dealscancun vacation: flight + 3 nights at the luxury…

The downvotes really aren't against the deal, just against the possibility of becomes an innocent bystander in the drug turf war that is going on down there.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, etc. etc. are actually pretty safe. I just got back from Playa del Carmen a couple of weeks ago and had a great time.

Cancun is relatively safe - as are most of the resort cities. We have been to Cancun (2x) and Puerto Villarta in the past 3 years - and found them as safe, or safer than most metro US areas.

Important rules to follow for Mexico:
1) Don't do anything stupid. If you have a habit to get stupidly drunk, do it in your hotel room. (The Riu has a wet bar in your room with 4 bottles of liquor and beer in the fridge - all included.)
2) Keep your head on a swivel. Most crimes happen because you are not aware of your surroundings.
3) Travel in groups and hold hands in crowds.
4) When exiting customs in the airport, ignore all the guys right before the exit. (The timeshare guys who say they aren't timeshare reps)
5) Don't be afraid to haggle.
6) Enjoy!

The Riu Palace is excellent - the staff is great, and they really make it so you don't have to leave the grounds. The Palace shares grounds with 2 other Riu hotels. As a guest of the palace you can go onto any of the other hotels beaches/restaurants/bars, the other hotels can only stay at their own. There are also kayak/boogie board/snorkel gear stands on the beach, and their use is free as well. If you forget something - Walmart is a 7-12 peso ride away by bus. (.75 - $1) prices aren't the greatest, but cheaper than the hotel gift shop.
Also the Riu is a moderate walk from most of the major bars/nightspots in Cancun.
