Hm, $146 for this, or $200 for the Kindle Fire.
Yes yes, before you slam the Fire, I would rather pay the extra $50 and get it than the much smaller in comparison iPod touch

vote-for5vote-against

I'm sick of Verizon I'm thinking about going back to dumb phone. Will this device satisfy my smartphone apps? And is it a good deal?

vote-for7vote-against

@oggusfoo. It can do everything an iPhone can other than make calls (but you can get an app for that too), but only has Wifi so if you want to use apps when away from home that require internet, you're gonna have to find a hotspot.

Also, its probably one of the better deals you can find on an iPod touch right now. If you wanted to risk getting it used rather than refurbished you could get a better price.

EDIT: Didn't know about what happened last time. Also add @justcepie 's comment into consideration as well.

vote-for33vote-against

From an earlier Woot! last month, these arrived and MANY people had problems with them. They're most likely from the same batch because they didn't sell out last time.

Avoid these. Many people were complaining about theirs not even starting, screens cracked or coming off, and they weren't even Apple refurbs, they were some 'refreshed' ones.

Here's a link to that incident. http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4927172

vote-for0vote-against

@justicepie: I have fait that Woot has corrected those errors and has made an honest effort to avoid a repeat of that debacle. I'd feel safe ordering one from Woot and even paying this price. Mine hasn't given me a lick of problems in the 9 months that I've had it.

vote-for5vote-against

@justicepie: Yow. That's horrid. How Woot! has fallen. :( And here I was thinking of getting one to use wifi-tethered to my Android phone so I could have access to both worlds.

vote-for8vote-against

@capguncowboy: With the litany of recent Woot! debacles (comment-deletion, better-deal-deletion, shirt-sizing, shirt-origin-mixup, etc...) that've been going on, I think it may be time to put your faith on hold. @justicepie's logic holds that it's probably the same batch, and there have clearly been some serious issues with those.

vote-for10vote-against

I was gona get one of these then i read the stories from last go around scarry..
also
I agree w/ above Ive been wooting a long time but less and less lately due some of the thngs mentioned above comment deletion, Issues with products (although the cst service staff have always been really good about making it right) But the main thing is the deals just dont seem to be like they used to be.. Too many Vacation or flight deals or the other stuff you see consistently being down voted into oblivion then appearing again on deals.woot the next week with same response.Bring back the wierd and tech items.

vote-for4vote-against

@luvche21: It's partly whether you want a larger screen versus pocket-sized. But also, the iPod touch also has 2 cameras, microphone and accelerometer (which has a few uses beyond screen auto-rotate).

There are also a few 7" tablets (although not all of good quality) for around the same price.

vote-for3vote-against

@psaux: I would also like to point out that I'm unable to change my vote from up to down.

vote-for5vote-against

Ive noticed a few times that Apple product refurbs from Woot have had more problems than usual. Apple had one of the best refurb programs ever, new outside skins an the same warrantee as a new product. Thats hard to beat.

vote-for21vote-against

@capguncowboy: Hate to break it to ya, but it seems they're the same ones.

woot's excuse for the last batch:

"As noted on the sale page, these were refurbished iPods, not Apple Recertified. "

this batch:

CONDITION:
Refurbished

vote-for6vote-against

You can get a Dell Streak 7 16gb for 200, same with Kindle Fire. If you want a larger screen that is. I can see the advantage of having a ipod touch since it doesn't have that "im a phone" priority its gotta run the apps a lot better and save battery.

I was considering a ipod touch as a secondary device so I don't wear down my android phone's battery and since I can't sneak a 7" screen into work this seems like a better deal only because of conceal-ability...

vote-for3vote-against

I'm getting one, and crossing my fingers it's a good one. But I noticed they very carefully cropped the rear picture to hide the face they don't have the apple on the back of it.

vote-for4vote-against

PLEASE, what happened to all the old REAL FIND items that were often sold here in the past, e.g., I'm looking for another DVD recorder, of which I bought SEVERAL from you in the past, like Motorola, etc., free-standing units, and ALL significantly less than $50?

vote-for-7vote-against

@alfredenigma: There under warrnty from Apple. Someone I know had a problem and they gave him a new one

vote-for3vote-against

@juliown1028 said,"It can do everything an iPhone can other than make calls (but you can get an app for that too)"

