Leone de Castris has been producing wine since 1665 in the southern Italian wine region of Puglia, commonly recognized as the heel of Italy’s boot. Here, the native Negroamaro variety really shines. It’s a lighter-bodied red grape with softer tannins, which is often blended with the more tannic Malvasia Nera in the Salice Salentino DOC to make a more age-worthy wine.
Since the arrival of consulting winemaker Riccardo Cotarella - the so called Italian “Wine Wizard” – Leone de Castris just keeps getting better. The 2008 vintage was the first Cotarella made from start to finish, and this Negroamaro blend is proof positive of his genius – a huge overachiever at a shockingly low price.
