Samsung 14” Core i5 Aluminum Laptop with WiMax, WiDi, HD LED Display and Edge-to-Edge Glass for $499.99 + $5.00 shipping
‘Allo? ‘Allo up there? May moi come up, s’il vous plaît?
crickets
very very interested in getting this, anyone have any opinions or reivewS?
Any chance of an additional picture that shows off the edge to edge glass?
ARGH! I just bought my laptop today. Anything running i5 for under 600 bucks is pretty impressive
No USB 3.0 or eSata ports.
This is a version of the QX410. I actually bought the QX411 about a month ago, it is a very solid laptop. Also I don't know if it applies to this model but, though the QX411 did not advertise coming with USB 3.0, it has 2x USB 3.0 ports on it along with the controller, confirmed by Samsung.
@tsog: It's a $500 laptop, if that's the only bad you could come up with you're obviously nitpicking.
How long do you think this would take to ship?
Review of the QX410 on engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/samsung-qx410-review/.
Seems like a good deal for a notebook with WiDi.
i thought i stole this laptop when i bought it for 709 at best buy back in march. this is the third time i've seen it at this price since. it is a great deal. my only complaints are that the mousepad is a little finicky but once you get used to it then its not big deal. the other is that like macbooks this one has an internal battery and you would have to "send it in" to get a new one
I purchased a very, VERY similar model (J01 instead of S02) on May 21st from Woot!. The only difference between that and this appears to be the processor, and only 600 MHz difference at that.
I highly recommend this laptop.
Though the dedicated GPU is weak, it's still a pretty nice card for playing some games on lowered settings, and Optimus switches that off (customizable, of course) so you can surf/browse/do whatever else for even 8+ hours (so my battery meter has clocked in before, despite the claim being only 7).
The processor is not a Sandy Bridge, but it is still a very nice processor. It takes a lot to slow this machine down.
Speakers are mediocre at best. Nuff said.
The screen's "edge to edge" capability means between the glass covering on the screen does not just cover the pixels, but the entirety of the inside of the lid (highlited examples:
).
This line of laptops is supreme, especially at about $3-400 off new.
@piroko05: looks like the USB ports are only 2.0, if the BestBuy description is correct (see Specifications tab). BTW, BestBuy is selling this Laptop (refurbished, too) for $649.99, so $499.99 is a good price. Here's the link:
I'm really tempted... it may be time to get yet another laptop...
@tsog: Nope, no USB 3.0 or eSata. But it has 3 x USB 2.0, HDMI, and a card reader.
@sarasnee: It took about two weeks for mine to ship, but that was from Woot! main, not Sellout.Woot!, so who can say for sure?
Then again, I'm in TN and it shipped from CA.
The biggest downside I have to say is the battery is internal, not user-changeable. It cannot be removed like most laptop batteries with a simple slide of a lever and pull out.
If you need a new battery, you'll have to send it in to Samsung.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2383858,00.asp... Review from PCmag. Previous wooters have covered the rest. All that being said, for the price, nice laptop. Kind of a Macbook Pro style rip-off. For the price, not much to complain about. This was typed on one... Nice machine.
@mscalbear : As I said, the specs are wrong on Best Buy's website for the QX411, I am not sure about the QX410, perhaps they updated it along with the ram, gpu, and processor. When I look at the device list it said there is a USB 3.0 controller card, so I called and asked Samsung about it, they confirmed that the specs on Best Buy's website are wrong.
Yes, I am typing on this exact model machine right now. It is my best laptop yet and I have been through a few. It's sleek, sexy, has a great keyboard, decent webcam, very fast processor, Windows 7 runs great, the graphics card is great and even the built in speakers are pretty good. Overall I am very glad I bought this laptop. The battery like for me is around 3 hours... not sure why others are getting 7 hours :/ maybe I just got a dud battery :(
Snagged one. Hoping you're right on the surprise USB 3.0, haha. Soo worth it.
Gitty-up! Got one. Thanks for the reviews and opinions
@thefowles1: fjdaslkdjf SHOOT. Not 600 Mhz. Only 160 MHz. Brain fart.
@goreartist: Check your power saver settings. Could be a dud, but not very likely. Though most factory-preset settings are iffy at best, the "Samsung Optimized" setting will give you better battery life when on battery and better performance when plugged in. That's what I have selected most of the time.
(For even better battery life, pick more power-saving options!)
@sarasnee: This is the QX410, which was released around October of 2010. I don't know how prominent USB 3.0 was back then, but I am almost 100% certain it won't have USB 3.0, considering the QX410 line was not produced with it.
Also, as a note to potential buyers, mine came with a partitioned hard drive. No biggie, as that can be easily undone, but don't be surprised if yours does too.
@thefowles1: What is a partitioned hard drive?
