So it's a 2 pill sample, when it doesn't even start working for 3-4 pills over 3-4 days in many cases? Amazing!

@boredmaster: That's not how it works. You need to change your diet.

That IS how it works. Read the fine print. Full affects will not be achieved until 3-4 days into taking it daily. Prilosec is not an instant acid reducer.

I take two of these when I get home from a night out drinking. Two more when I get up in the morning. Great for hangovers...

Some people develop a weakness of their duodenal sphincter. It just can't hold back acid reflux any longer. Many are not fat and a change of diet won't solve the problem (though it may help to some degree). If they don't take Prilosec, Pepcid, Tagamet, or another acid inhibitor regularly, they run the risk of serious esophageal damage and/or disease.

Esophageal cancer, for example, sort of spoils your whole day.

I agree that a two-pill sample is a little nuts, because (as noted) it takes a few days to have an effect.

@lmittell: Indeed, Prilosec OTC and Prilosec are both proton pump inhibitors (the same drug, omeprazole) that effectively reduce the acid in your stomach, not neutralize it. Therefore, it needs to be taken daily to keep up with the new proton pumps that are being expressed in the stomach.

Essentially, it keeps the stomach acid from being as acidic; it does not neutralize the existing acid like Tums (calcium carbonate).
