As a tv repairman for 20+ years I seldom saw any difference in picture quality using expensive or cheaper standard quality cables. The real difference is durability. If you use cheap cables than expect they may not last long, especially if you change connections a lot. I know lots of sales people that will say the expensive cables are a must, but I defy anyone to tell the difference by looking at the picture.

Anybody that knows how to do a bit of research will find that the technology behind HDMI signals renders the argument of cable quality almost mute. You either get picture, or you don't. An expensive cable will produce no better image than an inexpensive cable. I've hooked up enough HDTV systems to know that expensive only means one thing, and that's just that you paid more. I provide my customers with inexpensive cables for setup, and leave the marked up, high price cables for the retail folks that simply don't know any better.

Here's a bit of a review that can help explain this in more detail.

Having gold plated HDMI cables makes about as much sense as having gold plated USB cables.
