Nuts, just went and bought an Edwin Jagger from another deal. I had been looking at some of the Parker butterfly models previously.

Currently still in the "slicing up my face" phase, but being manly enough to stick with it.

im pretty new to DE shaving but I really like it. Against the grain still cuts me a little but its worth it! Anyone on the fence should get into it. I bought the Parker 99R from Amazon. PRO-TIP use real shaving soap. Pressure can stuff does NOT work well.

So the Gilette Fuzion gel won't work well with this? Already decided to buy Parker 71R. Just want to know if I should just relegate it (the gel) to a different use.

@lordbernkastel: It will work, but not very well.

You will get much better results with some proper shaving soap or cream and a brush.

I've been DE shaving for several years now. My Parker is probably the most aggressive razor I own, more so than even the Merkur Slant. I can get a ridiculously close shave with a good blade (I am partial to Astras and Israeli Red Personnas), however it is much more sensitive to proper technique than other razors, such as my trusty Edwin Jagger DE89.

I say that to say that if you're new to DE shaving and end up having trouble with the Parkers, you may need to use something gentler and work your way up to the Parkers.

Good shaving cream is also important, as others have mentioned. My current cream is TOBS Sandalwood which I face-lather with a Semogue boar brush.

IMO, at this price, it's worth a shot. Mine is certainly well-made and high quality, just a little more aggressiveness than I prefer to use on a daily basis.

@lordbernkastel: Yep, i've tried Gillette fusion gel w/ my butterfly (vintage Gillette using feather blades). It gives me a rough shave. Much happier using Colonel Conks shaving soap, which is cheaper anyway. Amazon it.

Thanks for the advice. So sick and tired of using that stuff. Haven't had a perfectly clean shave in years. Last time I had one was when I got a straight razor shave from a barber. Best feeling ever.

@daedalus454: That's really interesting. Is your Parker a 3 piece or a butterfly? I've always felt my Merkur was more aggressive than my Parker 3 piece.

Goes to show you everyone's face is a little different and shaving is an art, not a science.

Thanks for sharing your take on Parkers. Its always nice to hear what others have experienced.

@shavelikeaman: I have been DE shaving for about 5 months now, and love it! I currently use a Merkur 34C HD, and I have really enjoyed that so far. However, I have been wanting to try out a Butterfly style razor, and this looks like a great time to do it.

My question though, is I see the different models on your site, and is the only difference in the butterfly models the handle? or are there variations in the razor portion also?

FWIW ... My shaving cream of choice is Trumper's Coconut Shaving Cream ... amazing stuff! And I follow up with Trumper's Sandalwood Skin Food.

@shavelikeaman: My Parker is a 3-piece, I believe it is the 98R model. I think the slightly wider blade gap as opposed to my other razors, combined with the substantial heft of the handle, is what causes the aggressiveness.

@orangejungle: I believe the head is the same for all. Some of the models differ in where the twist knob is located. Some are at the bottom of the handle and some are up top.

I'm going to be talking to my distributor tomorrow when I place a resupply order. I'll ask him if there's any other differences I'm not aware of and will let you know.

For anyone planning on ordering, I am almost completely out of razor blades. I only have Lord's left and only and handful of those. I have more blades enroute, but if you were planning on adding some blades to your order to take advantage of the free shipping, you may want to wait a few days.

@orangejungle: I spoke with the distributor. The butterfly heads are all the same design. The only difference is the handle style and the weight.
