Time Magazine
“One of the Ten Greatest Graphic Novels of all Time, children will read BONE for its breathless adventure and sight gags, older kids and adults will appreciate the themes of blind fanaticism and corrupting power.”

Entertainment Weekly
“BONE is storytelling at its best, full of endearing, flawed characters whose adventures run the gamut from hilarious whimsy to thrilling drama. Along the way, Smith’s musings… take on a greater relevance than you’d ever expect. Grade: A.”

Publisher's Weekly
"Charming, character-driven fantasy with an elegant design and masterful story-telling in the tradition of Walt Kelly, Charles Schulz and Carl Barks."

ALA Booklist
"BONE moves from brash humor to gripping adventure in a single panel."

If I remember correctly, this volume is all black and white, whereas the individual ones are in color. Just in case that makes a difference to you.

Stupid, stupid rat creatures.

My two cents worth for anyone thinking about picking this up. I bought this a few years ago at about the same price a Amazon. The book physically is rather cumbersome and awkwardly sized at around 1500 pages with a size of 9 x 6.6 x 2.4 inches, with a glue binding. This means that the spine will very likely crack and pages will fall out unless you read it gingerly. Normal wear and tear destroyed our public library copy after only a few months. Very thin, almost translucent pages all in black and white (scholastic versions are in color). I would recommend only if you are absolutely intent on reading the complete story asap for a discounted price.

@chiefjoe: You type that into a panel on deals.woot - and it makes me grin.

What a great series :)

It's well worth picking up, for anyone interested. As for it being in black and white, the original comic was in black and white, it wasn't until it was re-released a few years ago that they were colorized. Also, buying the individual books will cost you $70+ rather than this price.

And I didn't have any problem with the book holding up. There may be differences in my version since I had the first edition and I know they've changed the cover since then, but I was able to read it without the book looking any worse for wear.

This is a volume worth having for the adults and kids alike. Great as it was to read it, this book got better once my husband started reading it to the kiddo and doing the voices for it.

I have no idea what edition ours is, but it is a huge volume with the simple paper and glue binding. Still, it's held up to several cover-to-cover reads, and some not so mortal combat in our house (careful, it is big enough to really hurt someone!)

As a long time comic book and literature fan, BONE easily ranks as one of my favorite Graphic Novels. And it's incredibly new-reader friendly. Whenever any friends of mine are thinking about getting into comic books, this is one of the first things I hand them - with the humor, romance, and heroism - it's the one I always have trouble getting back from my friends.

...they keep wanting to keep it!

And for those curious, my binding hasn't fell apart yet despite multiple reads and loaning it out to several people. If you don't treat it like crap, the binding should hold. Although, I do have one of the first editions.

And to reiterate what a poster above stated: the colored versions are the reissues - the original was in Black and White - and I kind of prefer it that way. Mostly because the color makes it seems a bit too cartoonish in spots when it shouldn't be. The B&W adds an appropriate amount of grit to the necessary panels.

Great book, picked it up for $20 at a convention last year, and, this is a great deal, more than worth it!!

Just be aware that they are re-releasing this exact book, but all in color. It looks gorgeous in color. I recommend waiting for the that version to release.