Have you successfully made this work? I've seen tons of posts all over the internet claiming this, but have yet to find success. My kids ask for this at least twice a month. :(

Also, this deal in general is just kind of meh. You could get them new for $5 more last year from Thanksgiving til the end of the year. I anticipate that to repeat, or improve this year.

vote-for9vote-against

Why not just spend $25 more and get one direct from Apple? They are $169 on their site, and you get the 1-year warranty and free shipping.

vote-for9vote-against

Not Apple refurbished. Be careful!!

vote-for-1vote-against

I'm waiting for a better camera. I don't want to have to carry a phone, ipod, and a camera when I go out. I can deal with 2 devices, but three gets redundant! The .7 megapixel on the ipod touch is useless. You get better megapixels on a $20.00 digital camera! Apple really fooled the people with this one. Camera megapixels should be at least 5.0 to be of any use. Having an fm and free digital tv receiver in the unit wouldn't have added much cost either. Shameful waste! PEOPLE! TELL APPLE WHAT YOU WANT AND MAYBE THEY'LL MAKE IT!

vote-for4vote-against

@oggusfoo: Don't do it unless you own a Mac, these things SUCK if you are a PC household

vote-for2vote-against

I got one last month. Works fine and not a scratch on it.

vote-for7vote-against

Available refurbished from the apple store (store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/ipod) for $169. Apple's refurbishment process is excellent and they stand by it with a 1 year warranty. The warranty on the woot units is a "90 Day Woot Limited Warranty". Spend the extra $20 rather than taking the chance.

vote-for2vote-against

Tired of paying the $30 a month for the data on my cell phone. Getting this since my city has free wifi throughout. I'm usually looking up websites while in restaurants with free wifi. This will pay for itself in 5 months. Thanks Woot!

vote-for3vote-against

I got the 32gb on here same day the 8gb was on Woot and it worked perfectly until Sunday. Now it won't even turn on and it's fully charged. I dunno what to do with it.

vote-for16vote-against

Here's the better irony - get the Square trade warranty (22.99) and PAY MORE for a NOT APPLE REFURBISHED iPod,than you would getting it from Apple basically as new, with 1 Year Apple warranty.

(sarcasm) Yea, really great deal on sellout.woot (/sarcasm) At $99 this would be a deal, if and only if woot would clarify what Refurbished means and who is doing the refurbishing.

Or for $139 you can go to the cow that got blown up and buy one with an honest description of any faults or defects. free shipping at the booming cow place too btw.

vote-for1vote-against

They may get the items from more than one refurbisher. I got one from a Woot and 3/10 and mine was fine -- authentic Apple back, no cosmetic issues, etc. The discussion for that one doesn't show all the complaints the later one had. http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4900664

I agree that with the authentic Apple recertified one now so cheap, it doesn't make much sense to get this one.

vote-for3vote-against

@212041588: These are not under warranty from Apple.

vote-for3vote-against

@rmsalt, I have an ipod touch 32gig 3rd gen (not current) and a dumb phone. seeing as I have wifi at home and at work, i've been able to get by remarkably well with these two devices. very rarely do i feel the need to check my email while driving (for more reasons than one). occasionally it is inconvenient in that i can't look up things while out, but many places have free wifi (McDonald's, as an example), which you can generally find if you need it. The dumb phone is 20$ a month... so I definitely find it workable if you can have just a little patience

vote-for1vote-against

@212041588: check again it says woot 90 day not apple 90 day

vote-for1vote-against

@oggusfoo: biggest draw back for using touch instead of an android smartphone is lack of GPS. That's the only thing that would hold me back from returning to my LG Chocolate as my phone and using an iTouch as my 'smart' device.

vote-for1vote-against

FWIW, I got a 32gb refurbed iTouch in April of 2010 and it was not only perfect it even came w/ the Apple microphone headphones. (and I had just spent $35 for a pair a few weeks earlier.)

vote-for7vote-against

@psaux: We have confirmed that this is not the same batch/supplier as the sale referred to above.

All told.

vote-for2vote-against

@jumbowoot:

It would be helpful to detail what refurbished means for these units. What can be expected when one opens the box?

vote-for1vote-against

You can get GPS on the iTouch with several different GPS units, magellan, dual and other make them. Also if you do jailbreak there is a bluetooth stack and you can use pretty much any cheap BT gps unit and pair it up.

