For $50, I'm bound to find all manner of uses for this thing. I just wish it would also go portrait instead of landscape.

vote-for3vote-against

Ummmm...ahhhh....yeah.......

Appears to do a lot of things...but does it do any of them well?? Or at least better than what I've got??

I know....pictures of catz.....

vote-for6vote-against

So... it's like a Chumby that doesn't do anything?

vote-for8vote-against

Nice. $55 shipped is a great price 8" USB display for a computer, and it's a photo frame and SD video viewer too.

Anyone happen to know Linux compatibility for this as a sub-display?

vote-for1vote-against

So... What's the real difference betrween a dog and a cat?

Well...

A dog looks in the mirror, looks at you, looks in the mirror, and thinks, "Gee, I'm a funny looking human."

A cat looks in the mirror, looks at you, looks in the mirror, and thinks, "Gee, you're a funny looking cat."

There's a(n?) user manual (warning: 24MB PDF) at http://www.usa.philips.com/c/digital-photo/boomboom-glossy-black-spf4080p_g7/prd/en/?t=support

It specifies clearly (on page twenty-something) that it's Windows-only. I can't find any drivers for it online and there doesn't seem to be any mention or chatter to determine whether or not it is displaylink-compatible. If it were, Linux support would be (probably?) a 'yes'.

Anyone know more than that? I'd love a sub-display at this price if it works with Linux

vote-for1vote-against

I notice this has exactly the native resolution of Diablo 2. With the $10 I save thanks to Jumbowoot I might just give this a shot.

vote-for2vote-against

I have several USB sub-monitors in use (all acquired from Woot) and find them pretty useful. They were about $100 each. This unit is a steal at half the price and has more functionality. I'm maxing out at 3!

vote-for1vote-against

@pizza: how does one get $10 from jumbowoot? Or is that just your own personal discount? Any coupon help would be appreciated as I am looking to gift this for Christmas. Thx

vote-for6vote-against

@jamesbottomtooth: not to be confused with "Boom Boom Phillips" as I regretably found out doing a search on google.

vote-for1vote-against

the write up mentions a clock mode. anyone know if could be used as an alarm clock? That would make it useful to me, although the other stuff is nice also.

vote-for2vote-against

@baqui63: According to a cat-loving friend, the real difference between a dog and a cat: If the sizes of the human and the pet were reversed, a dog would play with you and a cat would EAT you!

vote-for6vote-against

guess I get to answer my own question, just did a speed read of the manual, and there is an alarm feature. In a pro-active way here is some more answers to questions I'm willing to bet people will want to ask.
The BoomBoom connects to a computer using a USB / mini-USB cable (included)
You can connect to a computer to use a media storage device (the computer sees it as a flash drive)
Or you can connect as a monitor (either as it's own display or as a mirror of your main display).
the monitor function does require the installation of software on the windows machine you hook it up to.
I'm going to assume it is POSSIBLE to do this with linux... if you can find drivers for a USB monitor. Ranging from not likely to difficult. I'll leave that test to someone who knows more about linux than I do.

@sfstone:

The $10 coupon was for people who were active users on deals.woot on September 28, 2011 (apparently the first time deals.woot exceeded 200 active users). I also got one also and used it tonight on wine.woot to get two six-packs of wine.

BTW- active users means added content, as in posted a deal or question or comment or answer (at least this is how @snapster has defined it in the past).

Also, buying three shirts on random shirt day will get you coupons soemtimes.

vote-for2vote-against

@ginawoot:

I would agree with that.

vote-for1vote-against

@sfstone:

You mean this Boom Boom Phillips? (You don't need a FB account to see her FB page, because you know, sharing is the new privacy.)

vote-for2vote-against

@baqui63: thx for the reply. I have been on here for quite a while and just started posting tonight cuz this thing really caught my interest and I couldn't find any reviews on it. Figures! Once again I am a day late and a dollar short! Still hoping to get a $99 HP Touchpad to boot. Just shoot me now and get it over with!

vote-for2vote-against

Got one for a Christmas present, but if it was a touch screen I would have grabbed 3 for home automation project. Oh well I can wish can't I?

vote-for1vote-against

For $55 I'm willing to risk buying it without any reviews. I need a new frame at work since my old frame (from BoC) died a few months ago.

vote-for2vote-against

on the fence for 1 or 3...I think 3 it will be $50 for a USB monitor is great, can never have enough real estate on your desktop

vote-for1vote-against

@baqui63: dude looks like a lady...

vote-for0vote-against

think too much, only $55 for so many things. Just do it.

vote-for1vote-against

Will this thing charge an ipod?

vote-for2vote-against

While looking for a YouTube video for this thing, I cam across the Philips AirFryer. Wow. Is that a real thing?

vote-for1vote-against

Anybody have an idea what it will do with an Android phone?

vote-for1vote-against

Another remote for me to misplace?

vote-for1vote-against

Oh well I'm in for one, thank god for TAXSUCKS otherwise I would have run the other direction.

vote-for2vote-against

I have several 8" digital picture frames and the Philips one is the best. It has the most features and the widest viewing angles. A decent 8" digital picture frame costs more than $50 (I paid $89 for my Philips), and a 8" USB secondary display also costs a lot more than $50 (and some are lower resolution, 800x480). Looks like a really good deal. Even with no reviews on amazon, I'm willing to give it a shot!