@sarasnee 2 to 5 days processing time, then depending on where you live. 1 to 6 days shipping time. Woot is not known to be speedy on shipping time. At least it's not smartpost. That can take longer. Ground to California usually takes 5 to 6 days.
@wordstoexpress: "Partition" means to divide into parts, and that's essentially what a partitioned drive is. It is virtually divided into parts. In my case, there was a partition labeled "backup" or somesuch that was 300-something gigs, and the main partition was the rest of that space.
As an additional tip, technically all hard drives that have an OS installed on them (be it Windows or Mac or anything else) are partitioned, with the main drive space being probably about 95+% or so of the capacity and the rest set as a hidden partition reserved specifically for OS files. Check out the wiki article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning for more info.
Here's a link to the samsung details:

@bummrounde: Also, this model's shell appears to be the same as the currently sold model at best buy (qx411-w01). Samsung has a nice front shot of the glass display, look at the gallery tab on this site.

The laptop has a great feel and a beatiful look.
Unfortunately, I can not put my confidance in the quality.
A couple of buddies bought similar laptops at Best Buy only to return them the next day because the screens flickered. Apparently it is a common problem on the Samsung laptops (according to the Geek Squad guys).
i really wanna but this... but it seems that the screens border on the bottom side is really large. what do you guys think?
I really can't see how "edge-to-edge" glass is listed as an actual 'feature'. So it's a little easier to clean for about $100 more than a conventional screen? Who really cares? Show me a computer with edge-to-edge pixel display. Then I'll be impressed.
What version of Microsoft Office does this come with? Or does it come with one?
To all you folks who bought this laptop in the past, how do you feel about its dependability?
To me this is the most important feature in a laptop; I don't want to be spending another $500 on a new machine next July.
@wordstoexpress: most new laptops come with a demo of office, but require you to purchase the software to get all its features. I can safely assume this laptop will be similarly equipped.
@thefowles1: "technically all hard drives that have an OS installed on them ... are partitioned. [95% OS, 5% hidden partition]"
That is so completely incorrect that I don't even know where to start.
So I'll just say "no."
Steal of a deal on an i5 laptop though, going to send this around to some people I know who are in the market.
Slight upgrade to the CPU, and $30 less than the Rapture edition I wooted earlier this year. Good value. Also, dump MSOffice and grab OpenOffice.org.
Yes, you want this. YES. YOU WANT THIS. I have it, and its a work horse. Gorgeous to look at, fun to use.
moofi has the i3 with blu-ray for $450 with a 15.6 TFT LCD screen.Your call which is better deal.
Is this new or refurb? What OS does it come with?
@ccn: It comes with Win7, and yes it is a refurb. Still completely worth it, imo. We are seriously considering snagging one.
Thanks maribethg. Does it come with a 90 day warranty? Do you know anything about the price/reputation of 3rd party guarantees? Thanks
Last week my motherboard crashed, and now I have officially ordered a replacement laptop. Wish me luck everyone!
Question: Anyone ever tried to run 32-bit Microsoft Office on 64-bit Windows? Is this a problem? Should I spring for 64-bit Office? It's only $34 at the Campus Computer Store.
@patrickjs5: 32-bit Office will work just fine on 64-bit Windows
Um... could someone link to said i3 laptop with blueray on moofi.com. thx
do u have the link to moofi for this deal? @dliidlii:
nm, i found it
@klocwerk: You completely misread what I typed.
I said 95% useable, 5% OS. And that was only an estimate. Pardon me that I was off in my calculations; in this case, of a 640 GB hard drive, 586 is available, about 91.5%.
Nice job with reading comprehension.
@patrickjs5: After having this for about two months, I can safely say its dependability is extremely high. I have no doubt it will last a very, very long time, years even.
Well I'm in for one. This should feel like a dream compared to my Dell inspiron from 06 that I have now.
@forgiventhief: It was on the right side of the sellout.woot page underneath the join this discussion on dealswoot banner, click the arrow for 2nd page but it is not showing it now.Was the Samsung R580 i3 15.6 LCD,Wi-Max.Wi-Di,Blu-Ray etc. Also available on Ebay from established seller for $449 and free shipping. Just search Samsung R580.
The link to moofi is
http://moofi.woot.com/moofi/nationalsecurity
but it's not a laptop, it's a vacuum.
@forgiventhief: I believe you mean this: http://moofi.woot.com/moofi/justpretendtobecivilized
Unfortunately that sold out not long ago, so it's not longer available.
There is however this: http://moofi.woot.com/moofi/fiddlesforrome
which is a 17" asus with bluray and i5. And this one's new
In for one. Lets hope their refurb process is good.
@ccn: There is a 90 day warranty through Samsung and it is also eligible for an extended warranty through Square Trade.
In for one for my daughter (leaving for college, wanting to replace her old Macbook). Picked up the Square Trade warranty as well.
