Has anybody ever really had to crank this thing for power and if so how long did you have to do it.

Also can you charge it from your car cig lighter?

It seems expensive I can get the same thing from Costco but without crank for $50.

If crank really works I will buy.

Don't know how well this will work, but you can supposedly get 25% off your order with the coupon code 25SAVE as well. I'm not sure if it will word with the woot coupon code or not though

This is a pretty good deal from Brookstone. I've owned one of their earlier gen models and it worked okay. I do not believe this one can be charged via cigarette lighter or AC power ahead of time, and can't find anywhere that it says otherwise. Unlike the earlier model I bought, this one seems to have a much heavier duty crank, which is a relief. I never broke the old, flimsier crank handle, but I always FELT like I was about to. I may buy this upgraded one just for the beefier handle, battery display screen, and the USB ports.

@captainsuperdawg: The coupons don't stack. Too bad, or I definitely would've been in for one.

It's feeding me a figure of $150 shipped, with the WOOT offer code. The coupon code appears to invalidate their free shipping offer going on now as well. Someone who actually buys one let me know for sure. I'm on the edge of buying one already, and if it gets free shipping as well that'll probably put me over.

They have/had those old milsurp Chinese hand crank power gen's at Cheaper Than Dirt for awhile :D

(It's like a hand-pedal system w/ seat and all. Picture a reversed bicycle...half reversed. It's like something you'd see connected to an old radio in a trench lol - they were pretty cheap too..

From Brookstone copy

"Keep it fully charged by plugging it into AC outlet, and you'll always be ready for storms, blackouts and dead batteries. But if the charge runs out, no worries... simply turn its crank and you're back in business!"

Also, looking at enlarged pic at Brookstone site it appears to show DC Input jack and another jack that might say "Solar IN", whatever that means.

@tscottme: I'm just guessing, but I do believe the DC in jack is for the wall adapter to plug in. Theoretically, since DC is DC, if you found a car cig adapter with the same voltage you could probably just plug er in there and charge away. However, for 150 bucks couldn't you buy a dc-ac converter for said cig lighter and be done with it? Not sure if I need one or just really want one to shut up my end of ze world buddies who tell me I'm not prepared.

I like AC/DC, but who is Hand Crank? Can I use this to play other bands?

vote-for4vote-against

Don't expect the hand crank to actually run much. A fit cyclist can only produce 100-200 watts with HIS LEGS continuously. Handcranks don't use the legs, so expect a max of like 10-20 watts in short bursts furiously spinning the crank. It is a battery backup with a novelty crank.

For this price I could buy a small (600-800 watt) gasoline generator at Aldi.

Very expensive. The hand crank is a nice feature and fairly unique but not enough to justify the price without more info IMO. Did anyone find info on the A/H of the battery pack?

I can run a computer on a set of "D" cells if I want to continually turn the crank.
I couldn't find a manual with any specs. I just would like to have more information on this device.

It would be better if the unit had a detachable flashlight. No fun lugging around 10 pounds of batteries while the rest of the family sits in the dark. I read wo glowing (no pun intended) reviews on their website. Why do I suspect they were written by marketing types. LOL.

One of the reviewers is a "staff reviewer". The other one looked realistic.

@jdmm72: A generator needs fuel. Fuel may be hard to find when the SHTF.

@azscott: plus, ones like this are likely more portable than a gas generator and requires less maintenance like oil. Plus, you can us these indoors unless you like the emissions from the gas generators.
