From: Matt Rutledge
To: All Woot Employees

Team, I’m emailing this to inform you all that I plan to resign my position at Woot effective Friday June 15th to move on to future projects with fewer acronyms. Undoubtedly, a few words will not give justice to the quality of experience I have had working here and how much I’ll miss you all, but I’d be remiss to stay silent.

Through your hard work and inspiration (or at least suppression of your better judgment), we created one of the most refreshingly unique companies in the world; the most reluctant retailer possible—pitching as few items as we could with the least amount of hype for the least amount of time. We were idealistic and irreverent, and no retailer was more principled or transparent than us. Even in the worst of times, like when we found ourselves commercially viable, we fought the good fight and retained the honor and contrarian upside in our brand, our community, and even our dead-horse-beaten bags of crap.

Retail team, Wholesale team, Woot Workshop, Development, Customer Service, Community Deals, Operations, Accounting, HR… so many of you practice what can only be described as art and I am proud that in so many positions at Woot we developed great artists. I could not be happier that so many of you are growing and thriving in the current environment whether you started recently (finding us quirky) or long ago (finding us stupidly chaotic). I have the utmost faith that you will continue our success and expand the boundaries of retail for years to come. Remember: Always be the breakfast octopus.

As I move on, one of the things I truly look forward to is being impressed and humored every day I check Woot as a true customer and fan. I’ll soon get to be one of the crazies shouting “I stayed up for this?!!” with sarcastic enjoyment. Please don’t let me down.

Woot, it has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your semi-fearless leader for the past 18 years…
Now get the hell out of my house and have fun at college.

Should there be opportunity for a happy hour on some future Friday in a town nearby you, first rounds on me.

Matt Rutledge
Founder & Worst CEO Ever
Woot Inc.

TL;DR: You make Woot unique. I am proud to have been a part of what you are building. Carry on.

PS. obligatory sentimental pop-culture diversion in lieu of cat pic

I gotta say, @snapster, since I've known you for years, I still think there's a greater-than-zero chance you plan to show up for work on Monday and shout "MOST EPIC TROLL OF ALL TIME!!!!"

/tear - Thanks for giving me a place to waste so much time

Thank you for creating Woot! and for your years of service at this odd, (not so) little (anymore) company that's become so much more than just a site where one product is sold each day. Woot brings me multiple smiles each day; helps to answer my questions about, well, life, the universe and everything; helps me find great deals on things I need and things I never knew I even wanted and, overall, makes my life just a bit better on a very regular basis.

Best of luck to you in your future endeavors whatever those may be.

I'm with @slydon -- does anyone know if @Snapster is wearing is "It's a Trap!" shirt again?

But seriously, we've all had a great many years to work under Matt and it's been a pleasure. Not many CEOs will let you throw baseballs at them, hang out with you at the Christmas party, or let you fight for promotions by chair jousting in the office. As sad as it is to see him go, I think we're all excited to see what he does next.

Everyone thank you so much for an amazing send-off here. I was originally thinking I'd post that shirt as an easter egg for someone later to find with a few chuckles and then one thing led to the next and now I'm getting accolades for being a quitter. You are all too generous - the primary thing I'll take credit for during this fun ride was being a good listener. There are so many good ideas and collective wisdom if you allow the potential to listen. I'd say any good company is almost entirely plagiarized from ideas its customers bring to light. Luckily no one keeps track as you collect the best ones. I promise there are still great listeners on the Woot staff. I look forward to joining you in lobbing ideas their general direction.

I told the Dallas team I'd buy them a beer here if they'd agree to send me off - so I'm off for a happy hour shortly!

@snapster, I told everyone that this was coming, but no one ever believes me.

Keep in touch. We'll leave a candle burning in the window.

I raise my coffee in salute to you.

In before "Woot has sucked since June 15, 2012".

This is totally a RAW DEAL! I'm tattling.

I'm thinking this is just a ploy to get himself the coveted black triangle. :(

@snapster: I bet your folks disagree with that "...Worst CEO Ever" moniker. The Wooters, too, will miss you and your influence. Wishing you much more success and happiness down the road.

Love the tags btw.

Good luck and thanks for all the monkeys.

What Happened???
Say it isn't so......

Thanks for Woot, it's shiny. Good luck to you. Live long and prosper.

Thank you for creating a world that I have happily lived in for the last 7 years!

I have enjoyed all the friends I made here. Some of who have become real life friends, not just internet friends.

I have slept better at night, knowing that the leak frog will watch over the toilet when it is making a strange noise.

My kids and their friends roll their eyes at the woot shrines around the house...the robosapian, the monkeys, the woot off lights on the tv. Yet they are the first ones to check out if there is anything good in the boc. They all have endless woot shirts.

You had an idea and ran with it. You took all your friends along for the ride. That is special.

You changed my life in ways you will never know. I never imagined so much of my life would revolve around a web site.

Thank you.

I hope you find happiness in what ever you do next!

@snapster: although your current triangle only states your rep as 85/100, i'd give you a solid 87/100. add in the grading curve and take out those overachievers like @lichme, and that bumps you up to a solid 92/100.

so long and do let the door hit you on the way out. at least that way, woot employees can build a shrine around your butt print.

good luck in your future endeavors!

You will be missed, @snapster, but your influence that has made Woot the way it is will always be around.

Best of luck to you, from the resident shirt nerd.

Why are we up voting Snapster's leaving?
Shouldn't we be down voting it?

Good luck with your future endeavors! Will we see you around still, and perhaps in the deals.woot chat?

