I'm using one right now from the last time it was offered on the main site. The curved design of the base helps with more airflow than the typical flat designs. You will have to give up a USB port, though - there's no hub/repeater.

From the pic, for a moment I thought they were selling 5 1/4" floppies.

here's a review on one color, I was going to buy this for my girlfriend UNTIL i read about her spefic computer (HP DV6) not working well on this one, since the CPU/GPU cooling is on the top left by the screen's hinge, away from the fan on this pad. This will help ventilate for sure, especially compared to nothing, or your bed (uhmmm... bad idea), but think about another option if your main fans aren't near the center or drawing/expelling air from there.
If you have center-positioned main vents on your lappy, this would probably work better; consider where your computer gets hot and look for a better option with a movable fan, as one reviewer mentions.

These are fantastic. I have purchased 5 of them in 2 previous Woots. For 6 bucks they nicely cool your laptop or netbook without an external power source.

If I had one drawback, it would be that smaller netbooks have a tendency to slide to the bottom area of the cooler when put into the incline position. However this would not prevent me from purchasing these again. Some colors sold out quickly so jump on it if you have a preference.

Here is a link to the original Woot posts which analyzed the heck out of these things!

I have to ask... is this really worth it or any good?

I used to think that if your laptop was so hot that you needed a cooler, there's probably something wrong with your laptop thermally (not enough fans, bad tiny heat pipe)...

Then I bought a MacBook Pro with the discrete graphics... 120' F under my fingertips when gaming and hotter on the bottom. I prop it up with coasters (derp) and wonder if $6+5 for this would make a difference.

Got one on a previous Woot for my wife. She only has one USB port on her laptop which she uses for her hard drive. So now it sits in a drawer and gathers dust. But at least it's cool in there!

vote-for3vote-against

been thinking about one of these for a while, in for 2.

vote-for6vote-against

I picked 3 of these up last time they were offered, so far I am very pleased. I use it daily with the stand flipped out to maximize airflow (when it is flat the fan seems higher pitched like it is struggling a little bit) to my laptop. The breeze that flows out from under both sides of my laptop is definitely significant and pretty cool too. I notice with this running the internal laptop fan doesn't come on nearly as much. For this price it is worth the peace of mind, and for those of you bed and couch surfers, your lap will thank you. I am thinking about picking up 3 more for gifts! For reference, my laptop is a Gateway CX200X.
If anyone is on the fence about this, you can't really go wrong at this price. Think about all the hot spots under your laptop: hard drive, cpu, gpu, in some cases even wireless adaptors get a little toasty. The air from this hits at the center and spreads out, so it should reach almost everywhere. Buy this cooling pad, you won't regret it.

It's nice to come in here and get an idea of what to actually expect from a product. I really appreciate all of the feedback everyone gives to aid in my purchase. So why in the world would someone come in here just to troll and criticize others?

I got a Belkin brand one that looks exactly like these for I think $20 a year or two ago. It's a cooler, not especially quiet and not especially loud. If you need one $10 is a good deal. If this is exactly like my Belkin it's too bad they don't show the bottom, there's a nifty indentation where the cable stores when not in use.

In for 2. My laptop gets VERY hot (e.g. hot enough to cook bacon on the hard drive (yes, I frequently remove the hard drive); it's an old monster that weighs 12 pounds and has little air flow-through. After a long session, even the screen gets hot. It's big enough that I'm getting 2 pads just because 11" won't be anywhere near wide enough... and I might put one on top of the comp and one below when I'm done using it to get it cooled down faster. Hopefully will help keep it from falling apart for another few months. :D

In for one for my lil netbook, it's frying my legs.
They are out of Black and Blue already so I got Veruca Salt blueberry one.

dear woot mods: stop deleting my comments...this makes 2 days in a row.

@gnomercy: The heat must be getting to me ... I meant Violet Beauregarde Blueberry.

