I see $69.99 when I click the link...I smell an update coming.

vote-for15vote-against

says $69.99 plus free shipping. @thefenst is trying to pocket the difference!

vote-for4vote-against

$69.99 + free shipping!

I have no personal experience with these, but I did see a middle school aged girl with one (I can tell cause I wondered what the cheap overgrown iphone looking thing was). The screen looked like plastic, pretty sure it was, and thin plastic. It was also concave which is why I think it was plastic. The light shining off of the body of it showed that the entire body was, cant think of the word for it, but wavy. I wouldn't be caught dead holding it, must less paying for it. Honestly, just from the looks of how cheap this thing is in real life, I wouldn't pay $5 for it. It's truly terrible.

vote-for24vote-against

Quote the review " ..so understand that this device is something to be avoided, cheap isn't the word I would use. Deficient, worthless, and by all means terrible "

Powerful stuff !

vote-for10vote-against

Cheap tablets aren't worth it. Unless you enjoy being frustrated.

vote-for8vote-against

The icon in the picture says 'App Market' which is NOT the official Android Marketplace.

From what i understand, the Android operating system can be freely used on whatever device will support it BUT access to the official Android Marketplace has to be licensed by google to the manufacturer for that line of devices.

Consequently, most 'lower end' Android devices do not and will not have access to the official Android Marketplace.

vote-for28vote-against

I got one for christmas... and I'll let you in on the real info.

Battery life is soso. 2-3 hours with wifi on and playing video.
Wifi off, low screen brightness, good for 3-4.

This is a hackers dream though. Slatedroid and others(uberoid) have these imports pretty well figured out. Roms are ready for updating, as long as you know which one EXACTLY you're getting. different color headphone jacks = completely different roms :-( Make sure to backup, or download the factory rom before rooting/flashing.

That being said, once you get ACTUAL android on it, it's nice, for the price.
It'll do netflix, angrybirds(with backgrounds off), and just about any other basic task you can give it. Makes a pretty good e-reader, as long as you only read a few chapters at a time. Every bit as good as or better than the Pandigital Novel.

Ram is the limiting hardware factor. 512 is OK for most apps. Cpu speed is OK but not stellar. Do yourself a favor, and order a stylus at the same time.

vote-for3vote-against

biglots has a nextbook on sale tomorrow for 129 with some pretty good reviews.. anyone think they are worth that?>

vote-for5vote-against

Jeebus, people... if you're that hard pressed, save up another $80, get a refurb'd Nook Color for $150, and install CM7. You'll be worlds better than getting one of these.

vote-for12vote-against

This be perfect for leaving in the bathroom to listen to a podcast or radio stream in the morning, or for browsing the web while you take a dump.

vote-for1vote-against

Would you get it for a toddler?

vote-for3vote-against

Bought one, when another deal arose during the holiday season. I was twice sent defective tablets, the first for the battery life so I did mess with it for a few days. It was terrible. The screen was easily scratched by simple stylus use. Don't bother.

vote-for1vote-against

Would you guys recommend this for a poor college student though? I've been looking to get one of these for a while now, since the Kindle Fire is way out of my reach.

vote-for-2vote-against

@smalik6: Reading through the posts above doesn't dissuade you? If you have $70 to spend, I guess this might be better than hookers and blow to spend it on...but I'm saving my money.

vote-for9vote-against

@smalik6: Patience. Next month or so, $99 + shipping. Novo 7
http://www.ainovo.com/
There's video on Youtube as well, not shabby at all.
Is it great? Probably not, but if it's even OK, the rest of the lower end(pricewise)may be forced down.

vote-for3vote-against

@havocsback: thank you for that information... that novo 7 looks amazing and is 1080p.. The videos made it look super responsive so I will wait a while for that one.. thanks again...

vote-for3vote-against

@hovocsback: I was seriously thinking about jumping in on the novo7 that's available now, til I saw that shipping was $60

vote-for1vote-against

@roamingdragon: First time I've ever seen three 1s. The suggestion to save your pennies to get a Nook (or maybe a Fire for a little more again) might be smarter. On the other hand if you are happy with rooting and trying out different ROMs this could provide hours of entertainment.

vote-for4vote-against

Stellar reviews on Amazon. If you add them all up, they total 3....that's 3 reviews, at 1 star each. Hmmmmmmm. Might want to stay away. Sometimes "too good to be true" is just that.

vote-for1vote-against

Yea that Nova model looked good for $89 but $60 is crazy.... I am needing something for my 3 year old that loves Mickey Mouse on Youtube... Thought this MID tablet would be it but not after reading the reviews

vote-for6vote-against

@semer9: I got a similar one for my 3 year old. She loves it! I was able to put some basic apps on it for her to tinker with. The touch screen requires more pressure than my smart phone but that is fine because she always pushes very hard on the screen anyway. This is actually why I bought it for her, to save my phone! The battery life is pretty short but so is her attention span so it's a wash.

vote-for2vote-against

A friend's son has one of these. Horrible. I might spend $10 on one as a hacker's toy to put new firmware on, but I'd have to think about it for a bit.

vote-for6vote-against

Bought one of these last time they came up.

