In the last posting, Luke was kind enough to give away a few strait razors. I was lucky enough to get a hold of a free razor. I ordered a Shave Set from Luke the same day (Sunday, I believe) and received both items today (Friday).
This is my first strait razor, so honestly I can't comment too much on quality, I've had it for a day and don't know enough to make a judgment. I shaved today (no cuts! woo) and really enjoyed the opportunity. As a knife guy, I can say the blade looks good, it was sharp, the handle looks good, although the rivet is a little iffy.
Overall, in my little experience with this site, Luke honestly cares about his business and understands customer happiness. One little qualm I have is that shipping is added to each item, I would have probably ordered a few different items or ordered items separately but didn't want to pay shipping on each one.

Luke, I appreciate your commitment to your customers and I can guarantee I will be ordering from you again.

@dillonbarnes: Thanks and glad you like the razor. We are working with a new fulfillment process so new and free shipping is on its way.

What's the give away today Luke? I hope its an interesting requirement.

vote-for16vote-against

LOL... what's with the hate on this seller? every comment he makes people down-woot. Interesting. I looked up one of his previous deals, and people were actually down-wooting his comment that offered a disappointed client a new blade. so... by trying to provide customer service, he's down-wooted. Classy guys... If Jeff (my husband) hadn't already bought a brand new $200 Dovo razor for a Christmas gift to himself, i'd probably buy one of these and check it out. Luke, is the leather strop decent leather? I don't think Jeff has a good strop yet. Just a $15 cheapy that he already owned.

vote-for5vote-against

Well i bought one from this guy about a week or so ago and it got here yesterday. i have to say it dam sharp so be careful. Next the wood box it came in was broken but with some glue it can be fixed, just FYI >;-(... and the strap seems neat. I have not had a chance to use it yet. Trying to work up the guts for it. I will eventually and hope i do not kill my self with it. Overall i think its a cheap way of getting into a stright razor to see if it is worth pursuing. Why the hell does the dam thing scare me so goddam much?

vote-for15vote-against

Here's an observation I've seen from reading some of the previous posts on this website; I've seen a lot of hate by people, and very often, the comment is followed by "I'm a novice strait edge user." These are people buying the $40 strait razor, then complaining because they don't know how to use a strait razor. I say all this is a novice user myself, shaved with a strait edge for the first time today (see previous post).

I just don't believe you can rate a product as low quality when you don't know what you're doing. My first shave was rough, I felt a lot of pulling, I didn't get all my hair. However, 30 minutes later, I was getting better at it, my skill level improved and my cheap $40 razor was working fine.

Don't buy a Ford Focus and then complain that it doesn't do 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. I'm extremely happy I had a chance to enter the world of strait razors in a way that didn't break the bank. Maybe in time, as I improve, I'll upgrade to a better razor. Now, I'm happy.

vote-for5vote-against

@havokk: Be cautious with that blade =D. Glad you got the package and sorry to hear that the box was broken. I am happy to replace if your not able to get it fixed. Have a great night and thanks for the kind words.

Luke

@dillonbarnes: Shoot me an email if you have any questions. I can give you some really quick pointers that may help move the progress along as well.

Here is some good advice for just starting out: You will want to have a 30 degree angle or less (3 quarters from the spine to your skin) and light pressure at first. It will take some time to build up confidence. You will also want to make sure the area of the face your shaving you are pulling the skin tight. Start off with small sweeps and concentrate on keeping your hand steady and building your comfort and confidence. The practice razors can really help with that.

Luke

I doubt many of the actual product reviews will stick around on this post. [Wedit: Mod baiting removed]

I purchased the camel bone woot back in October and the blade was sharpened with a mechanical knife sharpener, not shave ready, pits along the blade and the stamp was removed from the razor. The deal advertised the blade as custom didn't mention anything about it being a buckingham and sons blade. Did research on the internet and went with the deal since it wasn't a blade with very negative reviews.

