Forgot to mention, most albums count as 12 credits so you can get 4 albums regardless of the amount of songs on them.
Does it cost to sign up?
Its legit, though there was a one dollar charge on my debit card. 50 songs for 1 dollar is a steal.
I got the $1 charge also but when you consider the amount of MP3s you get - it's a steal
Be careful here. Read the fine print. You may have only been charged $1 dollar - but you are now signed up for a subscription that you must cancel before the free trial period
"You will automatically become a paying member unless you cancel your subscriptions before the end of your free trials or before you exceed your free trial credits."
50 free downloads is great. But just make sure to cancel!
I can't seem to get the download software to work it gets to 99% then stalls
I was a member for about a year. Awesome prices and there was a lot of music I wanted to pick up. Harder to find new mainstream stuff, but you can save albums to pick up later and you'll know by the end of the trial if it's worth staying on.
On the subject of the $1, many places charge and refund a small amount to ensure that your card is valid. I guess some charge that and keep it though, so you might want to check back in a day or so.
There was some alternate download software that worked really well, but they stopped supporting it. You might be able to search for it; I think it was on their developers page.
Been a member for a long time. Nice thing is that they grandfathered me with my plan, so I get a much better deal than new signups. I've discovered a LOT of great music there over the years like TV on the Radio, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Decemberists, Vampire Weekend, and Santogold.
emusic is great. been a member for a while and they recently expanded their library quite a bit. I have no trouble finding great stuff and the prices are very good.
How hard is this to cancel after the trial. Do you do it online or have to call?
Bad news... they charged me $1.00 for the music, another for the audiobook, and then $9.99 for the audio book... I guess that one wasn't free. But you can opt not to get the audio book portion. A little disappointed, but it was all still worth it.
So the music is DRM free then?
Yes, DRM free. But READ the terms of use. Looks like you will receive a charge if you download any bonus songs during your trial period....in other words, not free if you cancel the subscription. Please correct me if my interpretation is wrong. It's in bold type in Section 6 of the terms of use.
Good luck on getting out of the contract. I tried this site last year. Took me 3 months and 9.99 each month before I was able to get them to remove my membership
I just checked my bank and no $1 charge, so I am assuming that it was just a $1 hold? my bank upates every day and there was nothing there this morning as far as charges go.
After seeing this woot I went to the site. It took me forever to find some of the songs I wanted, and other songs required you to buy the whole album to get the only song you wanted. I cancelled this one fast, but only after downloading about 40 songs. Having to buy a movie soundtrack album for 12 credits to get one song that normally costs one credit isn't worth it.
Note - if you do the trial option you will not be allowed to use your "free" download credits to get some of the more modern/hit/poular songs.
On the topic at struggling with the site to cancel a membership, just call your credit card company and tell them not to authorize any charges to the site anymore. They will end any charges and your membership should be canceled automatically.
I was a member of this site a long time ago music is not that good some even sound like they were recorded from radio by microphone so beware. Check out comments about this place before you put in a credit card....
longtime (like since 2001 or something like that) member - lots of changes over the years, but overall this is one of the better online music sites. and they've been DRM free all along. if all you want is the radio hits or major label stuff, stick with iTunes - this really is for more small-label and indie stuff. They've added Sony and Warners stuff, but it's primarily backlist, not the newest stuff. And for those complaining about having to download the whole album for certain tracks, that's almost always on a major label and forced on eMusic by the label. eMusic has always tried to allow ala carte downloading, with deals for full albums being a new feature.
I wanted to update this from yesterday... the $2.00 they charged, as well at the $9.99 charge was gone from my account after I canceled. So it looks like everything worked out. :)
eMusic is getting more mainstream music all the time. Warner/Rhino/Atlantic records were just added about a week ago. Still, it is more for people that like so called indie music, jazz, classical, electronic, world, and other music that won't be found at big box stores or will be fairly expensive on iTunes or Amazon. Never really had a problem the sound quality with any of the recordings I've downloaded
I tried this service a couple times, both times I canceled before the trial and both times they said they never got my cancellation and tried charging me for the subscription. There response was, "we have to pay the artist some how". Such BS.
I'm never trying the service again. There selection of music wasn't that good either.
I like Napster's new service though. They just raise the monthly price from $5/mo to $7/mo, unless you do the $15 every 3 months, which is what I do. You get 5 mp3 credits every month plus you can stream Napster's entire music catalog online, without any software. I like that you can listen to the full songs before you purchase. Nice for parties too.
The $15 every 3 months one you get 15 mp3 credits every 3 months. Which comes in handy because I like to purchase albums. An album that costs $9.99 will only use up 10 of your credits, even though most albums come with more than 10 songs.
Oh, and yes the MP3 downloads or DRM free. The album art is like 1200x1200.
Just to forewarn you, I signed up for this around Christmas-time, and the selection of MP3's is pretty slim. I kept searching for relatively popular artists and songs, but it kept coming up blank. Apparently, they don't have agreements with that many artists. Also, even when you DO happen to find something you searched for you can't buy it unless you have a paid subscription. In other words, you can't get certain songs/artists with the free 50 MP3's. I wasn't impressed with the site at all.
I was tempted to try this as they have a couple of rare albums I would love to have, but after reading comments here about cancellation problems, I checked cnet for a review of the service.
They gave it good ratings, but looking through user reviews it seems that pretty much everyone who tried to cancel their trial membership had the same billing issues people mentioned here.

@makalleli: Thanks for the link. It's nice to see that other people that have also been scammed are able to get the word out about these thief's.
I previously had an account with them, and enjoyed it a lot until their rates doubled roughly a year ago. I note though that it's still about half the price of iTunes, and I'm thinking about going back.
They have a lot of experimental electronic music and a fair amount of industrial and other stuff I'm into; I can't comment on their mainstream selection since I don't really care about that.
When I cancelled, they gave me a bunch of free downloads to try to convince me to stay. I used up those downloads and then cancelled anyway, with no hassle whatsoever.