Search the inter webs for touch gps receiver

vote-for0vote-against

I had a second gen ipod touch that i resold for $110 a while back and i have been meaning to get one ever since because all that i sank into apps but i don't like how sketchy the reviews are and in essence it is a bit overpriced for the fuctions but that's apple for ya.

vote-for1vote-against

@outdoorslife: It's pretty simple on woot! to tell what you're getting. But you do have to pay attention. Simply look for this line in the description:

Warranty: 90 Day Woot Limited Warranty

That means it is not Apple refurbished, which would carry a 1 year Apple warranty. This method can be applied to other products, not just Apple.

If you are shopping refurbs online, it's time to stop whining and learn how to shop for them.

vote-for1vote-against

@jackseric: Have you tried the Skype app with WiFi? That's how I use my iPhone (in airplane mode) to make calls when overseas. Works like a charm. Calls to other Skype accounts are free or you can buy "Skype credit" in $10 chunks and call any US number.

vote-for2vote-against

@spiky:

The definition for refurbished is : To make clean, bright, or fresh again; renovate.
With that expectation the product will:
1) Have a battery that is 90% + better or new
2) Not have gouges or scratches
3) Not have random software loaded on it, rather have manufacturer original software
4) come with all accessories

Anything else would be USED. Not whining, its called being an informed consumer. If this was actually refurbished professionally (like by apple) it would be a good deal. I doubt these are actually refurbished vs "being checked to work and cleaned with a terry cloth".
If you can accept paying a premium for a used item thats okay, its your choice.

vote-for2vote-against

augh! how do I cancel my order?!

vote-for1vote-against

@capguncowboy: Oh I'm not commenting on Woot!s choice, but this last one definitely wasn't without some major issues and I'm just throwing out that this could likely be from the same vendor.

I failed to mention that the cable that came in mine, wouldn't even charge. It would sync but had to be from a different generation, but Woot! immediately sent me a working one, free of charge. Other people were experiencing the same thing. The headphones aren't even Apple, the box it came in was really sketchy and the quick guide in my order, and several others, was missing.

If Woot! claims it's an Apple refurb, then by all means jump on that ship. But if they can't claim an Apple refurb, just avoid. Mine ultimately cost me more than buying a brand spanking new 8g from the Apple store itself. I wasn't happy and just wanted to warn people of this particular product.

vote-for1vote-against

@212041588: I don't think that's true. Apple warranty covers manufacturers defects, but maybe only/if the previous owner purchase the Apple Care coverage and it hasn't expired from the previous owner. Other than that, these are coming over with NO Apple symbol on the back, so it's a COMPLETELY different case. Who's to say whether or not the battery has even been replaced or if it's not even some GOOD Apple knock-off.

I'm just saying, this probably isn't the Woot! you're looking for.

Those droids are though.

vote-for1vote-against

I haven't gotten two, both have been great. Not one problem.

vote-for5vote-against

@justicepie: I have just confirmed again with our staff here.

This is a different batch/supplier than the sale you are referring to. The cases have NOT been replaced on these items. They will have the original cases.

vote-for1vote-against

I got mine last month, and was disappointed that it came in a generic box that said "refreshed" on it, plus there was nothing on the back side of the iPod to indicate that it is an Apple product - like the apple logo or even iPod. I was going to send it back and get an android (like the Samsung Galaxy Player for $220 from newegg), but I decided to give the iPod a try. After painstakingly moving all my music and pictures thru iTunes to the iPod, and then downloading some apps and games, I became more satisfied and glad I kept it. The iPod works flawlessly, the music player is awesome, gameplay is amazing, the web browser (on wi-fi) is smooth and fast. Battery life is relatively decent. Dual cameras work great (for FaceTime or Skype)... However I am sadly disappointed in the LOW RES front camera (come on, Apple, really??) even my cheap pantech phone has a better camera. But, with that issue aside, I am happy with my "refreshed" iPod Touch. Just glad I didn't spend $200 on it. Thanks Woot

vote-for1vote-against

Oh yeah, as as others have said, there was no quick start guide, and the charging cable and headphones are junk. I'm glad I didn't buy this as a gift!

vote-for1vote-against

@jumbowoot: Oh, sorry jumbo, didn't realized you had checked earlier.