@sunnydeeee:

"Ooo, that's fantasic! That's really crispy!"

"They are really crispy!"

(What is Derek's accent? Welsh?)

vote-for1vote-against

Interesting broken English in the User Manual. The first bullet under 'Key Features' is:

* Easy plug and play displaying your favorite videos on the handheld camcorder, compatible with most handheld camcorders.

vote-for1vote-against

picked one up, now if only I could find my MIMO cable, I could use both.

I know someone got a mimo to work on android, I would love to see one of these sub displays act as an auxillary screen to google tv, show volume, time, position, like the screens on DVD players.

vote-for1vote-against

I purchased on late last night based just on what it was and how little we are paying for it and it's new! I just asked woot to increase my order to 3!

Hope they get my request! xD

vote-for1vote-against

My PC has a built in TV tuner so can I use this as a TV screen?

vote-for2vote-against

QVC has a pretty thorough product video from last year. The important thing is that video on the device looks OK, viewing angles appear appropriate, but the display is a bit washed out with somewhat low contrast. Better than I expected overall.

Hmmm, the link is getting broken up. Well, go to QVC.com and search for product "E166547"

vote-for1vote-against

For the price, I'm in for one. Worst case, my daughter will use it to display pictures of her friends and listen to her iPod. However, I'm hoping to get it to work with my Mac using a DisplayLink driver - or maybe I'll just keep t to display photos of my various woot purchases.

vote-for2vote-against

I caved and bought one as well, I figure it'll make a decent Christmas present for my Mom. Load it up with a ton of pictures of my family and my sister's family, maybe some pictures from when we were kids and I'll still be in green zone when I forget Mother's Day later on...

vote-for1vote-against

I was in for three. This appears to be a really nice photo frame for $50.00

vote-for1vote-against

How easy is it, to use this with a Mac Notebook? Thank-you, in advance for the answer.

vote-for1vote-against

Oops! forgot to ask if it would work with my Zune......Would it?
thanks, again, for any info.

vote-for1vote-against

@britpj: Sure it does. It's just an aux connector which means you just plug it into any headphone outlet.

vote-for1vote-against

@britpj: Can't answer about Macs. It's a Windows product that some seem to think can be got to work with Linux. No indication that it could work as a secondary monitor with Macs.

vote-for1vote-against

@britpj: We're unsure (unless I missed a comment) if it will work at all with anything other than a PC in terms of being a USB display. There is hope that it is DisplayLink compatible... but we don't know, meaning it might not work at all.

As far as a Zune is concerned: I think it just uses a standard auxiliary input jack, which basically means anything you'd plug headphones into would work with it.

vote-for1vote-against

"I knew that. I did." I was just testing you. :) I am embarrassed. Thanks, for not only replying, but not ceasing on the chance to be very sarcastic. I love my fellow-wooters!

vote-for1vote-against

I have been wanting a digital frame for awhile....always waiting for the best deal. It sounds like this is it.

vote-for1vote-against

from what little I know: I want to say to everyone, that it will not work with MAC... there is no displaylink port listed in the manual, only the USB, which requires drivers, which are only made for windows.
If I understand correctly, you can use the USB port to plug in flash drives and such to play media (audio / video) OR
using the above drivers you can have your PC (windows) send a video signal over the USB to the BoomBoom. I'm betting the drivers just convert the video to a "movie stream" so the BoomBoom just sees another video file to play. a fancy live-stream type video file, but a video file non-the-less.
Either that or they might have something fancy going on with the BoomBoom being a USB-host for flash media, and a USB-device when hooked to the computer as a seconday display. (this is what some android tablets do when connected to a computer versus a flash drive)

vote-for3vote-against

Still no results as far as drivers... they do come on a CD in the box, but that appears to be the only way of getting them, at least 'officially' (could that imply a licensing/distribution issue?) Getting and installing or extracting the drivers, if they were to be acquired, could lead to more info regarding the display protocol, maybe the USB Identifier(s) could clue us in?

Also, the display itself appears to be manufactured by GiiNii (thanks to the copyright in the manual, also, Google Philips+GiiNii) anyone ever see something like this from that brand? I wouldn't be surprised if it's a Philips-branded version of something else with more driver support elsewhere.

@theant: I think you're getting the DisplayLink protocol and the DisplayPort physical interface confused. Similar names and end uses, but entirely different things where Linux/Mac support is concerned. :)
DisplayLink: http://www.displaylink.com/
DisplayPort: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

Yay, teamwork!