On a side note compared the heft and feel of the blade to another high carbon steel blade and the one I bought felt like it was very cheap. Like something that was made with low quality metal and was covered with another metal to cover it up.

vote-for6vote-against

I have bought a straight razor from VSR, it did take a bit longer than I had hoped to receive the blade. Just signed up for another blade and hope they have figured out the shipping process. I've been shaving for 12+ years and can dull a mach 3 in two weeks.
Some advice to those who buy a straight razor:
1. it's all in the angle and direction
2. it takes a while to 'toughen' up your skin so expect it to not feel great the first few times
3. once you learn how to use it, it will give you the closest shave you can get, a "3 day shave".
4. one razor just isn't enough.
5. once stropped, it is sharp as sh**. So be careful.

vote-for9vote-against

@superm0m1323: As far as I can tell he has always attempted to offer good service... But where to start eh?

He's flippantly dismissive and rude to anyone who doesn't believe his products are "good", and accuses them of being bad mouthing competitors.

He uses questionable URLs that can confuse customers.
"FeatherRazor.com" (Ala Feather Safety Razors of Japan) VintageStraightRazor.com (Ala vintagestraitrazors.com), and recently a 3rd domain...

Yet his domain for his custom brand of straights (gbbuckingham.com) is parked and unused.

At one point he was honing/stropping razors using a kitchen knife sharpener for a while. Blades were showing up with pronounced frowns.

$10 soap kits for $20 claiming a $40 value. $10 is about what you'd pay for the exact same product at Walgreens.

My own purchase from him came with the blade warped,(He did offer to replace it.) I use it for stropping practice

Reviews of their custom blades on sites like Badger & Blade are pretty damning.

vote-for5vote-against

@ravenc83: You shouldn't have to toughen up your skin in regards to straight razor shaves. They've always been the smoothest, nicest shaves I've ever received with the least skin irritation.

I can't dull a mach3 just by letting it see my stubble, but I can't actually use a Mach 3 without my neck breaking out in a nasty red bumpy rash. I moved to straights because I didn't have that problem.

vote-for4vote-against

@xavoc: I did offer to replace the blade you bought with one that was acceptable to you in fact I told you to send it back for a full refund. You let me know you would rather keep it.

So just to be Clear I have addressed you personally before and told you to contact me for a remedy if your blade had a an issue. I have also made it very clear to everyone that I will give a no questions asked money back return on any blade within 30 days and I will exchange/upgrade or sharpen any blade thereafter.

I disagree on the Questionable URL issue that is raised weekly. I do agree I can be to the point. I am nothing but helpful to any of my clients. However people that come here to flame me I am not going to be their pal. I do believe in telling trolls to take a hike.

My prices are better than the WalGreens here by 30%. Have you looked at my prices lately? VDH Premium Kit For $9.99!

@xavoc: You should also know that anyone who has bought from me in the past gets coupon codes for 10-20% off any store price on any item correct...

I get a ton of return customers for my GB Buckingham, Vintage, DOVO blades & accessories. I listen to the community and I am going to continue to build the number 1 place online for wet shaving. Do you remember telling me about Mardone burl... I do and I am having scales made up now for some of our many restorations. We buy hundreds of vintage razors every week. I have been buying up the vintage blades for some time now.

I have an entire facility now dedicated to restorations. There is a perfectly good reason I am building on the names I have www.VintageStraightRazor.com and www.StraightRazor.co they are synonymous with my business. Just be cause someone may have the .net .org .com or the plural does not mean anything those are generics they are categories...

vote-for7vote-against

@straightrazor: Yes, which I did already state along with saying you work hard to please your customers when they let you. In my case I chose to practice stropping so that I wouldn't foul up a better blade.

[Wedit: part about URLs - not related to deal at hand]

Actually, no I haven't. I haven't needed supplies lately. You've finally undercut Amazon.com by $.52 cents! (Not an easy task in most cases.)

I'm not trying to slander you Luke, someone asked why you get downvoted so often, I was simply explaining what complaints/concerns/poor reviews I've seen. I'm pretty sure that I've ALWAYS said you give good customer service, but at times your attitude towards people turns me off as a potential customer.

vote-for9vote-against

Alright guys I think it is safe to say this has gone a bit too far.

These listings are not designed for customers and merchants to tear each other apart, but rather to comment, respectfully, on the deal and merchant at hand.

From what I have seen Luke has done nothing but attempt to satisfy his customers, albeit he can be short. Regardless of that fact you really do not expect him to be protective of his business after receiving direct attacks?

