FREE: The War of the Worlds: H. G. (Herbert George) Wells: : Kindle Store
This is the granddaddy of all alien invasion stories, first published by H.G. Wells in 1898. The novel begins ominously, as the lone voice of a narrator tells readers that "No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's..."
Went to buy this... got it in November 2010. :)
@gonffen: Lol, this is the first time I came across this book. I wondered if this was free for awhile or if my searching skills must needs some work.
It's always free at Project Gutenberg. Lots of free books there.
@barnabee: Yup, I go there too. I don't like all the extra pages in the front of the books, (although I understand it's necessary) so I try other places first.
@barnabee: Formatting at P:G is wildly inconsistent, so picking up these free copies is well worth it. (FWIW I actually originally read this on Google Books, where it was also free)
To my knowledge, this and many other classics have always been free on the Kindle store.
iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch owners can also scoop up numerous classics for free!
My apologies @meems212: I meant nothing against your deal. Free is always nice! I was just pointing out that there are many books, such as this, available for no charge at Project Gutenberg.
@snoopjedi: I have never had a formatting problem with P/G.
@barnabee: S' cool.... like you said free is always nice.... no matter where we can get it from. ;)
The book is public domain, so a digital copy should be free, unless something is added to it (like annotations, pictures, essays etc. that are new). Still I agree. Free is good. Free classics are even better.
@barnabee: For the most part, neither have I. Certain titles are just a little weird. "Flatland" has ASCII figures that do not render at all on the Kindle, for example.
Free books are free, though, and P:G is definitely my overwhelming source for them.
@gonffen: You've got me beat by a month :)
Thanks for the deal, I love free literature.
Some of the free versions of books are a little inconsistent. (Not saying it's amazon. I believe a lot of them are copied by volunteers.) I downloaded a free version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and none of the poems were in it. Being the first time I read this story it seemed very confusing and jumped form scene to scene. Found a scanned copy later and it's much better. That being said it's not a bad way to try some of the classics if you haven't read them.
