Microsoft Office 2010 Beta for $0
Free download of Microsoft Office 2010 (Beta)
This is a full version that is free during the Beta test. Once the test is over you will need to purchase a product key to continue using the software.
With Microsoft Office Web Apps (Technical Preview) on Windows Live, you can view, edit, store, and share Office documents with others online1 for free. Office documents stored on Windows Live can be viewed and edited with either the Office Web Apps or with the Office client applications on your desktop.

Adding my vote because, though I had already downloaded the Word 2010 Beta, I did not know that the web features of the product went that far! Neat. Thanks again for this.
Actually the WebApps are supposed to be free when they go live as well....to compete with Google Docs.
a free version of excell? finally I will retired my lotus 123!!
Pff, Lotus will never die.
Don't junk Lotus just yet. The web apps might not work well for you if spend significant time in non web enabled areas. (Do those even exist anymore?) And the desktop app will need to be registered eventually.
I'd suggest open office if you haven't heard of it. It's free, and I've been using it for years on a couple of my computers, because I didn't want to buy multiple Office licenses.
Lotus = Poop
I've been running the beta for awhile. Word & Excel are fine. outlook seems to have major scrolling issues, where you have to scroll backup then down for the display to look correct.
i've been using the 2010 professional beta, it's nice. i use it for everything.
Even FREE, a retail copy might not even be worth it.
@phillystyle: It's shocking to me that people will pay $300+ for this piece of crap software when there is a FREE alternative that reads/writes in the exact same formats as Microsoft Office.
People, give openoffice.org a try. It doesn't bite and hell, if you don't like it, much like this beta, you aren't out any money.
Same format...close but not quite the same....but the bigger issue is no one has a good free alternative to PowerPoint and no one has an alternative for Access whatsoever. Also many of Excel's features are not duplicated in the free office apps out there and the integration between applications is tremendous.
Does everyone need MS Office? No, and you won't get an argument from me there. at the same time not everyone needs Photoshop either....but I've found most of the people I know who complain about the expense of Office steal both of those applications and just tell people to use OpenOffice. I'm not saying that's you, but that's my two cents on the matter.
Personally I use Office and I don't pay nearly the amount of money you are talking about. For Microsoft applications you have options out there like TechNet if it's just you or the Microsoft Action Pack if it is more than you....they both run around the $300 per year price point...for which you get multiple copies of many apps.
@darthcat: um, you realize they're just copying Google Docs in that regard?
Alternative to access...you can get an oracle database for free for personal use.
how does it fare with compatibility with other systems?
i.e., if you were to send a document over the internet to someone that has an older version of MS Office, would they be able to read aforementioned document?
does it save the word documents as .doc or .docx or something else?
unfortunately I upgraded from xp to 7 and lost everything, something like this would be really valuable for me in the mean time, but it would be garbage if what I work on can't be seen in any other computer or even most computers with older versions of MS Office.
Office 2007 saves documents in docx, but you can change it to save to doc instead, which is what I do. I would assume 2010 is the same.
