Because of the massive footnoting in this novel, and how it ties elements together and explains this alternate world, you really need to read it on paper, where the text and footnotes are presented together on the same page. Unfortunately, the Kindle format just doesn't handle this very well, and it makes for an unpleasant reading experience. It's a shame, too, because this is really a wonderful book; one of my all-time favorites.