Carry on.

a bit small at 11.4 x 11.4. Maybe adequate for netbooks, but what about big widescreen laptops? I would think they would teeter totter on the cooler...just saying :)

vote-for4vote-against

I am using it right now and it is fine for a 15.6" laptop. My laptop's fan has a high-pitched whine and I have not heard it once since using this. Awesome buy!

For a long time I suffered from RJS. Now thanks to purchasing the MS Notebook Cooling Base from Woot I can work with my laptop where it belongs, in my lap. It's tragic that not more people are aware of the tragedies of Roasted Jewel Syndrome.

vote-for3vote-against

My husband has been complaining how hot he gets when he uses his laptop - in for one.

vote-for4vote-against

@dilcue I would invest in a cooling pad for your macbook! I got this one as well, and it seems to help a bit for sure! I use to work in laptop repair and i have seen way too many 'gaming laptops' in the shop for bad GPUs due to heat and such. Laptop just aren't really made for long gaming....

Got three of these last time... am in for 3 more today. My sisters will like the red ones. My nephew will appreciate the blue.

Question: how come woot! limits you to three units max?

vote-for2vote-against

First time I've ever bought multiple on a woot deal. In for 2!

vote-for2vote-against

In many situations placing a laptop on your lap obstructs many of the air inputs on the bottom of the laptop. The fan can't do its job if it can't pull air through the bottom vents. This will keep the vents from being sealed off by your clothing. For many situations, you probably won't need to plug in the fan, thus saving some battery capacity for better uses.

In for 3.

vote-for2vote-against

My notebook is 9 x 14 so is this unit too small to do it any good?

vote-for3vote-against

Picked this up last time and enjoy it a lot! Well worth the price -- especially if Jumbo sent you a $5 coupon!

vote-for2vote-against

@douginaz: Precisely. The biggest benefit is just keeping the bottom propped up to allow for adequate airflow. I wouldn't bother with the USB fan unless your laptop runs excessively hot. I work in a computer repair shop and frequently encounter heat related issues in laptops. We have always recommended propping up the back of the laptop. These stands make it easier and also safe to use a laptop on your lap, bed, couch, etc.

vote-for2vote-against

I got one the last time it was on the main site, too. It's great. Perfectly adequate fan power/air flow, pretty quiet, the curved design allows many positioning options. The stand makes this better than most. For this price, it is excellent & lots better than the last one I had, which I hated cuz it worked poorly & was loud & bullky for lots more $$.

My notebook is a 15.6 in & it fits nice. It might be a little bit wobbly on a real large laptop. Would be excellent with a little netbook. My only complaint is that it takes up a USB port without a repeater, but that's kind of expected.

If you're considering this - go in for a few - think gifts.

vote-for0vote-against

I bought 3 of the last time. Currently not using any of them. While im sure they work well if your laptop is on a table. When on your lap(or belly if lying down) the one underpowered fan has its only output blocked and it really wont do much. The design is also pretty uncomfortable to be used like that.

vote-for1vote-against

The fan may not be entirely necessary. Though I suppose for the newer fancier hotter ones it might. Cooking bacon on your hard drive? I suspect that would void your warranty. Mostly just having a flat surface area under the laptop so its built in fan can do its job is often enough. My Dell 830 has the fan in the upper right corner so when using it in bed or similar situations I just make sure to position that corner in the clear of legs, bed clothes, etc. The one thing you really need though is a pullout shelf for your mouse. Some of the Logitech's have that feature.

One downside about this product is it cannot be plugged into the Acer while it boots. It locks up the laptop until it's unplugged.

I don't know if this happens with other makes.

vote-for3vote-against

Perfect fit for Playstation 3!!! These are great... I bought 3 last time, and it was the best money spent. One is sitting perfectly underneath our Playstation 3, which used to get really HOT. Since we keep this plugged into one of the front PS3 USBs, the fan turns on when the Playstation turns on. The other 2 will be gifts for mom and daughter for their netbooks. If you have a Playstation 3, you have got to get one!

vote-for2vote-against

@dilcue: I've been using this with a Macbook Pro and it definitely makes the bottom a lot cooler! Even using this as a stand without the fan seems to help. It does seem a little awkward with how the back vents for the MBP are placed and where it rests on the stand, but I have a Late 2007 15.4" model and the newer ones or different sizes might sit a little differently.