Bottom line is, you get what you pay for. I was expecting a cheap tablet to screw around with, and that's exactly what I got. For playing Angry Birds, light web surfing and checking e-mail, it's just fine. The internal memory, as mentioned above, leaves something to be desired. You can't install too many apps, or you won't be able to download/watch videos (a la flash-embedded movies).

My other complaint is the screen. It's plastic, and scratches easily. But again, meh, it was $70.

vote-for2vote-against

agreed on most comments above. this is one tablet you will regret buying. Poorly made, not very responsive. you get what you pay for with this one. I made the mistake of buying one a few months ago and the only thing I could do with it is make it a glorified alarm clock.

vote-for2vote-against

I have used this....even at this price it is a waste of money. AT MOST the battery will take 20 charges.

vote-for3vote-against

Cheap tablets are generally a very very bad idea, and this one looks like it's not bucking any trends. I don't know who's upvoting this, but you may be doing a disservice to your fellow wooters...

vote-for4vote-against

Warning for people looking at the Novo 7. While they do get good reviews, most of them run off of a MIPS processes (rather than ARM) and have several incompatibilities. Most of the apps on the Android Market do not work with a MIPS processor.

HOWEVER, there are a few versions of the Novo 7 that do support the ARM processor. Novo 7 ELF and Novo 7 Advanced II are the 2 that come to mind. Novo 7 Elf does come with Android 4.0 ICS and is about $150 or so and comes out within a week or so, if I recall.

vote-for1vote-against

100% piece of crap! Bought one for $70 to play angry birds and surf. touch screen almost useless, never could get wifi to work--in a major metro or 'cafe'.

vote-for1vote-against

Got one of these for Christmas.... and now it is a play toy for my 1 year old little girl who throws it around and beats on it... cause that's all it is worth. This thing is crap crap crap.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm looking for a cheap tablet that I can keep plugged in on my kitchen counter. All I will use it for is to watch Netflix (via wifi), listen to Pandora, and possibly look up a recipe now and then. Would this suit those needs well, or can it not even handle that? Is there any better option?

edit: I would be comfortable hacking it, if needed.

vote-for3vote-against

Beware of Ice Monkey - I recently bought a cheap tablet from them - they didn't tell me it was refurb'ed...when I got it there was a sticker on it saying it was refurbed - it worked but I noticed it didn't hold a charge when I unplugged it....turns out the battery was blown out (I opened it up carefully and saw the piece of battery that had shorted out..there was a piece missing). Well, I had to pay $11 to RMA it back to them - still waiting on the refund. I ended up going to Best Buy and got the Acer Iconia A100 for $213 out the door - I'm very pleased...I get about 5.5 hours of battery time and I'm going to tweak it to get more time soon. I won't do business with IM again...that was my first & last purchase from them. Buy something decent - spend the extra money...otherwise it's wasting your time. ;-)

vote-for3vote-against

And yet, it's probably still better than the Nook Tablet since Barnes & Noble locked it down with their last firmware update.

vote-for2vote-against

This product was mentioned in a thread about $100 tablets just yesterday.

Member @techie413 mentioned this unit as a Do Not Buy, writing,
"I saw a daily deal for a 7" MID with Android 2.1 for less than $100, and it turned out that they sent me two different defective units, so I cancelled that order. SO that is the DON'T BUY recommendation. Last week my new Superpad III arrived (also known as the Flytouch series). It's somewhat generic with no logos, but it's worked great."
I'm curious if this is the same vendor that @techie413 dealt with.

@wingnutzero: I bought a Nook Tablet for my wife for Christmas. It is still easily rooted. There's just an extra step before you can root.

vote-for1vote-against

Im curious how this compares to the Vizio from a couple weeks ago. I know someone who got that and was kinda summed i didn't.

vote-for1vote-against

@sontiago: To be clear, the screen on the Novo7 itself is 800x480, not 1080p.

