What kind should we get for our Sexy TSA Passenger Screening Agent costume?
Requires a prescription from an eye doctor even for Halloween contact lenses with no correction. From their FAQ
"What about Plano (non-prescription) Contact Lenses?"
"Some contact lenses are available in plano (non-prescription). Sometimes, patients without a need for vision correction want to change their eye color by wearing these cosmetic colored or special effects lenses."
"While these lenses are considered cosmetic, "non-prescription" or plano, the wearer still needs to have an eye exam and contact lens fitting from an eye care provider because contact lenses are made from different materials, and the diameters and base curves are different sizes. What works for one patient might not work for another."
Aren't these illegal without a prescription? And even then, unless used to actually correct vision, any PHD prescribing them is committing a crime?
Bad News WOOT!
@lazarus1: What statute specifies that a PHD prescribing these is committing a crime?
@lazarus1: What they mean by "non-prescription" is that they provide zero vision correction. You still need to go to an optometrist to get a prescription for no one with zero correction. This is to make sure that you can have contacts in your eyes without problems.
Also there is no law against zero prescription lenses. Otherwise there would have been problems years ago.
This is a cool deal.
Also, I'm laughing at the people who tried to internet-lawyer here, and failed at it so terribly.
Whoa. These are expensive!
Go to WalMart or shop around. No way would I pay $100+ per lens.
@hustler03: The more popular ones are less expensive, about $30.
Still at $30 per lens.. That's $60 for a relatively small detail of a Halloween costume, but hey, it's your money..
Some of them you don't need a prescription for they have a 0.0 power in them, so your right 30 bucks per lens less 25% today only = 45 bucks for both appx
@hustler03: Think about that for a moment. You have something that is basically rubbing against your eyeball. Something that is made of glass or hard plastic. This is a time when quality is a good thing to have. WalMart is not known for quality, they are known for cheap.
Also - you either have to fax your prescription in or agree to have your doctor contacted to verify the script.
@gmontz: WRONG, WRONG, WRONG... You DO need a prescription for plano lenses. These are MEDICAL DEVICES capable of causing blindness if improperly cared for, improperly fit and/or no follow-up care.
You only get ONE PAIR OF EYES and only after permanent damage do you realize the TRUE COST. Unlike prosthetic limbs, prosthetic eyes do not restore any function.
Go to http://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm048902.htm
like their corrective counterparts, decorative contact lenses—sometimes called plano, zero-powered, or non-corrective contact lenses—are regulated by FDA.
...illegal to market decorative contact lenses as over-the-counter products.
"What troubles us is when they are bought and used without a valid prescription, without the involvement of a qualified eye care professional, or without appropriate follow-up care," says Saviola. "This can lead to significant risks of eye injuries, including blindness."
Gar, I have perfect vision so I've never had an eye exam. How long is this deal good for? I want these lenses but I guess I need to go get an exam first!
@lazarus1: you can have non prescription contact lenses, its perfectly legal, you just need to get them fitted by a doc.
@gadgetqueen: theyre requiring a prescription from a eye doc genius.
A halloween store near me had them for sale one year, no script needed. Sure that was illegal because the following year I went back and they no longer sold them :/
Even though a eye exam and fitting is required to order, I think many of these costume lenses only come in one size, and the sizes the doctor recommend probably don't get sent in most cases, just the one generic size they have.
With that said, I wore the supposed "generic" size for 8 hours straight and they weren't bad for me, but that doesn't mean the one size fits all approach will work for everyone.
Oh, and this may seem like a small detail but it really gets huge reactions! I cant tell you how many girls I had coming up to me because of the lenses, and many of them would actually stare into my eyes when I wore the Spider Web ones! On another note, the fright factor is great too. Wear them during the day without a full costume on and you basically scare the bejesus out of people! Definitely worth 45-60 bucks IMO!