Support the fledgling business and provide valid comments about the product and the business as a whole, not the individual.

I have not purchased from Luke's company as of yet, however I am destroying the fusion razors in 3 weeks (not the advertised 3 months) and it is getting expensive!!! I am looking to get into using a straight razor and may just have to bite at this opportunity.

vote-for9vote-against

People PLEASE do some research before buying a straight from any place, especially VSR's "Deals". The place to look is Straightrazorplace.com

Here's some useful info on this brand of razor in this deal http://straightrazorplace.com/razors/76033-so-i-tried-gb-buckingham-sons-razor.html and http://straightrazorplace.com/razors/76380-gb-buckingham-sons-razor-stress-test.html.

Someone new to shaving will not know what to look for. I'm sorry Luke, most of what I see on your sight is plain "overpriced".
I'm not a razor snob, but nothing good comes form a newb trying to use a crap razor and strop, or spending 2x retail for low end Vanderhogen soap/brush that they can buy an almost every pharmacy and big box store across the country.

vote-for6vote-against

I have purchased one and on my way to give gillette the finger. I went to my local store yesterday looking for cartridges and they were priced at 29.99 for the small case so I was pleased to find this deal at woot whom I have been a fun of sonce the 60's (not really). I read much of the crap written here, it almost sounds like politics. I do appreciate the fact that Luke wants to take care of his customers and as long as I am taken care of I don't care how he words it. I went ahead and got the 9.99 soap. I will be posting back on my first experience once kit is received.

thank you all for the laughs.
sincerely,
"El mucho macho"

vote-for6vote-against

From a masher to a slasher in one easy click! Thanks for the deal!

vote-for4vote-against

Also FWIW- to those thinking a cheap razor (at $50) is good to start- it is not. Get a GOOD razor to start and you'll have a much better "feel" for what you're doing and what it's supposed to feel like. A good usable vintage razor can be had for a lot less other places.

I will say if Luke stands behind his stuff that's great, but he's standing behind what appears to be crap razors.

Aside from custom knife makers, the only quality razor manufacturers in production today are Dovo and Thiers Issard.

vote-for2vote-against

I did a fair amount of research and Luke's prices and quality are competitive across the spectrum of products he offers. Add the customer service and personal responses (as you can see here)his company is becoming known for and you have the best combination of value and guarantees that you will find on the internet or locally. I plan to buy again for myself and as gifts.

vote-for6vote-against

What is the country of manufacture of the blade?

vote-for1vote-against

In for 1. Willing to give it a shot. Luke, stay strong. You take a bunch of crap and that you even respond to this people is a credit to you. Look forward to doing business with you.

vote-for8vote-against

Pffffttttt. People are still falling for these deals? Really? After all the negative reviews from people who actually tried their product and found them to be horribly sub-par? Yes some of those forums are snobby, but most of these downvotes on luke's products are from Woot customers who tried them and hated them. Personally, I bought one and felt ripped off. I paid around 70 to 80 bucks on their gb buckingham pakka wood blade which came with the premium shave set (the 9.99 one). The blade is unusable. I know I won't get a quality blade from him judging by just the horrible metal quality itself, so I don't care to spend money and time getting him to replace it. I don't really care for the refund either for similar reasons and because I like and use the premium set. It's not that the blades can't get sharp, they don't stay sharp. After properly stropping and honing the blade (since it didn't come shave ready) it dulled after one pass. One. Pass. Not even half a cheek shaved.

vote-for6vote-against

I'm sorry, but I feel like every time Luke puts a deal on here he just gets mauled by trolls.

The bottom line is this: if you want a cheap straight razor you will get just that. If you are willing to invest some extra money into it, you will get something that you will be able to use for years.

Some people are complaining about prices, but have you ever tried to have Walgreens/Walmart/a seller on Amazon hone your razor or swap out the scales that you purchased from them? You most likely wont even get a response (obviously does not apply to everyone that sells on Amazon, so I'm sorry to generalize).

I'm more than willing to spend a little extra on a good product if the customer support is there. I feel as though Luke is proud of his company and is willing to put up with weekly complaints for the deals that he puts up here. I fully support this business and am happy to see that there are still individuals that care about the customer.

I say cheers to you sir.