Alright deals.woot community: Let's give him a send-off to remember. Remember the Netflix downvote rally? Let's reverse that for @snapster 's deal! @cowboydann, rally the posse!

@snapster: As tribute, every year on this day, I shall plug in my set of Woot-Off lights and have them spin around exactly 8 times, 1 for every year of your Woot life while 8 screaming flying Woot Monkies sound their somber dirge.

@snapster: I remember when you told me to shut up (in much nicer terms). I was upset and upsetting the apple cart but you contacted me directly and responded to my contacts to you. Pretty impressive. That was years ago so I'm not going to succumb to the traditional "it was better back in the day" crap.

So let me be one of the first to say I think it's awesome that you're leaving. Not because I don't like you, I do. Honest. And not because this place will be better without you, because it probably won't be. But because life goes on and moves forward. Personally, I think you should use this new found freedom to take a really long vacation and drive around the U.S. visiting black triangles and longtime woot members. You could hand deliver bags of crap or just knock on the door and say hi and then leave.

That would be epic.

I was a young artist.

I had no money.

I was hungry.

I had bought a Woot Battery Brick.

I cracked it open, and sold the batteries piecemeal.

I survived that cold winter because of that, and now I am successful.

Thank you Sir Rutledge.

@dmmutti: one of the constant feedback reports to developers of the deals.woot reputational system was "hey this is not a tough enough rating system if my account keeps getting a black triangle" (though I see that even coasting 6 months I'm still purple!)

plus, more importantly, it'd take the fun out of it. Make it harder for all!

thanks for the nice thought though!

@snapster: Damn!
It all makes sense now.
You've done a bangup job here, may it live as your legacy for a long time to come.
Best of luck in your future endeavors.
Hopefully we'll see more of your "creations" in some other space.

Aww, bad news from my perspective. You will be very much missed. I got ready for a luncheon meeting and now must redo my makeup as the tears are rolling down my face. Much good fortune for you and your familly, and I just could not envision you in this place with these changes and especially the penny auction ads, etc. I have been here since 2004 and I, too, will be departing. Tell me sometime where we are going! God bless.

@snapster: In the words of Ralphie, "Son of a Bitch."

@snapster If I had wings, you would be the wind beneath them. However, as I am neither avian nor pterodactylian in nature, and most certainly not angelic, I hope you will settle for being the wind betwixt my cheeks. And I say that with the utmost love and respect possible. Good luck to you.

You guys need to give Matt a 21 monkey salute as he leaves today. You know, get up on the roof and fire them over his head in show of respect and solidarity. Either that or get EVERY employee on the roof and pelt him with a shower of monkeys.

Either way, this is a sad day for the world of woot.

Amazon ruined woot... (this had to be said...right?)

Sad to see you go! Thanks for dedicating the past 8 years of your life to this site we all love. Best of luck in all your future endeavors. If you ever find yourself in the NYC area, drop me a PM, first round is on me. We owe it to you for all the fun (and cheap products, but fun comes first) you've brought into our lives.

This shirt is not even on a USA origin blank. You really have sold out!

That being said I wish you luck in your future endeavors, and don't forget your towel.

Well...I hope you're proud of yourself! You've gone and made an old lady cry...these are very real tears falling on the turtle of my Slow Death woot shirt. :-( If this IS an epic prank I congratulate you as I have fallen for it hook, line, and sinker.

I'm going to go take a nap now and hope that I will wake to find this was just a very bad dream...

If not, best of luck Kiddo!! You have done an AMAZING job and you WILL be missed...

I have only been around for a brief period compared to some of the others here, but your influence has definitely been noticed and appreciated. This place has become a fun hobby of mine and has saved me some money in the process (unless you count all of that stuff that I didn't need but bought it cause it was a hell of a deal). THANK YOU!

First it was the CarTalk guys (Tom and Ray Magliozzi, known as Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers), now this!
I think so!

Adios, @snapster, from your fishy friend.

See you under the sea. :-}

@okham: Sorry I'm late. Things are crazy busy at work and me packing for my vacation this weekend. I'd rally the posse but I'm sure they've all got around to upvoting this deal.

That being said, I'm terrible with words and typing them into sentences but I'd love to thank @snapster for creating such a great site for all of us to congregate. I wish I could have been around for the more random times, but this last year has been a lot of fun for me around here. I'm eager to see what you have planned for the future. Also, Thanks for always making time to come down and personally address more concerns in the DW.Community, (More than I'd expect from anywhere else at least) and know that you will be greatly missed by all of us.

I wonder if Mortimer and Monte will have a nice farewell song for him, @matthew?

@snapster: One nice thing about the parent company you brought us into is that they deliver fantastic bookends direct to your office:

Damn you Amazon

I knew you'd be the end

Best wishes on your endeavors.

@snapster: I hope the butt deals didn't come across as a giant mooning. That wasn't the intention. Also, I hope @slydon is right that this is crafty ploy. However, if it isn't, I hope your future endeavors are as fruitful.

@snapster: Thanks for taking so much of my money :) It's been a blast to say the least.

@shrdlu: Holy Smokes Batman ... You totally did call it ... " @snapster I will soon be able to be closer than ever to the community!" ha ha

Good luck @snapster

Maybe it's because he wants to be eligible for @jumbowoot coupons... I hear the employees aren't eligible for the freebies

@snapster: You'll be missed. All told.

@bingo969: Don't forget a chorus of Leakfrogs. Thanks for everything @snapster and good luck with your future endeavors
