my question is, can i basically do the same thing appletv does by connecting my macbook pro to a tv with a dvi-to-hdmi cable?

vote-for2vote-against

@icarususa: Yes, but where would the sound come from? DVI carries a picture, but no audio.

vote-for2vote-against

Yay for HDMI only. Guess I'll wheel my 1080i 56-incher out into the street to rot and go buy any new flat panel so I can use this overpriced apple service!

It's a cool idea, and possibly a useful product, but I can't see spending a buck to watch a half hour show within a 48-hour time frame. It might be a viable idea if I didn't pay for cable, and only watched a few shows a week...after all, Comcast is ishy quality and way too expensive. I would hate to miss live events, like football games, though.

I have an Apple TV & a Time Machine. I have recently been ripping all my DVDs to I Tunes and then putting them on my Time Machine, which I can then access through my Apple TV. It's a slow process ripping them, but when I am done I will be able to access my whole 400+ library with a click of a button, in addition to anywhere in the world through my Time Machine

Great deal!

Mac compatible?

vote-for6vote-against

Virto...how dare you doubt the jobs...if he says buy a new TV you buy a new tv! damn some people don't get it(major sarcasm applies!) how does this apply as a WOOT? 99 dollars is its normal selling price?

vote-for9vote-against

@icarususa: save the apple headace and buy a ROKU box
http://www.roku.com/

vote-for14vote-against

This is a website for DEALS. How is this by any means a deal, when it is the original regular price?

vote-for3vote-against

Apparently every Apple announcement today is a deal. I don't get it either. So just in case I missed the coverage of every news source this evening I know I can stay up-to-date via deals.woot.

P.S. None of the new stuff is available yet either. Nothing ships until next week at the earliest. The AppleTV just says "September".

vote-for2vote-against

A friend of mine had this for about a week before trying to sell it to me. It didn't have enough processing power to play full 1080p video files (I think it was the video card that couldn't handle it). Get a $200 settop computer instead (was his advice). He seems to know what he is talking about...

vote-for3vote-against

@benyust2: Excuse me? Your friend had this a week?

vote-for1vote-against

I'm pretty sure it is a deal considering you can't buy it anywhere else for cheaper...

vote-for2vote-against

Thinking maybe the one his 'friend' had for a week was the OLD style apple tv, not the new, superwhamadyneohmygawdigottahaveitnowcuzstevejobssaysso one that that they came out with today.

vote-for2vote-against

@thefenst: that's not always true. some forms of DVI can carry audio.

vote-for1vote-against

Don't I need broadband to use this? Jobs is going to have to provide a way to get internet before he can expect anyone to buy something like this.

vote-for1vote-against

@sizzlestick: Technically, you can't even buy it from Apple yet. Just pre-order. When they are finally released and Amazon gets them, I bet you could save the sales tax (depending on your state) and probably still get the free shipping. Although MSRP is never a deal in my book.

vote-for9vote-against

I would say these non-sale Apple advertising plugs put up by the Apple fanboys are the worse misuse of deals.woot.com, but the semi-nude women in the soft porn non-sale outfits that show up in groups of two or three every night still rank as the worse!

vote-for1vote-against

More and better stuff coming. apple is still trying to figure this out. "Renting" a tv show for a buck sounds good, unless you watch a 100 shows a month. And 4.99 a movie,....naw, I'll stick with redbox and netflix.

vote-for1vote-against

next macfag that posts an apple "deal" gets to be straight. ready...GO!!

vote-for2vote-against

Any idea if this will still be able to run XBMC?

vote-for2vote-against

@sizzlestick: If it cost $5,000 but you couldn't buy it from anywhere else for cheaper, would it still be a deal??

This thing is not at all "big" on entertainment in terms of quality, just breadth of selection. It only has:

"H.264 video up to 720p"
"MPEG-4 video up to 640 by 480 pixels"
"M-JPEG up 1280 by 720 pixels" (Again only 720p)

So you can get HD but it's the "smallest" of them all. Pass!

vote-for1vote-against

@stevec5000: It has built in 802.11 N wireless... as well as a port for ethernet lol

vote-for1vote-against

@scutter:

That's pretty bad. I'd assume that since it hasn't been released yet that it would be 1080p capable. But that's Apple for you.

If anyone wants a media player, just get the WDTV Live: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136472&cm_re=wdtv_live-_-22-136-472-_-Product

It's currently on sale for $89.99.

It plays upto 1080p, including MKV's.

Edit: It's also on sale on their website, if it comes back in stock for $59.99: http://store.westerndigital.com/store/wdus/en_US/DisplayAccesoryProductDetailsPage/productID.212641300/categoryID.13096400/parid.13092700/catid.13096400

vote-for4vote-against

Roku box does all of what this does and more. You can get 99 cent PURCHASES instead of rentals also... Boom.

vote-for2vote-against

This isn't a 'deal' and it should be taken down. This is the normal price.

vote-for1vote-against

@benyust2: If you read the specs the max resolution it can handle is 720p.
I'd totally get one if it could play more formats and didn't require iTunes to access networked files.

vote-for2vote-against

@jeremytheindian: Unfortunately the Roku box will not play local files. Only streaming. I was close to getting one until I noticed this serious flaw. I'm holding out for the Boxee Box.

vote-for1vote-against

@billfrugge: Maybe it was the old version but yes, he did and immediately sold it because it sucked.

vote-for1vote-against

Boxee has helped make AppleTVs last much longer than they really should have, given the specs. If any of you pick one of these up, I'd highly recommend putting it on.

vote-for1vote-against

@thefenst: you connect audio through the headset input on the mac to the one on the tv...i do it all the time.

vote-for1vote-against

@mesiaman: can i do this with my mac mini with external hard drive? what software do you use to rip the DVD's?

vote-for1vote-against

Guys. You're preaching to the choir. Use the "tattle" link.

vote-for1vote-against

So, does this just play stuff from your computer or the Internet? No, broadcast TV, cable or satellite?

vote-for1vote-against

@chenvej: That is correct. There is no storage or tuner inside the device at all. Everything is streamed from somewhere else. At least they added Netflix streaming. But I already own 3 devices that do that on my TV.

vote-for1vote-against

Why is this recommendation here on deals.woot? Full price is not a Deal. This sort of submission is contrary to the purpose of this community driven resource for locating products at greatly reduced prices. If submissions like this one become the norm, deals.woot will become just another advertising vehicle for manufactures and retailers.