It supports 1080P output so you can watch videos on your HDTV. That's pretty impressive for a $100 device.

vote-for2vote-against

i read alot of tech reviews, and one thing that keeps getting repeated, is "no tablet, is better than an off brand android tablet that sells for under $100". if you want a cheap tablet, get a kindle fire. stuff like this should be avoided like a plague rat with herpes.

vote-for1vote-against

I got a similar tablet from pandawill a short while ago:
http://www.pandawill.com/m009s-4gb-7-inch-tablet-pc-android-22-dual-touch-via-8650-wifi-black-p52314.html

The PandaWill page lists it as the Via, but the tablet and booklet call it the MID.

Similar price range, similar specs, same design as the icemonkey deal, though the model name differs.

#1) If you are expecting to get a $500 piece of equipment for $70 you are a delusional idiot. This is no iPad. Don't even think it is. If you want an iPad, shell the cash.

#2) Resistive touch screen. This means it is pressure based. It has multitouch, but since it's resistive, the multitouch gets easily confused. Sometimes it won't track perfectly well either. You don't need to manhandle it, but you do need to apply pressure.

#3) Angry Birds. It runs it. A bit choppy, even with background animations turned off, but it works well. This does not mean every other app will work on it. I have found quite a few that won't. I have found several

vote-for1vote-against

that do.

#4) Appstore. It comes with its own non-official appstore. I don't run it. It has the apk's for google's market, and has it installed (mine did). I have not tried it yet. It runs android 2.2, which means you can install Amazon Appstore. I did. It works fine.

#5) It's plastic. This means it scuffs easier, cracks, the screen is a little floppy (maybe, mine wasn't too much), the screen will bend a bit with your touch. It's CHEAP. Why do you think it only costs $70?

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. But that's because I wanted a cheap tablet that could take some abuse. My nieces and nephew love having a tablet they can play simple games on, and especially angry birds. I love having a tablet I can give them and not care about.

The biggest reason I am happy with it is that I realized I wasn't getting a $500 electronic device for $70. I got a $70 electronic device for $70.

To the person that said it was less responsive than an ipod: A new ipod is $200-$300 device. This isn't

vote-for1vote-against

This also runs the 8650 chipset, which can run the Uberoid rom.
www.techknow.t0xic.nl/forum

Google will tell you all you need to know.

uberoid is easy to install, has working Google Market, can load the Amazon Appstore, tends to be faster than the included roms, and comes with a bunch of very useful apps.

I haven't installed it on mine yet (8650), but I have installed in on an old m003 (8505) and it works very well there.

vote-for2vote-against

@havocsback: Which Novo are you looking at next month?

2 of them are already available on the site you linked,

Also: 103.99+free ship beats out the $89+$60 shipping charge from the main site for the Paladin.

http://www.pandawill.com/ainol-novo7-paladin-first-android-40-tablet-pc-7-inch-8gb-1080p-black-p54556.html

Also heed the warning below about the processor and app compatibility.

vote-for2vote-against

I bought one of these last year to throw in my lunch bag for work. Rooted it with uberoid, and it works great. Games, movies, net, books. I bought a second one and set it up identical to mine for my mom for Christmas, and she's having fun with it. It is a cheaply made, plastic unit, disposable, but it does serve its purpose. The environment I take mine in, I wouldn't take a more expensive one. Mom, being technologically behind, gives her a stepping stone to learn on. Plus I don't care how hard the granddaughter handles it.

vote-for1vote-against

@tonymuzz: That's why patience is needed. It's supposed to be for sale in/shipping from the States next month, shipping price will drop drastically.
More importantly, IF that happens, watch what happens on pricing to other, higher priced tablets. This isn't meant to compete with the iPad, but it should do very well.

vote-for1vote-against

@anotherhiggins: I'd be grateful if you could point an android noob like me towards some instructions on how to root a firmware-updated Nook Tablet. I got one for Xmas myself and was only able to get Amazon Appstore and a few apps sideloaded before the big lockdown.

vote-for1vote-against

This is one of the biggest pieces of crap on the planet. I got one as a present from a friend. I hated hurting his feelings, but he said he was going to pick up one for himself, I told him only if it's free! You have no access to the Google marketplace, only some place that I'm pretty sure is Chinese. And, although I don't read Chinese, I'm pretty sure all of those apps say, don't pick me, I'm crappy too! Horrible!

vote-for2vote-against

@wingnutzero: Sure. The first step is to roll back the version to 1.4.0.
Instructions

Here's the first of 2 videos that will walk you through the entire process. They're long, but the guy never shuts off the camera, so after watching you'll know exactly what to expect.

The videos are based on these 2 threads at XDA:
Driver setup
Rooting

I had problems getting the drivers to work. See my post (same screen name) in the XDA thread above, or here's a discussion about it on AndroidForums:
Driver setup

Note: If you have a computer that you haven't connected an Android device to via USB yet, you can probably avoid all driver issues!

vote-for1vote-against

so how is this +155 when every review is scathing??