It's also great with the little netbook I've been borrowing too. The stand keeps the netbook's fans from kicking into high gear so much and places the keyboard at a more comfortable angle to type.

I'd say it's completely worth the small investment.

The colors in the picture seem close to the real thing too. :-)

I have used these and they WILL extend the life of your laptop. My laptop I am using now is 4 years old (I use it every day to teach college classes) and I have not had one problem. All the other instructors have had problems with theirs and were told it was because of heat build-up. They now have no problems because I talked them into using these pads.

Purchased one of these for my wife's laptop last time that they were here. She loved the color (purple) and I have to admit, I was expecting something that would be rather cheap...considering the price. Got a lot more than expected. This is a great deal and works great. The one draw back is that it takes up a USB port and doesn't provide an additional plug. Other than that, this is one sweet Woot!

vote-for3vote-against

I bought two of these last time, one for myself & one for my wife, and these work great. She has a 17.5" laptop and I've got a 15.5" one, so it handles larger sizes quite well. I have mine tilted up because I like the typing angle while my wife uses hers flat. Before, we were using cooling racks, the kind for cooling off freshly baked cookies, to help with the ventilation. Now the cooling racks are back in the kitchen.

These are mandatory equipment at our house. The kids don't seem to notice how hot their laptops get when they use them snuggled up in bed so laptop coolers are required and these work well. I have an old Mac PowerBook, daughter 1 has a Acer netbook and daughter 2 has a HP pavilion laptop and they all fit well on the pads. This was a great deal!

vote-for2vote-against

@jrayhill: totally agree with that statement. I too picked these up last time they where up for sale and now I have a piece of mind knowing that my fat PS3 is nice and cool. Well worth it.

vote-for2vote-against

In for 1. Been looking to buy a new laptop, and I'm looking for an i7, so I'll need some nice cooling. Hope this holds up!

vote-for2vote-against

Got one using my last JumboWoot Coupon! Should be great for the hot A/C less summer

@kenlane: "it cannot be plugged into the Acer while it boots. It locks up the laptop until it's unplugged."

You might need to go into the BIOS Setup and change the boot sequence so that 'boot from cooling fan' comes after hard drive.

vote-for3vote-against

Kinda have to wonder why they made it square when every laptop on the planet is rectangular...

vote-for2vote-against

Bought 2 of these last time on Woot. They work great. My netbook and laptop used to run very hot on the bottom, and these really cooled them down. You will lose a USB slot to power this device, and the cord isn't very long if you have some awkwardly placed USB slots...but out of the several notebook coolers I've used in the past - this is by far the easiest, coolest looking, and overall best option I've seen. Plus, you can't beat the price

vote-for2vote-against

Picked one up for my laptop last time, for 6 bux couldn't really complain. Although, I did wish the USB chord had a way to be longer so I can at least plug it into the wall but does not really matter, I usually have open usb ports. Even though it doesn't seem to make much of a difference it's comfortable enough to keep on my lap instead of my oversized 17 inch laptop. lol.

vote-for2vote-against

Got 1 the last time on Woot. They are quite nice for the money. In for 2, they make a nice way to elevate the monitor on a laptop that has an external keyboard and I could use one for my work computer. The fan is noticebly louder than most computer fans, but it seems to work pretty well.

vote-for2vote-against

I bought the Belkin awhile ago, it died after about 3 months. I hope this one is as good as folks are saying...

vote-for2vote-against

In for 3 on this account! Now I'll go to hubby's!

vote-for1vote-against

@whtthfgg: I disagree - I think this is Perfect for use on your lap or the floor or a bed or whatever. Use the little kickstand-thing to prop it up a little more & increase airflow. Much better than without using any fan.

vote-for1vote-against

In for one - Jumbowoot made the decision easier.
