vote-for1vote-against

What's the speed of the harddrive? Is it 5400 or 7200rpm?

vote-for2vote-against

@wootiewooterson Doesn't have everything. Has no firewire, has no eSata ports, only USB.

vote-for4vote-against

@wizardtom: relax, we know it doesn't have 'everything'....

seriously, if this laptop had everything it would rise up and enslave humanity then it would be SkyNet all over again... :)

vote-for1vote-against

Wow, about to buy and then realized it was a gateway...Any info on reliability here?

vote-for2vote-against

@timberhawk: I had a Gateway for 10 years. It was obsolete long before it wore out.

vote-for2vote-against

Everything's great except the keyboard layout. Ugh. Look at the numberpad. http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668447.php?glry=4&tab=gallery Yes, the "." is above the "7".

ComputerShopper.com Editors' Choice
February 26, 2010:

"A notebook for folks concerned about both price and features, this Gateway packs in the goodies without breaking the bank. Overall, the NV79 hits a price/performance sweet spot that would make an excellent college computer or a terrific utilitarian household PC." 8.9/10

Gateway seems to get a lot of negative comments from Wooters, but I have been a fan of Gateway for years. I have 7 Gateways of various vintages from brand new to 12 years old. All of them still work fine, though I rarely power up the old one anymore. (It runs Windows ME - remember that clunker OS?) The only real hardware problem I ever had was an LCD monitor that died after 4 years of continuous use. I am tempted to buy this Deal if I can justify another laptop, but have already recommended it to a couple of friends in need.

vote-for1vote-against

I have to say that I'm disappointed by the screen. I have a 16" HP with a 1080p display and anything else seems insufficient.

vote-for1vote-against

I'm very impressed with the specs for that price.
just please don't try to go gaming on it. I've heard nothing but horror stories with intel GMA chipsets as far as gaming goes. world of warcraft, yes; crysis and call of duty, no.
otherwise, GREAT deal, I'd say. I'd be in for one if I wasn't such an avid gamer. In fact, even with that fact, I'm still seriously considering... the core i5 is beast.

Nice rig, great price, but GearXS? On reseller ratings, with 120 reviews, GearXS.com gets all of 3.13/10. Ouch!
http://www.resellerratings.com/store/GearXS

vote-for2vote-against

For the asking price it's quite a bargain but the seller is suspect. My advice is to let this one pass.

vote-for1vote-against

Thanks stryderxx. I was going to jump on it til u showed the reseller rating link. I am with u on this one....... looks dangerous.

vote-for2vote-against

Pass. This seller seems to be no good.

vote-for2vote-against

I appreciate the info on the vendor. This deal looks good--but too much risk
especially as I was going to order one for my college student daughter.
She doesn't need to potential hassle. Does WOOT check into who is buying
sponsored links?

vote-for1vote-against

@snowmanvt: I would definitely just get a computer for a college student from a reputable seller. I ordered mine directly from the HP website back in the days. But yea, lots of good deals at places like best buy, I would just go there.

vote-for3vote-against

be careful of this company. the laptop deal is amazing, and its a great laptop, but the company is not trustworthy

it has a BBB rating of F

Just bought one of these about a week ago from amazon, paid $679 for it, got to say this is one of the best laptops I've ever owned, way faster than my core 2 duo desktop, loaded with 4 gigs of ram and 500GB hard drive, the screen is beautiful and the perfect resolution for this size, so your eyes won't restrain from looking at it for long periods of time.
I'm using a dual display setup for work, the intel drivers for the graphics card are good, even will let you set the position of your second monitor (left or right), and it plays 720p and 1080p video perfect without stutter, the hdmi will allow you to display to an hdtv at fullHD resolution.
I has a full size keyboard and right above some touch controls for volume, and other functions, multi-gesture touchpad provide somewhat-iphone functionality, but the touchpad buttons are a little small for my taste, also it has a vga webcam.
the case is very silent and cool to the touch, For the price it's one of the best deals right now: 9/10

This complaint from http://www.resellerratings.com/store/GearXS is only a week old. Many complaints are within a year.

I ordered a "NEW" high end Logitech laser mouse ($77.00) and received the mouse without the software CD and not in the manufacturer box. They are reselling seconds or something. BUYER BEWARE. I purchased with AMEX so retailer beware. American Express doesn't let their cardholders get screwed by unethical merchants.

vote-for2vote-against

Sorry GearXS. No way am I going to take a chance on this one. The reviews on Reseller ratings are absolutely horrible, and many are very recent. Either they are being smeared, or this is a very sketch outfit. They have tons of complaints on a keyboard, for heaven's sake. This is a laptop, one of the most troublesome products in tech. I want a new lappie, and I want a Core i5, but I'm not throwing 600 bucks down a hole.
And I agree with the concern about the sponsored ads. Woot, if things go bad you are going to get splashed with some of the mud here.

vote-for1vote-against

@wilfbrim: Woot shall create a "Consumer Protection Program" or something that helps buyers to file claims or get money back.

I really really want to buy this computer. However, I don't want to face the possibility that I could flush $550 down the drain. If the new management of GearXS really wants to clear its bad name / bad past, it shall do something.

If I really really really want it, I can still buy this from many other known good sellers for maybe $130 more. I don't want to take this risk.

Can you explain when did the new management take over the business and why there are still fresh complaints on some websites? Your eBay ratings are great. But buying from eBay also protected you from certain frauds. Buying from your own website, we are on our own.

I think many wooters here are quite interested.

Bought one. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

vote-for2vote-against

Jeez, that's one of the lowest reseller rating I've seen... Price is great though, so I'll need to think about it

vote-for2vote-against

What are we really talking about here, Customer service. Right? Look at their eBay feedback again and look within the last month. Items of lower value and they can't even reply to customers emails? Come on sure most of us are technical so when things go right no problem, but it doesn’t look like they take customer service very serious. I'm not risking $$$ for a brick. Also in the case of the credit card and PayPal comment that is a lie. Those are for cases of fraud. Not willful purchases.

vote-for2vote-against

I read through most of the comments on resellerrating.com, and there's no way I'm doing business with these guys.

vote-for2vote-against

Can anyone explain the price on that RAM?

vote-for1vote-against

@osprey54: we changed it, thanks for let in us know.

vote-for2vote-against

Sold out, but apparently available for backorder. If someone calls and backorders it, will they get the same deal?
