Since it isn't mentioned, these ARE the extended editions. This is the set for fans of LotR or sword-and-magic type fantasies. If you (or the person you're buying for) aren't huge fans of either though, you might prefer the normal-length movies. Those extra hours of movie aren't for everyone. Personally though, I could never go back to the theatrical releases.

Now, all that said, this is a good price, but Black Friday IS around the corner. There are many more sales to come and this isn't the cheapest I've seen this set. I think I've seen it as low as $35 in the past. This isn't a bad price, but with Black Friday and the Hobbit movie coming soon, it's hard to say what prices will do.

Blu-Ray isn't mentioned either. Okay, just in the tags.

No indication of Blu-ray in the headline, but at least the logo is visible at the top of the product image above.

This set comes with digital download codes (that are NOT HD, but should look fine on your phone), but technically they expired this summer. Not sure how they will work now.

I am still waiting to see if Walmart honors the "deal" that was up earlier this fall. They had the new version of the trilogy listed at $9.86. This set includes Hobbit movie bucks. I am pretty sure this was a pricing/ listing error but am hoping they honor the pre-orders they received. Now this is for the theater release not the extended versions. They are currently listed at $29.96. Anyone have any thoughts as to weather Walmart will honor the $9.86 price?

If you really want it I would buy at this price. It is no sure thing that this set will be lower on Black Friday or after. I think that $35 price last year was very fleeting. I know I could not get one at that price.

@mnmom2four: I just checked and my order is still in their system. Shows as shipping between 12/06-12/10

@gribber: I nabbed the $35 set at Wal-Mart. I've never seen such a good price since.

@gribber: Also, most of the Black Friday ads are out now, and there's nary a mention of this set.

i just joined all six discs of the extended version into one 10+ hour epic to watch on my kindle while hunting this weekend. i may not get a deer, but at least i'll stay awake this year.

Just FYI, this is a slightly different version of the original extended blu-ray release. The original had a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and this one is 1.77. That is the only difference I see. This newer version will fully fill your HDTV losing some content on the edges. The original will give you some black bars on the top and bottom, but you will see the entire picture as it was originally shot. The original is also on Amazon, but at almost double the price.

@homiejome: I am roughly 100% certain that is a typo.

I knew there was a reason why I held back on yesterday's Alien Anthology offer, and here it is.

@jackofallgames42: Is this the extended version or the Blu-ray extended version, because the listing states that the run time is 681 minutes and not the 726 minutes of the Blu-ray versions. Does anybody know what version is in this set?

@jeffyn: The title was modified after, and maybe because of, my comment. Thanks.

@mstg: Trust the seller. Amazon says it's the extended editions on Blu-Ray. They say 681 minutes. It's Amazon you'd be buying it from. If you get something other than what is described, Amazon is very good about making things right by their customers. I've had a lot of experience with Amazon and I've never had a problem with Amazon that they didn't fully resolve.