Luke, did you decide not to give away more razors? I know last week you gave several away and you said you would do a giveaway with every subsequent deal.

'I will get creative and do a give away each time I run a WOOT. How does that sound?

Regards,
Luke'

I'm a skeptic, but I can be swayed by a good experience. Send me a kit and I'll try it out. If it's quality, I'll say so, I'm not affraid to admit when I'm too harsh.

vote-for4vote-against

I'm trying to stay out of the "who can fling the most crap" comments and ask a (probably dumb) question. I have a beard, but I still keep my cheeks and neck smooth. Is this (or any straight blade, for that matter) accurate enough, or maneuverable enough, or whatever the word is I'm looking for enough to trim around the edges of my beard? I don't want to take all the hair off, because then I rock the little boy face and have trouble getting people to take me seriously. Thanks!

vote-for6vote-against

@smirltastic: You won't be able to find anything that will give you a straighter edge of your beard than a good straight razor. It will be tricky under your chin, but you can get the hang of it with practice.

vote-for2vote-against

@smirltastic: Stupimlico comment above is 100% correct. I am able to edge my beard or goat with perfection with my straight razors. The lines are honestly perfect.

Great questions and thanks.

What happened to the score prediction giveaway? It seems Lukes original post and all the predictions after have been deleted with no reason. My bet, one of the Luke "haters" whined to woot that the giveaway was to close to gambling so woot yanked it.

Whatever, I still think the guy is a class act when he responds to every customer complaint on a public forum. Keep up the good work and don't pay attention to the few people you cannot appease no matter how hard you try.

I bought a razor when the last sale came up a couple weeks ago. I don't think its sharp enough though. I tested it on my arm hair and it really didn't cut but a few hairs and thats after several passes and more than a little pressure.

The leather strop seems to be a good quality though.

vote-for2vote-against

Luke has still yet to respond to what country the GB blades are from...when I asked before in 2 separate posts the best answer I got was they were made for him... Dovo is Germany, Thiers is France.
Anything of steel from Pakistan will make Chinese steel look good.

Personally, I shave with a Feather Artist Club my wife bought me from Classic several years ago- no stropping or honing, and the blades come sharper then I (or anyone else I know) could hone. I also use several vintage blades.

I'm sorry if I come off abrasive with this- I hate companies and people who take advantage of new straight shavers with junk. I know many people all over the world who will and have gone out of their way to help a guy new to straights some have given complete setups to newbs, and/or hone for little to nothing for newbs.

vote-for0vote-against

@ksarith12: We will be happy to sharpen it for you if it is dull. Can you please try the following first and if it needs sharpened let me know from the contact form on the site:

First if your new to straight shaving / wet shaving here is a good youtube for shaving techniques. I have been getting back a few razors for sharpening that are sharp.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUK56EqF-B0 (3 Parts)

You will want to work on angel and technique have a 30 degree angle or less (3 quarters from the spine to your skin) and light pressure at first. It will take some time to build up confidence. You will also want to make sure the area of the face your shaving you are pulling the skin tight.

Prep is also key I have a stiff beard and if I don’t give my face a good hot towel for a minimum of 5 minutes I don’t have a great shave.

I hope that helps. Let me know what you find out happy to help either way.

Luke

@rroberto: I answer this all the time. I don't reply to psywiped because he is a waste of time. These are from China. I have plenty of German, UK, French, US blades as well.

@straightrazor

Again, good on you for what appears to be great customer service. I'll say that the blade I got off from a previous woot was not shave-ready (I brought it to my barber, so it's possible he might have just wanted me to shy away from straight-razor shaving), but everything about the transaction was extremely professional. I've heard, however, that getting a blade shave-ready for a novice is extremely difficult. Do you have any suggestions?

Cheers,

Ken

vote-for0vote-against

@albaken: Thanks for the heads up. If you shoot me an email from the site we can get you taken care of. We have a very good sharpening department that can get this blade shave ready for you.

If you are asking how to hone you will want to invest in a Norton 4k/8k stone just about all aspects of sharpening can be done with this stone from setting the bevel to final sharpening. If you want more options there you can set the bevel with a 1k stone (we use a 1k Shun's) and for a final finish you can use a 12k stone.

There are some great videos on youtube of how to hone. If you email me I have all the links I can send you as well.
