing hands or using gloves, picking things up off of the floor, etc. If I eat out, I just think about the fact that I've never been sick off of eating out. I also do my best to be pleasant to servers and employees (though that's not a fool proof plan). I worked in a kitchen and remember watching people smoking cigarettes over pots of sauce and soup.

Not to mention factors that kitchen employees can't change, such as the quality and "freshness" of the food being served. Bad management (especially chains where managers need to produce numbers) leads to some questionable use of ingredients.

On a side note, this might come in handy as I'm going here for my birthday tomorrow. Bring on the lobster!

@zippy the pinhead: They ALSO take the server's tips and split them among the staff, and withhold some of the money. This is a crappy company, and I don't patronize them!

Also, if you want clean, cook at home for yourself. Even most people's houses are full of nasty germ ridden sponges in the sink, ingredients that are never cleaned (salads, I'm looking at you), and serving dishes that sat on top of the cabinets for months before being rinsed out. Just saying.

I realize you mention this in regards to benefits, but whatever, I don't care. If you don't like the job, get a new one. If every American worker got every benefit they think they're entitled to, we would have no jobs. Unfortunately, most of us have to make sacrifices. My sacrifice is watching the pension plan disappear and our health insurance move to a high deductable plan with a health savings account. Copay limit has also gone from 1500 to 2500 over the last year. Nobody is saying Red Lobster employees have to stay at Red Lobster. Employment at will.

@tcayer: So, you mean they do what they are supposed to do? Most restaurants take out a minimum amount, but ask the tax men what they are supposed to do? Also, most servers I've met along the way forget to tip the other people that help them do their jobs, or lie about how much they received so it appears they are doing it the right way.

Seattle has a manadory sick day policy, there went the bus boy job, who clears tables now?

vote-for0vote-against

@retom7: I was going to say the same thing. I have been in the food industry most of my life and when the establishment didn't take care of the tips the workers NEVER got along and it passed on to the customers. Because as you said, workers (servers) will A - lie about tipping who they were supposed to or B - just not tip at all. And that isn't right. The busboy's bust there butts just as bad if not more then the servers in a lot of establishments. They should get something kicked back to them.

People will always have issues with these types of establishments. Don't take life so seriously, its too short! Eat (lobster), drink and be merry!

vote-for-2vote-against

@zippy the pinhead: Please, get a life. Life's too short to poop on the deals most of us enjoy. Go have some lobster and stop all this nonsense.

vote-for3vote-against

@coondogg97: Just not tipping when you have any kind of poor service IS RIGHT. If you say that the innoccent are penalized as well as the guilty, I would agree...so punch your TS card. In the meantime, if the customer continues to withhold tips for poor service, this will eventually come to the attention of the manager or the owner, as they will find it VERY DIFFICULT to hold on to help.

@acanarelli: Restaurant owners consider tips as part of the waitstaff salary, that is why waitstaff are paid far below minimum wage, less than anyone else in the restaurant including dishwashers.

My stepson busted his ass serving a table of 15 people who ran up a food and drink bill over $250 and the customers walked away without leaving any tip so he worked two hours for $1.90 an hour. Get a new job? Maybe jobs are flying out of your ass where you come from but they aren't here, so he can't just quit and still support his 3 year old son. Surprise!!! most waitstaff have families to support.

Having worked in a restaurant, I know what a hell hole they can be and what assholes customers can be, so I respect their work and do tip so they can be close to a living wage.

vote-for3vote-against

@dwieneke: Not calling you a liar, but a) No service charge for large parties? b) Your stepson is only capable of serving one table of 15 people over two hours?

OK, I guess I actually am calling you a liar.

vote-for5vote-against

@dwieneke: 1: anyone who tells you they make less than minimum wage is lying. Tipped staff gets paid normally $2-3 an hour, with tips expected to bring it up to minimum wage. In the event they do not get enough tips to cover it, the employer is required by federal law to cover the difference to minimum wage. Period. I've worked as a server, the few times my tips didn't make up the difference, I was paid more per hour by my employer to make 7.50/hour. Anyone who tells you if they don't get tipped they will never make more than 2-3 an hour is bold faced lying. Do some research on federal work regulations first. And if your work is underhandedly not covering the difference, sue. You will win every time.

2: Minimum wage is not meant to support a family. Minimum wage is meant for jobs for people who are uneducated(college/trade) and have no one to support but themself, like teenagers, etc. Your stepson should not have had a child if all he makes is minimum wage, he should get a real job.

vote-for4vote-against

@dwieneke: And just so you know where I get my information, I worked as a server at ihop and a local restaurant, and am now studying business law. I am not just pulling this out of my ass.

vote-for3vote-against

@acanarelli: I was talking more along the lines of the servers not kicking back THEIR tips to the rest of the staff. Most places will have the servers split their tips with the busboys, bartenders, bouncers, etc depending on the establishment. When the establishment gets involved with splitting tips everyone is honest. When they don't the servers usually screw the other staff.

+1 anyway, because I do agree with you on your point. Just not the point I was making.

WAAAAA.... why are you whining about the American way... you want fairness and equality move your whining butt someplace else... we all have options and if you do not like your job get a better job.... or maybe that sounds like tooo much work. WAIT... what about the lobster's right....??? Whatta buncha whiners... then again maybe this is just all about someone's moral superiority. Cry me a river...

@jussairish: Hahahaha... Best comment ever........

Just as an added note, in California servers make minimum wage PLUS tips. The tips are heavily taxed, but at least they're not making $3 an hour. A friend of mine works at Red Lobster...watch the newest Lobster Lover's commercial and you'll see her :) She's not completely unhappy with her job, but it probably helps being in a national commercial.
