It is a great printer, but can be found on sale + coupon for $49-59 at the big office stores every month or two. $99 is the current price with Amazon Prime, with a better return policy, so this isn't really a good deal.

Agreed with the above. I have one, I love it, I got it for $60 or so from Amazon with free shipping like a year ago.

I've had two similar HL-series printers from Brother and both have been excellent. They're simple, reliable, inexpensive, and the included toner lasts a long time.

The first printer refused to start jobs after a while due to a low toner warning but simply covering the toner assembly peep holes with masking tape gave me another year of printing.

@travisjordan: @korpo53: Are you sure you guys aren't thinking of the HL-2240?

I frequently see the 2240 around the $50-$60 mark, but the 2270 generally doesn't drop below ~$85-$90. FWIW, the 2270 has duplex printing and wireless capability. Two huge advantages.

I've used the 2270 for over 3 years without one hiccup. Toner is cheap online and lasts forever. And duplex printing saves me a ton of paper.

I have this exact printer and I love the crap out of it. This isn't the best price I've seen (you may find it for about $10 cheaper), but if you need a printer, it's really not worth holding out. I moved countries recently and gave mine to a friend who was instantly smitten, then promptly bought another at my destination. Both see a good amount of use (my other half and I are both students), were easy to set up wirelessly, print duplex flawlessly, and never jam. Even though the toner can be pricey, we replace it once in a blue moon, and there's no way I'd go back to an inkjet after this. I do have a separate printer for printing photos and scanning, but this is my everyday go-to and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Oh and the ones you see in the $50 or so range are not the same. There are similar looking printers that are inkjet (not laser), are not wireless, do not do duplex printing, and/or are refurbished. It's not worth settling for less.

Yup, just looked up my Amazon receipt. It's a 2270DW that I got in April of 2011 (I guess I was off a year) for $74. Not $60, but still... a lot cheaper than this.

I got the 2270DW a little over a year ago for $85 at Staples. As a graduate student, I am always printing research articles to review and this has just been an awesome printer. Like people have said, you can find a better price, but the printer is definitely worth it when you finally do decide to buy.

My second inexpensive laser from Brother, both great printers. I love the wireless feature and it's easy to setup the wps link with my NETGEAR WNDR3400. Just press the big blue button on the router and the little tiny (pain in the butt) button on the printer. The only problem I've had is changing the toner. I added a new high capacity cartridge and toner light did not reset. I had to take the cartridge housing. Out and remove a little gear and then put it back in 180 degrees different. I know they don't all do this, just lucky I guess. Didn't try the tape trick.

@owlie

You beat me to the glowing review. We have one of these in our five person office, used by all via wireless, etc....Extremely reliable, fast, and great print quality. We had the prior model, the 2170W, and got well over 20,000 pages out of it. Best $100 anyone will ever spend, trust me. Only issue has been a glitch where the Toner light would come on erroneously, but I believe a firmware update fixed that up. Either way, it rocks.

This is a really good printer. Reliable, works great. Try the toner save mode if you're printing text only documents. They still look good, but you get way more out of the cartridge.

bought this printer a few months ago and can't be happier with it. duplex works great, and it prints fast. even better, after the starter toner ran out, i was able to spend about $20 to refill the toner and replace the gear on the starter cartridge myself instead of spending the $60 for replacement toner. in the future, without having to replace the gear now, it'll only cost $10 to refill the toner. easy to do, and you can find simple instructions (usually from the companies selling the replacement stuff) on youtube, etc.
