IR means it's line-of-sight only. If you can't see the outlet, you can't control it.

So basically I can plug my tv into this and then program the power button to turn on the tv! errr.. wait. What is this good for again? ;)

@markelshark: haha! good point. although this does have some niche uses. the wife and i have upward facing accent lights behind the sofa. we either have to get on all fours, or lean over the back of the sofa to plug them in (we got ones without switches for some stupid reason) so this would be a great solution for us to power those lights on and off easily. but you're right, for most situations this is kinda pointless
