FIRST SUCKER. now tell me how i will not regret this purchase. is the lens also Weather Resistant?

vote-for5vote-against

@jamesbottomtooth: Lens is not weather resistant, just the body. You won't regret your purchase, it's a nice camera.

vote-for8vote-against

"K-7 18-55 Weather Resistant Lens"

Yea, it's the WR version of the lens. I have the previous model (K10) that I picked up refurbed. TOTALLY happy with the camera. My 2nd Pentax DSLR. Do some research, and you'll find that Pentax cameras are the best bang for the buck cameras you can get.

vote-for6vote-against

I really wanted the new K-01, but this has me rethinking that.... Darn you moofi!

vote-for5vote-against

@brutherford: i double checked the description per @billwilljr
and it says
In the box:
K-7 Body
K-7 18-55 Weather Resistant Lens

so? is it?

also how come nobody else is buying it?

vote-for4vote-against

The picture shows the standard kit lens and the description says weather resistant lens. Which is right, the pic or the description?

vote-for4vote-against

"K-7 18-55 Weather Resistant Lens" from the "in the box" section. You may need to contact a woot representative to be sure, but that makes me think it certainly is the WR version.

FYI - in July, I bought a refurbed K200D for 400 off MOOFI, and I've absolutely zero complaint. I've gone whole hog pentax and LBA (Lens Buying Addiction) since I have.... Pentax seems about to anounce a new K5 replacement. Anyway, I digress... If I hadn't gotten the K200d, i'd be in now for the K-7 listing...

http://pentaxforums.com/forums for any questions you have going into this. It's a stellar community.

vote-for2vote-against

@JamesBottomTooth "also how come nobody else is buying it?" Most people are too hooked on the brands canon and nikon to take a look at Pentax these days. Seriously, I regret not a single iota the purchase of my pentax DSLR, and I highly doubt you will yours.

vote-for1vote-against

I think it's the standard kit lens, not the WR. When you click " I want One" and look at the descriptions it states this for the lens..

You want 1 Pentax 21717 DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL II Zoom Lens

I looked this up and it appears to the the standard lens...and not the WR

vote-for-3vote-against

@jamesbottomtooth: Compare it to the recent prices on a NEW Canon T2i and there is no comparision. This deal is not, as Yoda might say.

vote-for4vote-against

I have the K-x from a previous Woot or Moofi and absolutely love it.I've also shot Canon, and had been saving up for a T2i or T3i because my previous Canon went belly up.

However what pushed me over to Pentax, aside from a stellar image quality reputation, was that they have maintained essentially the same lens mount since 1975. That means you can use lens from the last 37 yrs on your DLSR and take them with you when you upgrade to a new Pentax in the future.

Pentax also has in-body stabilization. This means that 1) it works with those old lenses!! Not so Canon or Nikon afaik 2) lenses tend to be cheaper than brands that have the in-lens stabilization.

I've picked up some phenomenal lenses off eBay for chump change. I have one prime lens from the 70s whose IQ is blow-you-out-of-the-water. I kid you not - my Nikon and Canon pro-friends drool over it. I paid $9 delivered. I have similar stories for other lenses in my collection: primes and zooms.

Son, you won't be disappoint.

@gryhnd: Oh wow, I just looked it up and I could even use my M42-mount lenses from my old-ass Spotmatic on a K mount. How well do these DSLRs adjust to not having electronic aperture control?

vote-for3vote-against

@r4v5: Yup! Even the M42 screen mounts with an adapter are supposed to work. I've not personally tried an M42, but for the old Ka lenses you have to use it on M mode and set your aperture on the lens. But you can have the camera check the metering and set an appropriate shutter speed automatically. It's very cool.

@subrec: If you're stuck between a K-01 and this why don't you just get the K-5?

vote-for2vote-against

@r4v5: Perfectly, Pentax has done a great job of keeping all of there DSLRs able to use Post A-Mount lenses.

Also... +1's all around to my fellow Pentaxians!

vote-for2vote-against

@michoutdoors: i thought k-7 is more of the High-end than entry level, but i myself not sure why they have those categories, wouldn't be comparing this k-7 to canon 7D?

vote-for1vote-against

@jamesbottomtooth: This is a better comparison. The K-7 is a Prosumer body. The T2i is not. I have the newer K-5 and love it.

vote-for1vote-against

they fixed the description.. lens no longer WR per @brutherford

In the box:
K-7 Weather Resistant Body
K-7 18-55 Lens

vote-for1vote-against

@jamesbottomtooth: I'm not sure they match exactly, but if not 7D then 60D. Much better put together than the T2i. Each user has to decide which features are key to them. I'd summarize the tradeoff as Pentax gives better value, but Canon (or Nikon) makes more features available.

vote-for1vote-against

@jeremytheindian: because the k-5is almost twice as much as this. :)

vote-for1vote-against

@jeremytheindian: The k-01 and the k-5 are very different. The k-5 is the top of the line DSLR, while the k-01 is a new, mirrorless camera that appears to have an upgraded version of the k-5 sensor. The k-01 also uses the same k-mount so you can use all the same lenses, but it has no optical viewfinder. Here is a thorough k-01 review:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/pentax-k01/pentax-k01A.HTM

The k-01 is also very different from the K-7 being sold here, which is also a DSLR.

vote-for1vote-against

OK guys and gals...I am apparently stupid..is this or is this not a DSLR camera? I have never used one and have been wanting to get into one. Would this be a good place to start?

Thanks all!!

vote-for1vote-against

@kpearson: it is a DSLR. this is a 'higher' range camera. could be a good start if you can afford it, i guess there are cheaper 'entry level' ones.

i have/had Canon Digital Rebel that i bought around 2005, sort of first 'affordable' DSLR on the market. the mirror pin there was made of plastic, so all of those cameras were destined to fail soon or later. (fixable but not easy, i mostly ruined mine in the process)

i bought this as an upgrade. i hope they don't put plastic moving parts in these kind of cameras anymore.

vote-for2vote-against

This is very tempting! However, I think the K5 is better. But this is $300 less...

vote-for1vote-against

1) i wish woot/fedex required a signature or at least someone at the door, not just drop it off outside... $700 item.

2) first thing i noticed, there is something moving inside the camera, since its my first pentax, i didn't know its normal.. its Shake reduction mechanism that is locked in by magnets when camera is on. so don't panic.

vote-for1vote-against

Mine arrived today, dropped at the door by FedEx without even ringing. Always in a hurry, these Drivers.
Box in A-ok condition. Contents fine, except the lens -everyone get this..!- it is not the WR version.
Further complaint: No airbill included, no reference to warranty of any sort. No "refurb" stickers anywhere.
No warranty forms inside the packages either..! Only a card each with respective ser. numbers. Printed a receipt from inside my woot acct. - no reference as to warranty.
Called Pentax, explained the situation... "Call us if anything goes wrong. We may extend a 90 day warrant for
refurbished product, from day of receipt."
There you have it. What to say..?

vote-for1vote-against

@wolferwooter: what's the problem? you wanted a huge Refurb sticker on it? i like the fact that i have basically a brand new camera for a fraction of retail. If you ever need service, say it's new. why panic.

vote-for1vote-against

i jinxed myself. it stopped working..

vote-for1vote-against

@felonn: when turned on, LCD displays wouldn't show anything. on top battery lights up as full, auto-focus and shutter works, but it doesn't take pictures and doesn't show anything on the screen. i packaged it up and sent it to pentax for service.

vote-for1vote-against

Rats! Missed this deal. I hope they offer it again.
