My buddy just got Roku XS w/ a motion controller for games... you play Angry Birds by using a Wii-like remote. Can't wait to try it.

Thanks for the heads up, I am contemplating getting one for my mother for Christmas. Well for her birthday on the 23rd and then for Christmas she'll get 6 months of Neftlix.

Love these things; have 4 in my house with Netflix and Hulu accounts. Cancelled cable and have not regretted it.

This is a good deal.

I love Roku's. I purchased a Roku XD for my parents a few months ago (right before the new models came out). Other than some WiFi issues, these machines are awesome.

I just picked one up so I can stop streaming off my PS3. These things use a lot less power than a PS3 fully running!

vote-for2vote-against

What is the 2 for $90 deal and is it still running?

vote-for2vote-against

You don't have to wait till the weekend, the discount will show up in the cart now.

vote-for2vote-against

@klaw126: It says it is good through the weekend. Not that it doesn't start until the weekend.

vote-for4vote-against

I'm going to hold out and wait for the XS to go on sale. (I want the ethernet and USB jacks.) One of my friends has a Roku and showed it off to me last weekend.

I wish there were deals for the wdtv's. much rather have another one of those than a box that is pretty strictly streaming-only.

vote-for2vote-against

@deeluxx: I actually replaced my WDTV with a roku. I got PlayOn server (you can also use Plex) and stream all of your media directly to the Roku. I miss being able to play from my external drive sometimes because I can't fast forward but either way was a sacrifice. I'd much rather stream all of my media from my server and not be able to fast forward than have to transfer the files to an external to watch using WDTV.

Read an article yesterday that said Internet Serrvice Providers, like Comcast and AT&T, are looking at charging data usage fees to take profit advantage of all the live streaming devices like Roku. The article said 50GB maximum use a month and $10 for every 10GB above that. Just passing on the holiday cheer.

thanks! getting one for my sister for christmas. Was planning on this model to, so perfect.

Really debating picking one up for myself too.. but, I'm still debating between this and an apple tv... Although it lacks hulu+ (hopefully not for much longer...) i can access media on my network... Slowly getting away from downloading, but its still nice to have the option to fill gaps between netflix and hulu without having to pay for it.

vote-for2vote-against

Are these worth getting for somebody who already has a Samsung 'smart' TV or would it be mostly redundant?

vote-for4vote-against

@fantomfreq: Depends on what use they will be putting it to. If they would also like to stream media from a computer on their network it is definitely worthwhile. If they are just going to use netflix/hulu or other online streaming sources, it is probably not worth it.

Good deal. Was going to buy a Roku LT this weekend as a gift. Now they just got the next model up for a couple bucks cheaper.
Thanks for posting op.

p.s - Anybody know if these remotes have the dedicated Netflix button?

vote-for2vote-against

@wilcononomous: Nope, only the cheaper model does (doesn't make sense to me).

vote-for2vote-against

@rmsalt - I have Comcast and they limit streaming to 250gb per month. Talked to the guy the other day because my brother went wayyyy over and they shut us off until I called in. They told me that at highest HD quality it comes to about 200 movies a month. My brother is an online gamer and him and his roommate stream movies almost 24/7. This is the first time in 5 years that we have gone over the limit. The average use that they have (again major streamers) is 100gb a month.

@eeekdageek: Thanks for the reminder! My Woot Roku refurb came into today and I registered.

May I say how completely freakin' awesome the Roku is? I am so kicking myself in the rear for not getting one sooner. Amazing.

vote-for2vote-against

I'm so stoked today because my refurbished Roku I bought on Woot came in today...only to see that the Roku 2 is available even cheaper this weekend? That's my luck. Is the only difference between the Roku XD and the Roku 2 HD just the SD card slot? If that's all, I guess I don't feel too bad.

I just got the sony smp n100 for $50 at best buy and it has and does all the same things as this, except the sony has a usb port for playing files from my external hard drive...though many file types are not supported. Is the ROKU any different aside from it lacking the usb port? for $50 might have to try this on my other tv....anyone compare these two?

vote-for1vote-against

I have an older Roku and I love it, BUT...
Roku is eliminating Netflix support on the older models.
http://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=41510
It's not really Roku's fault since it's Netflix that are changing, but still, without Netflix the thing is pretty worthless.
Also, the newer models have eliminated the toslink digital audio output, digital sound is now done through the hdmi output. Since my stereo only has toslink, the newer model is pretty much worthless also.
My older model will probably go to the bedroom, and I'll replace my living room media streamer with a Western Digital.

vote-for1vote-against

@mrxindeed: ah yes, suddenly I don't feel so bad for buying my Roku LT.

vote-for1vote-against

How strong is the Roku Wifi antenna?

vote-for2vote-against

@jabcyberia: The Roku XD plays 1080p. The Roku 2 HD plays 720p. So, if you're looking for 1080p, you should be happy with your purchase.

vote-for1vote-against

I have had roku for over a year and I still use it everyday. Along with netflix and Amazon prime my Cable vs Roku usage is now 90% vs 10%.... The remaining 10% is sports that are still in early stages for streaming boxes.

@reddscott22: "I just got the sony smp n100 for $50 at best buy and it has and does all the same things as this"..."Is the ROKU any different aside from it lacking the usb port?"

You're confident the Sony has the same capabilities then 2 seconds later you're not? Why make the first comment at all? Another internet guru. ROTFLMAO

The Roku has tons more streaming capabilities over the Sony. Also, The high end Rokus have a USB port though it may not read as many file types as the Sony which doesn't read as many as the WDTV, etc..

vote-for1vote-against

I was planning on getting two roku LTs but is this deal really good? can you play movies off of the sd card? why is an expandable card slot good for these things? i don't really use any blue tooth devices at the moment. thanks for info.

vote-for1vote-against

Got a 720p TV this'll be perfect for; we're in for one. We've been streaming on a laptop into the TV; this should be significantly simpler.

Yeehaw!

vote-for2vote-against

@rsnyc: If you are planning on playing movies off of this (not from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc), then you don't want this device. It doesn't play a lot of video formats. I would recommend a WD TV Live Plus instead.

vote-for1vote-against

@hackman2007: thanks for info...i agree. I bought one for someone as a gift just because it was $2 cheaper than the LT anyway. I do not really see the advantage of the sd card on these.

I also use a ps3 which allows me to stream and play off a usb almost any different film format. I might eventually still get a roku for the sports channels. NBA, MLB and NHL are all on it as subscriptions.

Thanks for the deal!
