that's the funniest sprinkler i've ever seen - that isn't for kids to play in

I forgot to say that the coolest thing is that it doesn't have to go in a straight line. It can't make sharp turns, but it can follow a curve. I'm thinking about buying one for that week or so before the irrigation water turns on, and the rains have stopped. Okay, I'm thinking about buying one because I want it.

@w00tgurl: Just saw your comment. Kids can still play in it. It moves very slowly.

My dad has one of these! It's so nice because he can start it going then leave it for ever and it keeps moving instead of soaking one part of your lawn and leaving the rest thirsty still. Except when it gets to the end of course...but at least then the rest of the lawn had a drink too.

@shrdlu: Maybe I should finally get one. How much are these regularly?

My dad did say that the weight of this one was key: it keep it "on track" of the hose, whereas he others get lost and can fall off track or can't keep pulling the hose.

@shrdlu: You want to be careful with having your kids play with this thing. Being made of cast iron, it really hurts if they step/trip on it. It also does not spray very high which is good for watering, but bad for playing.

lol. i guess i should clarify... i've seen some funny looking sprinklers as kids toy sprinklers, like rotating elephant trunks. this is the funniest non-toy sprinkler i've seen.

although.. perhaps one day if i notice my kids need to toughen up then i'd let them play with this cast iron danger toy. i suspect the neighborhood patrol would report me but the kids will thank me when they're tough winners in the future

I bought one of these a long time ago (like 15 years) for like $10. Haha, but it weighs about 40 pounds because its solid iron. It's great, and never stops working. Just lay out the hose and let it run, it works great. That is until you realize you only have a 10 ft hose and you have to go buy one of those too

The wheels look plastic and rumor has it that the guts are made of plastic, too :( My parents had one (and maybe they still do) that had iron wheels and metal internals. If it's still around, it probably still works.

This seems like a pretty high price for a plastic piece. These are neat, though. I always loved it. I wonder if I can come up with an excuse to get it out and hook it up before the summer's over :)

@irongobbo: $10?! Where? Is there anther hidden good source?

If you add in a hose timer this things are almost as good as having a sprinkler system. You do need to remember to reset it every day you want to water, but you can cover a huge lawn pretty easily.

I do suggest trying to find the ones with the cast iron wheels though.

This thing works great.
Everyone that is concerned with the wheels do not worry, I own one of these and this thing is made of great material and built to last. If you want a sprinkler for your large lawn and don't want to keep moving it or invest in an expensive in-ground system this is the way to go.

@dvldogg05: how well does it do with rough terrain? We have spots in the lawn that have the roots from pine trees popping up.

@w00tgurl: These things move VERY VERY slowly... kids can play in them fine.

@lavikinga: My brother says tree roots and such are no problem, and that it's tried to crawl a fence a couple of times (whatever that means).

@wrek: that's too bad. i want something that would make my kids run in horror when they see this sprinting at them from across the yard

@lavikinga @shrdlu: I saw some customer-submitted images on the Amazon page where the owner fashioned some cat-track-type add-ons for the wheels because it has a bit of difficulty getting through freshly tilled garden soil.

I wonder if they've posted a how-to for that project somewhere.

Although my parents' yard is hilly with roots and such, and my dad hasn't had any issues with it getting stuck in one place.

@shrdlu: I've only ever had problem with these things in two situation. The first was when I tried to have it go over freshly tilled ground in my garden. The wheels couldn't find traction in the soft dirt. the other was when my parent used it to water the edge of a half acre yard. They would set up 100 feet of hose and start the sprinkler up. through the course of the day, it would water the entire edge, but you had to remember to pull up some of the hose about mid-day, or the weight was too much for it.

Also, make sure you keep an eye on it if you try to have it make a sharp corner. If if jumps the hose it will have not problems going out into the street and attracting the attention of all of your neighbors.
