Obvious Nanny-cam, this needs to be in my house!

These cameras are great fun, and great pretty versatile.

The catch is... Whether or not it's a REAL Foscam camera rather than say... A cheap Chinese knockoff of... a Cheap Chinese security camera. Whoa, paradox!

I bought one a few months back. The image quality is surprisingly good, way superior to my (few years old) Panasonic webcams. Wireless stayed connected. Night vision (IR) performance is quite decent. Only flaw to me is the somewhat flawed Firefox support - I couldn't get two way audio to work over Firefox, it only worked with IE. The ActiveX interface is definitely better.

@theimmc: You can also use various remote security camera apps on your iPhone/Android phone if you use DynDNS and route the ports through your firewall.

Got one on Amazon a few months ago as a baby monitor. I paid $30 more than this, so it's a good deal. The audio support isn't great, but it's not bad. (Monitoring the camera audio is okay, but the volume at the camera for audio you send to it is very low.) It stays connected to the wireless network most of the time, but needs a reboot about once a week or so. The picture quality is better than I expected. The tilt/pan controls are wonky at best, but once you get it where you want it, you can save the position to a preset. If you want to access it from outside your local network, you'd better know your firewall software because you have to open ports for it. It lacks SSL encryption, which seems like a major omission for an internet-enabled security camera. Overall, I'm very pleased - it has room for improvement, but is quite good for the price. I'm thinking I just might pick up two more at this price. Just have to check with the spousal unit in the morning and see what she thinks.

Can i use it as a security camera for outside, say near my garage, I have extenders connected to my router so range is not the problem. im worried about rain and such..... thanx for any inputs.

I've had one for about a year and a half. Color is washed out and the audio doesn't work. But it suits my purposes (patient monitor) and the price is right. I was amazed at the functionality packed in there for the money. It's suitable for indoor use only as it is not weather protected. Support is almost non-existent. There is a US distributor but unless you bought it from them, they won't help you. I run it off a cat5 Ethernet and have never had a problem with it losing connectivity or having to reboot. I do wish the audio worked, however.

@searchneverend: I'd guess not on the outdoor use. I have one of these that I bought a few months ago as a baby monitor, at which task it excels, but it's pretty obviously not weatherproofed at all. (Obvious when you have it in your hand, that is.) There are various weatherproof enclosures you can get for these cameras, though; you might even be able to use a Gladware-style container, or one of your extras from your many Lock & Lock sets, as a makeshift enclosure; chances are, it'd stop the night vision from working as well since plastic and glass both block IR pretty well.
Here's an Amazon listing for an enclosure; it's kinda spendy, though.

You might be better off with an out-of-the-box wireless weatherproof camera. I don't know anything about this one, except that it's cheap:

Does anyone know if these are legit or knock-offs from China?

vote-for4vote-against

@cdbonds2001: They are all from China. US Foscam is merely a distributor.

I have a number of these Foscam cameras (this model and others) and I have used numerous ones for client installations. This camera is one of the best IP cameras that I have used, not only in price but also features and quality. It also has a mic (and mic jack) and speaker out jack so you can use it for 2-way audio as well.

As for the knock-offs, there are a number of companies selling rebranded versions of Foscam hardware. I have tried some of these products, but while the hardware is almost exactly the same, the software is generally much worse (more bugs, less access to features, ...)

@rak0ribz: I use the Foscam FI8904W for outside my house. Its basically the same camera, just without the Pan-Tilt and audio ability. It is a bit pricier than their indoor models, but its one of the cheaper outdoor cameras out there.

To those saying that the support is nonexistent because Foscam won't support it unless you bought it from them: You are incorrectly interpreting Foscam's statement. They will only provide support if you buy it through an authorized dealer. And Ben's Outlet IS an authorized dealer, as you can see by checking this page: http://foscam.us/where-to-buy.html

I bought my first one on Amazon where several reviews make the same mistake, but Amazon is also an authorized dealer so when I needed support it was there.

The tech support I received was very good. They responded quickly and accurately in perfect English, and my problem was resolved very much to my satisfaction.

@cdbonds2001: These are real. Ben's Outlet appears on Foscam's authorized dealer list: http://foscam.us/where-to-buy.html

@searchneverend: No - don't put this outside. Even sheltered, the dew will quickly turn it into a paperweight. It's indoor-only. You might want to look at the Foscam FI8904W. It's very similar, and good for outdoor use. It doesn't have tilt/pan, though.

@nimlet: that's the older version... look at the model number. amazon claims the new version is the one woot has. then again, the older version looks good AND amazon ships faster and takes returns if it doesn't work out.

Gotta expire these...poor example being set. tsk.tsk.
