AVG also has a free anti-virus product:

The free one doesn't come with the firewall, "safe-downloads", or "identity protection". If nothing else, the free version is a decent way to try before you buy.

this is a good price if you want to support AVG, but the free version works great if you are just a regular casual home computer user

When compared to other software, AVG is very light on resources but does not offer the same quality of protection.

I find that, overall, Avast! is a better choice. The newer builds of AVG aren't as lightweight as they used to be. Kind of bloated, actually.

Why bother with AVG or Avast! when Microsoft Security Essentials is free for home use and works better then both of them together?

as joshtheitguy said, AVG and Avast! both have terrible detection rates. MSE is a better product for antimalware/antivirus, and it's free.

Avast is free for home users. And I like it lots.

I agree with klisk. In the last number of months, AVG has gotten very slow on my machines. I removed it and now use Avast (avast.com). It doesn't bog your machine down except for when you first boot up, and it updates, but even then, nothing serious.
